E-RESOURCES IN AN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

Introduction:
 Collection Development is one of the most important activities
in
library and Information Centre.
 Book Acquisition to Document Collection to
Collection Development
The Term concerned with print, non print, E resource and
online
resources.
 Now libraries are shifting to new media namely E resource for
their collection development
Definitions :
“acquisition and collection development focuses on methodological and topical
themes pertaining to acquisition of print and other analogue library materials (by
purchase, exchange, gift, legal deposit), and the licensing and purchase of electronic
information resources.”
- IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and
Institutions)
“collection development” as “the process of planning a stock acquisition
programmed not simply to cater for immediate needs but to build a coherent and reliable
collection over a number of years, to meet the objective of the service”.
- Harrods’s Librarian Glossary (6th edition)
Objectives of Collection Development :
A library should acquire and provide all the relevant reading materials to its clientele so
that the basic function of the library are fulfilled from the vast amount of literature, which
are also increasing day by day.
A library should acquire all other books on the related topics;
A library should contain all the reading materials pertaining to the history and culture of
a particular country, city, place or institution as the case may be
The main purpose of Collection Development Policy:
Identify the underlying principles of collection development and equality of access;
Identify all significant factors, both internal and external, that impact on the development
of the collection;
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the collection
Provide framework in which the collection can meet community needs;
Establish standards for a healthy collection;
Assist in the development of funding priorities and alternatives.
GUIDELINES FOR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OF E-RESOURCES
General Criteria:.
Appropriate intellectual level, depth of coverage and quality of
information for user population
Reputable, reliable, and authoritative producer
Information and updates are current, accurate and complete
Electronic format provides greater accessibility to information over
other formats
Uniqueness of information
Formats
Citation/abstract databases
Full text article databases
Full text reference sources online
Graphics and multimedia files
E-books (selective)
Access
Delivery via the web
Authentication by IP address (rather than passwords or logins)
Compatibility with the Library’s existing proxy server and software
User-Friendliness
Availability of on-screen help and/or tutorials
Basic and guided/advanced searching
Helpful error messages (i.e., error message indicates specific problem(s) and provides
possible alternatives)
Ability to print, save, and email results and/or articles
Cost Considerations
Cost-effectiveness (including the availability and cost of updates and backfiles when
appropriate)
Ability to sustain cost for the foreseeable future
Potential usage and/or uniqueness of information justifing cost
Vendor Considerations
Provides responsive customer service and technical support that is available during
library working hours
Availability and quality of training programs
Reputation and business record suggests continued support for the product via
updates or new versions
Documentation is thorough and clear
Technical Considerations
Meets usual and customary technical standards in the industry
Allows for local customizations via system administration access for the Library
Product is compatible with the Library’s existing and/or future hardware
Product is compatible with standard web browsers if accessible via the web
Usage statistics are readily available in a user-friendly format
Further as a Librarian in the academic setup has to take care of the following factors
before acquiring electronic resources
Content
Access
Design
Cost and pricing
Licensing etc
CONCLUSION
To conclude, Collection development is the fundamental process of librarianship and
as such special care has to be given to ensure fair selection to meet the right needs
of the user community and hence there is a need for national or atleast state level
collection development policies both for printed and e-resources to ensure need
based collections in the academic library setup.

Introduction:  Collection Development is one of the most important activities in library and Information Centre.  Book Acquisition to Document Collection to Collection Development The Term concerned with print, non print, E resource and online resources.  Now libraries are shifting to new media namely E resource for their collection development
  • 3. Definitions : “acquisition and collection development focuses on methodological and topical themes pertaining to acquisition of print and other analogue library materials (by purchase, exchange, gift, legal deposit), and the licensing and purchase of electronic information resources.” - IFLA (The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions) “collection development” as “the process of planning a stock acquisition programmed not simply to cater for immediate needs but to build a coherent and reliable collection over a number of years, to meet the objective of the service”. - Harrods’s Librarian Glossary (6th edition)

Objectives of Collection Development : A library should acquire and provide all the relevant reading materials to its clientele so that the basic function of the library are fulfilled from the vast amount of literature, which are also increasing day by day. A library should acquire all other books on the related topics; A library should contain all the reading materials pertaining to the history and culture of a particular country, city, place or institution as the case may be

The main purpose of Collection Development Policy: Identify the underlying principles of collection development and equality of access; Identify all significant factors, both internal and external, that impact on the development of the collection; Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the collection Provide framework in which the collection can meet community needs; Establish standards for a healthy collection; Assist in the development of funding priorities and alternatives.
  • 6. GUIDELINES FOR COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT OF E-RESOURCES General Criteria:. Appropriate intellectual level, depth of coverage and quality of information for user population Reputable, reliable, and authoritative producer Information and updates are current, accurate and complete Electronic format provides greater accessibility to information over other formats Uniqueness of information

Formats Citation/abstract databases Full text article databases Full text reference sources online Graphics and multimedia files E-books (selective) Access Delivery via the web Authentication by IP address (rather than passwords or logins) Compatibility with the Library’s existing proxy server and software
  • 8. User-Friendliness Availability of on-screen help and/or tutorials Basic and guided/advanced searching Helpful error messages (i.e., error message indicates specific problem(s) and provides possible alternatives) Ability to print, save, and email results and/or articles Cost Considerations Cost-effectiveness (including the availability and cost of updates and backfiles when appropriate) Ability to sustain cost for the foreseeable future Potential usage and/or uniqueness of information justifing cost

Vendor Considerations Provides responsive customer service and technical support that is available during library working hours Availability and quality of training programs Reputation and business record suggests continued support for the product via updates or new versions Documentation is thorough and clear Technical Considerations Meets usual and customary technical standards in the industry Allows for local customizations via system administration access for the Library Product is compatible with the Library’s existing and/or future hardware Product is compatible with standard web browsers if accessible via the web Usage statistics are readily available in a user-friendly format
  • 10. Further as a Librarian in the academic setup has to take care of the following factors before acquiring electronic resources Content Access Design Cost and pricing Licensing etc
  • 11. CONCLUSION To conclude, Collection development is the fundamental process of librarianship and as such special care has to be given to ensure fair selection to meet the right needs of the user community and hence there is a need for national or atleast state level collection development policies both for printed and e-resources to ensure need based collections in the academic library setup.
