6. THE PROJECT:
Lendlease has been successfully delivering projects for
Parliamentary Estates Directorate (PED) since 2008 and
were awarded one of four places on the 3 year Project
Management Services Framework in January 2014.
This Framework has given Lendlease the opportunity to
work on challenging and diverse projects including new
build construction, infrastructure improvements and
sensitive conservation programmes to restore the Palace

of Westminster, all of which have been delivered in a live
UNESCO World Heritage site.
Through the quality of our work, our ability to develop
trusting relationships and our knowledge and appreciation
of what it takes to deliver projects in this unique
environment, Lendlease can claim to be the partner of
choice for PED. To date we have worked on projects
totalling a construction value of over £95,000,000.

7. THE PROJECT:
The Principal Floor riverside fine rooms are the
Palace’s primary events and entertainment spaces. The
Strangers’ Dining Room, Pugin Room, Smoking Room
and Members’ Tea Room are four of the rooms used
for both entertainment and day to day service for the
Members and Peers whilst both Houses are sitting.
For the Strangers’ Dining Room a project brief was
developed to improve the historic accuracy and
decorative condition of the room so the catering
services would be able to compete to a higher market
level and to increase income generation. The project
scope included the restoration of ornate oak panelling,
conservation of the stone fire place, restoration of
the painted ceiling and upgrade of the M&E systems.
This was to be delivered to a tight programme and
restrictive budget.
The Pugin Room, Smoking Room and Members’ Team
room works were comprised of catering improvements
to improve and modernise the existing catering
equipment, reduce running costs, improve statutory
compliance and enhance overall service efficiency and
delivery. The programme of works include restoration
of the rooms’ architectural integrity and aesthetic
appeal. The Smoking Room and Pugin Room have both
been handed over on programme and on budget. The
Members Tea room is programmed to be delivered in
October 2015.

8. THE PROJECT:
The Sovereign Robing Room (SRR) is located at the
southernmost point of the Palace of Westminster and is of
significant relevance to the British monarch and plays a key
role in the annual opening of Parliament ceremony. A survey
of the room’s fabric in 2012 found visible water damage
and cracks to the timber panelling, historically inaccurate
brasswork, gilding issues, glazing damage and stone
damage in need of repair.
A project brief was developed and Lendlease was
commissioned to lead a professional team in restoring the
SRR through the entire project cycle. The project offered the
opportunity to access the higher levels of the room which in
some cases had not been attended to for over 80 years. The
project’s main objective was to halt further deterioration of
the room’s historic fabric and to amend the various elements
that compromised the room’s visual integrity.

9. NEW EDUCATION CENTRE Lendlease was seconded to act as the client Senior
Project Leader within PED, taking the project from
tender through to handover and into operation,
carrying out extensive stakeholder engagement
and negotiation with the BBC, Royal Parks, Security
Authorities, House of Lords etc.
This is a purpose built centre for school visits set within
Victoria Gardens adjacent to the House of Lords,
with a life of approximately 10 years. The building
was envisioned as a ‘state of the art’ schools visitor

experience, which will allow 100,000 school visitors a
year to engage with Parliament. The Centre is BREEAM
excellent and uses interior graphics, augmented
reality and immersive projections to bring the story of
parliament to life.
Our appointment also included a separate role of
Soft Landings Manager, to carry out the consultation
with all operationally affected departments to ensure
the relevant preparation, processes, training and
supporting contracts were in place for ‘day 1’.

