SharePoint 2010 as an effective Learning Gateway

At UNC Chapel Hill, the User Experience and Assessment department regularly runs usability tests to inform our decision making and prioritize our users’ perspectives as we make changes. But there are more things to test than there are hours in the day. Our projects have a variety of stakeholders who are very interested in improving their services, and we found ourselves with a long list of tests we wanted to run.
To catch up, we adapted Harvard Libraries’ Test Fest model: five tests run simultaneously, with five participants rotating through the set of tests. Over a span of two hours, we completed 25 individual usability tests. In this one event, we caught up on much of our testing backlog.
This session will outline how we planned and executed Test Fest and what we learned from using this approach. We’ll also discuss how we approached analyzing the large amount of qualitative data that was gathered during testing, via affinity diagrams and lots of post-it notes.
The focus of this session is on our methodologies with an aim to include time for attendees to discuss how they would have approached the backlog, setting up Test Fest, and analyzing the data.

The WebPA team is committed to the long-term success of the project.
Developing learning outcomes
This document provides guidance on developing learning outcomes and objectives using a backward design process. It recommends determining 4-8 learning outcomes by thinking backward from desired results, zooming out to core subject aspects, and considering influencing factors. Each outcome should then have 4-5 measurable learning objectives designed to demonstrate mastery, determined by zooming in to subject details and specifying actions students will take that can be measured as evidence of learning. The document provides examples and encourages applying this process to design outcomes and objectives for a specific subject or course.
Sharing Experiences
Shared experiences and expectations asked participants to write down questions about peer assessment tools on post-it notes and place them on the relevant topic posters around the room. The topics were data handling, software installation, integrating technology and teaching, marking algorithm and methodology, and collusion, victimisation, and fairness. Participants then joined the poster group closest to their main question or issue. Each group consolidated questions on their poster into a flip chart under categories of problems needing solutions ("Agghhh") or those with potential solutions already ("Eureka"). Groups then reported back key findings so the facilitators could address issues in afternoon sessions.

Over the last few years the Australasian Council of Online, Distance and eLearning (ACODE) have facilitated two major Benchmarking Summits in Sydney and Canberra, using the ACODE Benchmarks for TEL. These have been unprecedented events within the Australasian higher education, with 35 higher education institutions from five countries involved. To participate each institution first had to undertake a self-assessment of their capacity in TEL against the Performance Indicators in the tool, and then be willing to share this with the other institutions involved. Each institution assessed, at a minimum, two of the benchmarks, with many institutions doing far more. However, for an institution to maximize its experience with this activity they need to be starting their engagement well prior to the formal benchmarking activity. This workshop will help those new to the ACODE benchmarks understand what is required when using this tool. It will provide the wherewithal to ensure your participation is undertaken in a rigorous way. More importantly, it will provide a practical way to facilitate an internal activity, potentially with a view to then be involved in an inter-institutional activity. We will work through a number of different scenarios to help you understand the many facets needing to be considered in undertaking such an activity, and you leave with a strong plan of action for your institution to enhance its capacity in TEL.A Year Later Looking Back And Moving Forward

The Open Education Consortium (OEC) launched a pilot in 2014 to demonstrate the power of re-using openly licensed course content to develop Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) and revitalize and update existing OER/OCW in the process. Converting existing OCW into MOOCs offers OEC member institutions opportunities to gather information about how learners interact with the content and offers learners greater opportunities for interactivity with instructors, peers, and the content. Partnering with edX, OEC has offered member institutions the opportunity to develop MOOCs on a leading technology platform that provides different options for how learners engage in a course. Learners may choose to audit a course or sign-up for a verified certificate for a modest fee that can be used for academic or career enrichment.
Using their existing open courseware and open educational resources (OER), members have launched MOOCs that offer high-quality learning experiences with the option of a verified (fee-based) certificate available to learners throughout the world. Participating members in the pilot include the National Chiao Tung University, Tufts University, University Polytechnic of Madrid, Open University’s TESS India project, Anne Arundel Community College, and the University of Hokkaido. The courses range from the technology of energy, biology of water and health, introduction to helicopters, corporate social responsibility, teacher education, introduction to business, and the effects of radiation.
Panelist from the MOOC development team at Open University, University Polytechnic of Madrid, and University of Hokkaido will share best practices for developing and running openly licensed MOOCs. Lesson learned about developing MOOCs with OER and strategies for enhancing student engagement and interactivity will be shared.

Predicting Engagement in Video Lectures
The explosion of Open Educational Resources (OERs) in the recent years creates the demand for scalable, automatic approaches to process and evaluate OERs, with the end goal of identifying and recommending the most suitable educational materials for learners. We focus on building models to find the characteristics and features involved in context-agnostic engagement (i.e. population-based), a seldom researched topic compared to other contextualised and personalised approaches that focus more on individual learner engagement. Learner engagement, is arguably a more reliable measure than popularity/number of views, is more abundant than user ratings and has also been shown to be a crucial component in achieving learning outcomes. In this work, we explore the idea of building a predictive model for population-based engagement in education. We introduce a novel, large dataset of video lectures for predicting context-agnostic engagement and propose both cross-modal and modality-specific feature sets to achieve this task. We further test different strategies for quantifying learner engagement signals. We demonstrate the use of our approach in the case of data scarcity. Additionally, we perform a sensitivity analysis of the best performing model, which shows promising performance and can be easily integrated into an educational recommender system for OERs.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
