Mosquitoes have existed for over 150 million years and there are over 3,500 species worldwide. The most common types that affect humans are Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex. Mosquitoes breed in any standing water and go through a life cycle of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Female mosquitoes use visual, chemical, and heat cues to find a blood host to feed on to develop eggs, typically preferring dark colors, movement, breath and body odors, and higher temperatures.
