This document summarizes a study that investigated parasites associated with wild-caught houseflies in Awka, Nigeria. Researchers collected over 2,000 flies from six locations using fly traps baited with foods. Eight fly species were identified, with the housefly (Musca domestica) being the most common. Parasites isolated from the external surfaces of the flies included Entamoeba histolytica cysts, hookworm eggs, Ascaris lumbricoides eggs, and Trichuris trichiura eggs. The study reveals that houseflies and other wild flies can harbor parasites on their bodies and transmit diseases, emphasizing the need for improved sanitation.
