BUSINESS LIBRARY
INTRODUCTION
• Business organization play very important role in
the development of a nation apart from science and
technology of the country. But this progress and
development of any nation cannot be achieved in the
absence of libraries which hold in its stock very
important content in the form of information and
only this institution can disseminate in an effective
manner. These libraries act as a catalogue agents in
dissemination.
• Business is different catalogue under special
library. These libraries are not school of commerce,
where people are supposed to learn commerce but a
place where skilled commerce people go to obtain
their information. This includes libraries attached
to business houses, trade organization, industrial
organization and commercial organization.
• Business trade and industrial libraries are different
from each other in some respect . However the
common thing among theme is that their motive is
profit making which lacking in other type of special
libraries
HISTORY
The concept of a public business library was
first developed by John Cotton Dana, who was
the head of the New York pubic library in New
Jersy. John Cotton Dana opened the first
Business Library in the country in Newaire in
1904.
Kristein Business Library opened on May 7,1930.
It was the first public library in LIS to be built as
a gift of abusiness man.
DEFINITION
“Business library is the library which cover
services aiming to provide information about
business, trade, industries and other related
field.”
“Business library may be defined either as a
library which provide information ,which a
business needs in order to operate or as a library
, which provide information relating specially to
companies, markets, products and management
topics”
PURPOSE
(1) Provide information services which enables the
members of the organization to keep track of
the development in their field of business,
trade, industries.
(2) Library searches literature exhaustively and
bring it to their notice before the start of a
project to be undertaken by the organization.
(3) Provide information promptly, thereby saving
time of the user.
(4)It supports the teaching and research activities
of the business related persons, local corporate
community and general public.
• To keep abstract the users of current business
happening in the world.
COLLECTION
• The collection in business library is
different then the other special
libraries. In addition to the
acquisition of conventional material
like book and journals such libraries
dominated in the category of non-
materials like trade catalogue,
standard, patent, specification,
company report, market survey
report, news paper, maps and atlas.

The business and economic collection
encom- passes subject area such as:
accounting adver- tizing, business
history, import and export, fin- ance,
international business, labour
manage- ment, personal relation,
market research,print collection.

• Business and trade annual
• Market research report journals
• Trade literature

• Maintain a microfilms collection of
periodical consisting of trade and

alphabetically by title and journals are
available. The business library are also

librarian has to keep in regular touch with

agencies developing in the same or allied

provides their users with immediate and current