10. THE PROJECT:
The Millbank Island Site was originally designed by
W. D. Caroe and built between 1903 and 1906. The
Parliamentary Estates Department (PED) acquired the site
for the House of Lords Peers and their staff. PED’s brief
was to undertake a full refurbishment and re-presentation
of the Island Site, combining Nos. 1 and 2 Millbank, to
form a new single building. The desire was to create
high-quality offices and ancillary facilities for the House
of Lords.
Lendlease was initially commissioned via the OGC Buying
Solutions Framework to project manage all stages of
the client’s fit-out project; however, our brief was soon
extended to provide strategic programme management
advise to PED when it became apparent that the main
contract works were in delay. Lendlease successfully
assisted the client and the main contract and fit-out project
teams to deliver the works on time and below budget.
MILLBANK
HOUSE

11. THE PROJECT:
The State Apartments and Royal Ceremonial Dresses
Collection were transformed into a new ‘integrated visitor
experience’ covering an area of approximately 4,000 sq m
within the famous four storey Kensington Palace (a royal
residence since 1689).
The Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection comprises dresses
worn by members of the Royal Family and by officials and
dignitaries undertaking ceremonial roles, dating from the
18th to the late 20th century.
The project involved the conservation, maintenance and
repair of the building fabric including substantial M&E
replacement works, and the installation of specialised
lighting and sound systems in a series of themed rooms.
As Kensington Palace is an Ancient Monument, statutory
approval was required prior to any works being undertaken
and close liaison with English Heritage as well as with the
Kensington Palace Directorate, curators and the Historic
Royal Palaces’ Surveyor of the Fabric Department was
required throughout the works.
Works were carried out over three winter closures,
December to April, when visitor numbers were at their
lowest and the effects would have least impact.
Careful pre-planning was required to identify all the
potential constraints on the project and, in particular, the
often lengthy lead-in times of specialist trades associated
with works to historically sensitive buildings.
KENSINGTON
PALACE

12. THE PROJECT:
Designed and built as a fortified palace in the
11th century, the White Tower is the oldest and
architecturally most important single building within
HM Tower of London.
The White Tower used to house a large part of the
Royal Armouries’ collection of arms and armour largely
obscuring the grandeur and spaciousness of the
accommodation. The building fabric was also adversely
affected through the use of finishes, methods and
materials regarded as unsatisfactory and incompatible
with current conservation practice.
The removal of the majority of the Royal Armouries
collection to a new purpose-built museum in Leeds,
provided the opportunity to refurbish and upgrade
the interior of the building and to re-display the Royal
Armouries’ Tower-related collections.
Improvements to visitor circulation and access included
the installation of three large green oak stairways, and a
new 150 m² shop. The project also involved the complete
replacement of M&E, fire protection, security and
environmental control systems.
As an Ancient Scheduled Monument, absolute
commitment was given to conservation requiring close
liaison with English Heritage. The project was carried
out in a phased manner to allow part of the building to be
kept open to the public throughout the project.

13. VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM In 2000 Lendlease was appointed as sole provider
to a project management framework, working on
projects that form part of the Victoria & Albert’s
FuturePlan capital works programme. The framework
was extended in 2007 and re-tendered in 2011 through
OGC. We remain sole PM provider building on an
excellent Client relationship.
The past three years has seen Lendlease involved in
a number of gallery refurbishments and large capital

works projects as part of the FuturePlan, including the
new Medieval & Renaissance galleries, Clothworkers
centre for Fashion, Europe 1600-1800 galleries
and Exhibition Road scheme. This is an ambitious
programme of works which will eventually see nearly
100 per cent of the museum’s visitor space undergoing
refurbishment, as well as the transformation of existing
back of house stores into new gallery space and
the formation of brand new gallery space under the
existing museum.

14. THE PROJECT:
Lendlease was appointed as project managers and
contract administrators on the biggest architectural
intervention at the Victoria & Albert museum to date,
the Exhibition Road Building project.
The project will provide a new entrance, courtyard
and purpose-built subterranean gallery for temporary
exhibitions, showcasing the best of contemporary
design, as well as celebrating the beauty of the V&A’s
existing structure.
Amanda Levete Architects is working with the V&A
on an exciting process to explore the possibility of
installing the first ceramic-tiled courtyard in the UK.
This choice of material responds specifically to the
fabric of the original building and its collections, which
include numerous striking examples of 19th century
decorative ceramics. The courtyard will act as a
venue for installations and events and will be served
by a glass-fronted cafe. Creating the new gallery will
allow greater flexibility for exhibition design, and will
also allow the opportunity to uncover and restore
the stunning 19th century courts currently used for
temporary exhibitions.
EXHIBITION ROAD

