Collection Development (that based on the five laws of S.R.Ranghanathan) is very important part of Collection Management. If we don’t adopt advanced technologies, collection then we can never fulfill the need of advanced users and libraries will become freeze, this is against the 5th law of Ranghanathan that “ Library is a growing organism”.

This presentation was done as part of an examination into the process of weeding in a library. Weeding as we describe is an essential part of any Collection Management policy and is useful not only for the library, but the patrons.
Library education was initially a technical education that was acquired on the job. Practical work in a library, based on a good education in schools, was the only way to train librarians.
It took quite a long time to introduce library education as a subject and has been taught at different levels in the universities of the world.

The arrival and enormous growth rate of digital contents have fundamentally changed the way in which content is made available to library users. In the recent years, libraries are acquiring more and more electronic resources (e-resources) because of perceived benefits, such as easy access to information and its comprehensiveness. Due to the influx of e-resources in libraries, the collection, acquisition, and maintenance of these resources have become complicated issues to deal with. This has forced libraries to devise strategies to manage and deliver e-resources conveniently. Therefore, “Management of E-resources” or “Electronic Resource Management” (ERM) has become a challenge for library professionals that needs to be addressed through research and practice. To meet these challenges, library professionals and content providers have decided to develop ‘Electronic Resource Management System’ (ERMS) for management of e-resources in a more systematic way.

Classification has always been the backbone of all Library operations and without it, library is definitely going to suffer in its recourse and to find a particular piece of information from unorganized heap of knowledge is almost impossible. The library classification is core instrument for organizing and retrieval of the documents stored in a library. At present era they are the navigation tools for locating and retrieving documents in more precisely and relevantly. The electronic versions of the DDC and UDC and other classification schemes make it possible to realize the potential of library classification to improve subject retrieval.

The Jisc-led National Monograph Strategy (NMS) roadmap set out a number of recommendations, including the design and implementation of a National Monograph Knowledgebase (a ‘Monobase’) as core infrastructure for finding and managing print and digital monographs. This session will report on progress towards establishing that Knowledgebase, set out forward plans, and invite the breakout attendees to discuss ideal outcomes and give their own perspectives on the work.
Last three decades have witnessed the information explosion. New ICT systems have increased the generation of more and more information and multiplied the knowledge bases. Every day more and more information is digitally born. The ordinary user is unable to cope with the Internet to select, choose, download, store and retrieve the right information they need from this information deluge. Yet the modern generation prefers digital format due to its advantages. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. “acquisition and collection development focuses on methodological and topical

information resources.”

“collection development” as “the process of planning a stock acquisition
programmed not simply to cater for immediate needs but to build a coherent and reliable
collection over a number of years, to meet the objective of the service”.

4. Objectives of Collection Development :
A library should acquire and provide all the relevant reading materials to its clientele so
that the basic function of the library are fulfilled from the vast amount of literature, which
are also increasing day by day.
A library should acquire all other books on the related topics;
A library should contain all the reading materials pertaining to the history and culture of
a particular country, city, place or institution as the case may be
5. The main purpose of Collection Development Policy:
Identify the underlying principles of collection development and equality of access;
Identify all significant factors, both internal and external, that impact on the development
of the collection;
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the collection
Provide framework in which the collection can meet community needs;
Establish standards for a healthy collection;
Assist in the development of funding priorities and alternatives.

To conclude, Collection development is the fundamental process of librarianship and

of the user community and hence there is a need for national or atleast state level
collection development policies both for printed and e-resources to ensure need
based collections in the academic library setup.
