Rem Koolhaas believes architecture's beauty is proportional to its horror. He argues for intensifying Manhattan's "fluid, dynamic and productive disorder" by maximizing programs and minimizing architecture. Koolhaas sees skyscrapers as autonomous monuments regardless of merit, with nature resurrected inside merely as a technical service. He advocates neglecting architecture's representation and letting absence win over presence. Koolhaas designed OMA's competition entry for IBA 84 as an image collage, in contrast to Aldo Rossi's drawing-based approach and Peter Eisenman's language-focused method.
Modern architecture began in the early 20th century as architects sought to reconcile design principles with rapid technological advancement through simplification of form and subtraction of ornamentation. Some key architectural styles that emerged during this period included Organic Architecture championed by Frank Lloyd Wright which promoted harmony with nature, Art Deco with its linear symmetry and inspiration from ancient cultures in the 1920s-30s, and the International Style of the 1920s-30s characterized by efficiency over decoration with glass curtain walls and right angles. Mid-Century Modern of the 1930s-60s combined elements of earlier styles like Art Deco with simplicity, and Postmodern Architecture emerging in the late 1970s rejected modernism's simplicity and instead embraced diverse, sometimes coll
Contemporary architecture is the architecture of the 21st century. It aims to break away from standard processes and thinking and is innovative. No single style is dominant, as contemporary architects work in postmodern, high-tech, and expressive styles. It features curved lines, composite volumes, new materials like glass and plants, large windows, and environmental considerations. Famous examples include Walt Disney Concert Hall with billowing stainless steel, Galaxy Soho with connected spherical structures, and Congregation Beth Sholom with an imposing pyramidal roof.
Vladimir Tatlin is considered the founder of Constructivism for his 1919 model of the Monument to the Third International. Constructivism proposed replacing artistic composition with construction, analyzing materials to design functional objects for industry. Key artists included Tatlin, Rodchenko, Popova and Stepanova. Constructivism spread beyond Russia through the 1922 Dusseldorf Congress and the work of El Lissitzky in Germany, influencing Bauhaus and later American sculpture.

Sense and Sensitivity in Architecture – The Use of Five Senses in Space makingPremier Publishers
This study intends to look at the importance of the five senses in experiencing a space. The five senses include vision, touch, olfaction, taste and auditory. Architects need to look into how a space interacts with its end user. Architecture is the journey and not just the destination. It’s a whole package of experiencing a space and it’s not just about the architect. In the process of thinking and perception of architecture there is always more importance given to visual senses than the other senses and the problems of contemporary architecture is rooted in visual dominance and may be the result of unbalanced senses system. All our information about our surrounding world is achieved by our senses and this information help us in perception and recognition. A building should bring into perspective all the five senses, thereby giving a three-dimensional angle to the structure. This study also looks at the role of perception of a space for a person who is sensory impaired such as a person with blindness, deafness, dumbness etc. Therefore, we use Phenomenology of Architecture to experience a space through sensory properties.

types across markets and sectors, we guide the design process

EVALUATION
1. IMMERSION
We immerse our team in your business to gain a deep
understanding of your culture and values, business objectives,
operational goals, brand, and work practices and procedures.
Along with the basic parameters of schedule and budget, our
experts factor in a profound knowledge of external market
drivers and influencers.
2. STRATEGY
Armed with an understanding of who our clients are and
what they seek to achieve, we script a specific road map that
identifies and articulates your strategic goals. Your strategy
becomes our strategy.
3. CONCEPTS
We translate the strategy into alternative concepts and
approaches. Because this step is the most critical in building
a strong bridge between mission and a built environment, we
ensure that we have the right group of business and design
professionals together at the right time.
4. DESIGN
We create a fully developed design solution grounded in strategic
thinking and guided by budget, schedule, and quality targets.
5. IMPLEMENTATION
We implement the design solution in the built environment.
6. EVALUATION
Throughout the process we track and test project progress
against strategic goals, with an emphasis on post-occupancy
evaluation, engagement and reinforcement.

PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN DESIGNSM
Performance-Driven DesignSM
(PDD) is a strategy to improve the value
of the built environment. By drawing on ample evidence about the
social, economic, and environmental impact of design, PDD applies
the greatest available intelligence to create compelling design with
measurable benefits.
PDD begins with the client’s goals as opportunities to deliver
additional value. For example, if a client seeks to lower operating costs
(economic value), good daylight and fresh air can save electrical costs
while reducing energy (environmental value) and creating a healthy
environment for people (social value).
The Performance Wheel is a tool
to visualize how any starting point
can lead to greater benefits across
a spectrum of multiple values. PDD
seeks the point of convergence.

Addison Circle
Addison, Texas
Respecting the town’s moratorium on
garden-style apartments, CallisonRTKL
created a high-density urban district
that supports 3,500 residential units
and up to 4,000,000 SF of office, hotel
and retail space. More importantly,
a pedestrian-friendly street grid, a
series of public parks and a landmark
sculpture define an outdoor focus for
the development.
Next to a traffic-calming rotary, three
mid-rise buildings surround structured
parking and embrace a public park
with trees preserved during design
and construction. A public esplanade
and adjacent retail, residential and
office structures extend toward the
Dallas North Tollway to establish a
highly visible commercial presence.
This award-winning district is a
groundbreaking example of a public-
private partnership that has produced
a sustainable alternative to suburban
sprawl.
In the early 1990s, the town of Addison, Texas partnered with CallisonRTKL
to identify a unique personality for the Dallas suburb. The result was
the transformation of an 80-acre site into a hub of community living for
Addison’s residents.

The Domain
Austin, Texas
The Domain redefines Austin’s urban
lifestyle by offering abundant choices
for living, working and entertainment in
a pedestrian-focused neighborhood. To
ensure around-the-clock activity, RTKL’s
designed the residential portions of
the project to appeal to a variety of age
groups and price points.
Of the six residential buildings, three
are located above first-floor retail
and three comprise townhomes and
single-story units. Varying in size
and style, the building designs not
only celebrate Austin’s traditional
Texas Hill Country architecture, but
also blend contemporary urban
style with sustainable strategies.
Native limestone, brick, metal panels
and plaster clad the exteriors while
varying roof lines contribute to a
village scale and image. Indigenous
oak trees and covered arcades offer
shade to shoppers and residents,
while a community pool and workout
center provide additional recreation
amenities. The project conforms
to Austin Energy’s Green Building
Program standards and is a part of the
S.M.A.R.T HousingTM initiative. The
success of the Domain has prompted
a second phase of development,
Domain Crossing, which includes an
additional 350,000 SF of retail space,
400 apartment units, and multiple
entertainment attractions.
A winner in the 2008 Pillars of the Industry Awards for Best Mixed-Use

development. When complete, Frisco
