The Indian Library Association (ILA) was founded in 1933 in Calcutta to represent the entire library profession in India. Its main objectives are to promote high standards of librarianship, library legislation, education and training, as well as improve library services. The ILA organizes an annual All India Library Conference and publishes the ILA Journal, newsletter, and conference proceedings. It is governed by a constitution and council that is elected every two years, and works to advance libraries through conferences, publications, and participation in official bodies.

 Registered society, with headquarters now located at Delhi.

 Main aim was to form the Indian Library Association.
 Initiatives taken by the ILA have had an impact over library development in the country.
 In 1992, the ILA successfully organized an International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) conference at Delhi.

2. Objectives of ILA
The Association aims at establishing high standards of librarianship and library services in the country.
It has the following objectives:
 Promotion of library movement and enactment of library legislation;
 Developing Library and Information Science education,
 Training and research, betterment of library personnel,
 Improvement of library services;
 Cooperation at the national and international levels,
 Promotion of standards, norms, services and guidelines, and

3.  Providing a forum for professionals and publication of materials.
 Establishment of libraries, documentation centres and assistance to the same.
 Publication of serial and other publications for dissemination of information;
 Providing a common forum by organizing conferences, seminars and meetings;

 An-All India Library Conference is held every year at some place in the country. The host institution is either a university, an institution or a local library

5. Organisation & Membership
 Duly approved written Constitution.
 Bye-laws to codify procedures.
 The general body elects, for a two-year term,
 A President, Six Vice Presidents, a General Secretary and Council Members up to 20.
 One representative of each member state library association and ex-Presidents of the Association are also members of
the Council.
 An Executive Committee consisting of the President, one Vice-President, the General Secretary, the Treasurer, two
Secretaries, P.R.O. and three Council members look after routine management.

6. Organisation & Membership
 While the general body meets once a year, usually at the time of All India Library Conference.
 Council meets at least once in a quarter and the Executive Committee meets as often as necessary.
 The Annual Report and Accounts of the Association are passed at the General Body Meeting.
 The membership of the Association comprises patrons, life, ordinary members, institutional and associate members.

Patron Rs. 5,000/-.
