The document discusses the lighting design proposals for two spaces within a community library - the library reading area on the first floor and the main office on the third floor. For the reading area, recessed round lighting fixtures are proposed to provide ambient lighting and maximize the sense of space. Daylighting calculations are presented. For the office, which has limited daylight, recessed round lighting is also proposed along with artificial lighting calculations. The document provides information on lighting types, contours, calculations and design proposals for both spaces.

A community library is a library that is accessible by the general public and is usually funded
from public sources. The concept of the library is to aim resolve the indigenous relationship
between the old fashioned and modern world society through targeting to bring in more of the
interactions between the youthful and timeless aspect of the streets. The segregation has
resulted in visible discrimination between the two districts which ultimately leads to people of
one race began to show hatred or dislike towards another race and this causes the local
community to distance out themselves from one another.
The library aims to invite different categories of the community which including the
children, students, workers, parents and visitors. Each floor provides different spaces to
accommodate their needs allowing them to linger and spend time for longer periods. Each level
serves different group of people where the genre of books collection are provided.
Site Plan
7. 3.0 Space A: Library Reading area.
The chosen space is located at the South side of the site on the first floor.During the daytime
natural light can reach upon this area from the south through the large area of glass window
panels but there is not much light coming from the West since its all covered up by the
shophouses wall.
8. 3.1 Lightning Contour.
3.2 Types of Light to be used.
Recessed Round Lighting Fixtures
Recessed lighting makes a room feel bigger because it actually takes up less visual space in
the room.Because the light cans are set into the ceiling itself, nothing hangs down to interrupt
the visual space of the ceiling furthermore recessed lightning also makes a room bigger due to
an effect called wall washing.
9. Advantages
● Accent, Create a soft glow coming out from the sides of the object causing the object to
draw your eye to it naturally, Also recessed lights are easily hidden from plain sight and
do not draw unwanted attention to themselves.
● Space, Creates the illusion of more space recessed lights give off a soft subtle glow
which blurs the boundaries of the room and the space appears larger than it actually is.
● Weight, Lightweight nature of the completed units.
● Aesthetics, Can be adjusted to provide either pleasant ambient lighting or accent or
spot lightening as circumstances require.
● Efficient, Work more efficiently without the use of obtrusive light fixtures.Provide
dimming effects that are easy to control.
Disadvantages.
● Installation, More difficult to install than a traditional fixture
● Permanency, Once it has been installed you cannot move it
● Bulbs, Use different types of light bulbs than a traditional light. The bulbs are smaller and
differently shaped than traditional light bulbs.
● Cost, Higher than a traditional light fixture. The cost of bulbs and installation of recessed
lights may also be more expensive compared to a traditional fixture.
● Safety, You must choose safe recessed lighting such as insulation contact IC rated
lighting An IC rated light will not be a safety risk. But lights that are not IC rated may
create heat which can lead to fire since recessed lightning is installed so that the
housing is in contact with home insulation.
14. 4.0 Space 2: Office 3rd Floor.
The Office is located on the third floor of the library and is a standard room with curtain walls on
the right and left side,The room is positioned at the back of the building as it holds a number of
precious collections that need to be secure and protected. The office is shaded most of the day
due to the low ceiling and the lack of nearby fenestration opening towards the center of the
library.Hence there is a need to implement artificial lighting most of the time.