15. THE PROJECT:
Lendlease has been appointed by the Science Museum
Group as sole provider of project and programme
management and contract administration on their
ambitious masterplan capital works programme. This
appointment follows on from the successful delivery
of the prestigious showcases in the Museums new
Information age Gallery.
The masterplan aims to reveal more of the original
architectural intent of the estate, attract a more diverse
audience and enable the museum to display their
collection in a more accessible manner. Lendlease is
currently working to deliver the new Research Centre
and Library, Maths Galleries, Interactive Galleries and
medicine Galleries as well as undertaking numerous
feasibility studies for future schemes. The client
relationship has been furthered by the appointment of
Lendlease at the groups museum base in Bradford where
we are undertaking a similar role.

16. THE PROJECT:
The new interactive gallery is the National Media
Museum’s first project in its masterplan to reform and
reinvigorate both local and national interest in
the museum.
Aimed at children aged between 7 and 14 years of age but
relevant to visitors of all ages, the gallery’s objective is to
explore the science, technology, engineering and maths
behind still and moving images by demonstrating the
fundamental principles behind light, sound
and perception.
Thirty interactive exhibits and a large show/
demonstration space will form the new gallery, providing
a balanced learning environment that can capture each
visitor’s imagination for up to one hour. The gallery will be
accompanied by the museum’s demonstrators, whom will
help guide visitors through a very hands-on experience.

17. WEDGWOOD MUSEUM Lendlease provided Project Management services to
the Wedgwood Museum Trust for a new facility that
has put the Museum Trust’s designated collections
back on display.
The new museum also re-unites the ceramics and
manuscripts creating a “one stop shop” for all
Wedgwood history and heritage. The new Museum
adjoins the existing factory and visitor centre at the
Barlaston site.
THE PROJECT:
The project involved the conversion and refurbishment
of existing factory space and new build works. It has
provided the Trust with approximately 4000m² of
space, to house public areas, reading room, library and
manuscript storage, pattern book area, office space
for Curator and staff, education and seminar facilities,
gallery and study collection space.
The project’s funding included a £585 million HLF grant
for which LendLease managed the successful HLF
Stage 2 award.

18. THE PROJECT:
In June 2003 National Museums Scotland launched a
new Vision: ‘A world class museums service that informs,
educates and inspires’. Lendlease was commissioned to
manage a new masterplan for the Royal Museum site that
led to the project works described here.
The main element of works was to create a new street level
entrance, arrivals hall, shop, restaurant and administrative
offices in the existing basement storage area.
New stairs, glazed lifts and escalators were installed
to encourage a greater flow of visitors throughout the
renewed museum.
The Grand Gallery was largely retained in its original form,
but 16 other galleries were completely revised with a
special space created to receive travelling exhibitions from
all over the world.
NATIONAL
MUSEUMS
SCOTLAND

19. THE PROJECT:
Tate Britain is the home of British art, with visitors per
year increasing from 1m in 2000 now over 1.5 million. The
additional visitor numbers require the improvement of
circulation and upgrade of outdated facilities to allow the
best appreciation of the collection the gallery contains.
Tate Britain is organised into quadrants. The last major
gallery refurbishments upgraded the Northern half,
however the Southern half has galleries which operate
within roofs from the original 1890’s construction and
suffer from rainwater ingress.
These galleries have limited and outdated environmental
control – so significant improvements are required to bring
them up to international standards and allow a larger part of
Tate’s collection to be displayed.
Phase 1 is the refurbishment of the South East Quadrant and
southern circulation areas including the Millbank entrance.
The works includes gallery refurbishment at Principal
level; an upgraded schools reception, shop café and
kitchen servery at Lower level and two new feature
staircases; an expanded members area using the
currently under utilised space above the Rotunda at the
upper level and the restoration of the River Room at the
front of the building.
Building services are replaced throughout including new
ventilation plant, heating and chilled water systems, fire
alarms, security, access control and bespoke feature
lighting to the galleries and circulation spaces.
TATE BRITAIN

