1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Site Introduction
The proposed community library is located in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala
Lumpur. The selected site is east facing, allowing abundant of daylight to enter
through the front of the building. It aids us to limit the amount of artificial lighting and
fully utilize the strategic given location for the library by maximizing the use of natural
illumination.

2.0 LIGHTING ANALYSIS
2.1 Daylight Factor Analysis
Space A: Expandable Event Space
The selected space is the expandable event space on the second floor of the library.
Surrounded by openings all around, the event space is highly illuminated by natural
lighting.
Floor Area (m 2) 98.65
Area of facade exposed to light (m 2) Perimeter: 7.6m / Height: 4m
Total Area: 30.4
Area of skylight (m 2) 4
Exposed area to floor area ratio
(Daylight factor)
(30.4+4) / 98.65
= 0.35 (35%)
= 3.5
Daylight factor, DF 3.5 = (Ei/20000) x 100%
Ei = 3.5 x 200
= 700 lux
Daylight Contour
During the day, natural daylight could enter the space from the skylight in the middle
of the building or the east-facing front facade. The main event space will be highly
illuminated, and the book collection area would generally be a little dimmer.
Section Analysis
The section shows the morning sunlight entering the space at 10am. Natural sunlight
penetrates through the facade and the skylight, enhancing the brightness of the space
naturally.
Space A: Expandable Event Space

Artificial lighting are later added within the spaces to further enhance the illumination
in the event space area.
Recessed lights are used, lined along the side of the space, illuminating the general
shelved book collections and the reading zone in the library.
Section Analysis
The illumination of the event space with artificial recessed lights.

Space B: Cafeteria
The selected space is the public cafeteria, located at the end of the ground floor by
the back entrance of the library. It faces west, thus artificial lighting is used to enhance
the illumination of the space.

Pendant lights are lined along the cafeteria space, and stretched across the coffee
bar to illuminate the entire space. Due to the placement of the elevator not being
taken into account, only 11 lamps are allocated.