20. THE PROJECT:
Lendlease worked as principal construction management
contractors for the Imperial war Museum’s complex
refurbishment to mark the centenary of the First
World War.
The main scope of works included a new ground-breaking
First World War Gallery, a reconfigured new central hall,
dramatic new atrium galleries covering conflicts from
the Second World War onwards and a new gallery level E
which can also double as a corporate events space out
of hours.
The project has transformed the IWM, significantly
improving visitor services and creating a new central
dynamic space where the museum’s iconic large objects
are displayed, showing the brutality of the First World War
but also the extraordinary experiences, great innovation
and art at that time.

21. THE PROJECT:
Burlington House is situated in the heart of London’s West
End and houses major resources in terms of architecture
and important works. In recent years the Royal Academy
has embarked on a phased programme that involved the
restoration and modernization of the following:

22. PROJECT MONITORING Providing advisory services and project monitoring
throughout the whole project and HLF stages,
Lendlease worked closely with Stanton Williams to
oversee the design of the new visitor facilities for
Whitby Abbey. This innovative project comprised the
construction of a new exhibition gallery and shop
created within the semi-ruined seventeen-century
Banqueting Hall. It was important that throughout, the
historical significance of the site was maintained and
completed in 2002 the new visitor’s centre has been
widely acclaimed.
With a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the
Heritage and Arts sector, over the past 20 years
Lendlease has also provided project monitoring and
advisory services to various prestigious institutions
throughout the UK working closely with the Heritage
Lottery Fund, Arts Council England and the Scottish
Arts Council.

WHITBY ABBEY VISITOR’S CENTRE DISCOVERY MUSEUM, NEWCASTLE
As Tyneside’s biggest free museum and gateway to the
region’s impressive heritage, the Discovery Museum
underwent a large programme of reconfiguration
works between 2000 and 2004 to bring the historic
structure back to life and improve the overall visitor
experience. Lendlease acted as HLF monitors for the
complete redevelopment which included an additional
floor, raising the atrium roof by one storey and
renewing and refurbishing 80% of the galleries.

23. KING’S COLLEGE LONDON
AND SCIENCE GALLERY
Lendlease was appointed as project managers for this
scheme from RIBA Stage A to completion, commencing
in February 2014.
Science Gallery at King’s will be a new space where
art and science collide, drawing on the strengths of
the College’s nine academic schools to engage over
250,000 visitors per year in cutting-edge research.

THE PROJECT:
the adjacent quadrangle, which is located in a prime
position opposite the Shard on the Guy’s Campus,
the gallery will include exhibition spaces, a theatre,
café and courtyard. With no permanent collection, it
will generate and host dynamic exhibitions, events,
performances and festivals. Free to visit and with a
focus on 15-25 year olds, it will be a flagship project for
culture and science at King’s, enhancing partnership
between College and the cultural sector.

24. THE PROJECT:
Somerset House is one of the most historically and
architecturally interesting sites in England, and this project
to transform it into a major heritage attraction involved the
refurbishment of the public areas including the Great Court,
the ground floor of the South Building and the River Terrace
overlooking the River Thames.
Adaptations to the Great Court included the installation of
55 fountain jets, new granite paving, barriers and disabled
access, and the construction of an underground services
building. The Great Court is now used as a venue for a
range of outdoor cultural events.
The ground floor accommodates a new restaurant, shop and
a new gallery to house the Hermitage Collection, requiring
floor strengthening to the building as well as refurbishment
of the famous Navy Stairs and Seamens Hall.
The River Terrace has benefited from the introduction of a
pedestrian link bridge to Waterloo Bridge as well as outdoor
dining canopies serviced by the restaurant.
The appointment included co-ordination of archaeological
investigations and enabling works requiring close liaison
with both English Heritage and Westminster City Council.
Somerset House remained occupied by a number of tenants
throughout the works, with other contractors also working
on simultaneous projects on the site.
