2. INTRODUCTION
Our assigned site is along Jalan Besar in South Klang. The sites are scattered
with various communities such as tourism, locals and immigrants. Besides,
the site its own nodes and landmarks such as the tourism spot, commercial
blocks, transportation port and etc. We were given a task to design a
community library to revitalize the community.
The site has its rich elements such as the architecture of the old buildings, the
unity of different races living together in a community and the way the
people in South Klang enjoy their lifestyle in the slow pace.
It is an obvious observation that there is a distance between the older
generation and the younger generation separated by technology. As it is the
younger generation are more technology while minority of the older
generation do not put their hands on electronic devices. In addition to that,
the youths move out to start their lives in the city leaving behind the olds.
Therefore, my design intention is to break the barrier between the two
generations by using technology as a way to empower the old so they can
keep up where the young ones would teach them and at the same time they
can communicate.
The purpose of the spaces will not be achieved without the proper calculation
of passive design strategies of lighting.
10. 2.0 LIGHT ANALYSIS EXECUTION
2.1 DAYLIGHT FACTOR ANALYSIS
Daylight factor is defined as the ratio of interior illuminance, E, to available
outdoor illuminance, E, which is the obstructed horizontal exterior
illuminance.
12. SPACE A - READING AREA
FIRST FLOOR PLAN
SECTION A-A
13. This reading area is located by the rear side of the building which
experiences slight morning sun with only a layer of facade covering it.
The room is located on the highest floor of the library right on top of the
entrance. It is a standard room sized space covered with railing and a layer of
wooden facade. It is a space for youths and olds to read books together to
strengthen bond .
The room is shaded by the afternoon sun but well lighted during sunrise. It
allows moderate infill of natural light from the facade with PSALI lighting
strategy augmented.. With the timber facade, it creates nice light and shadow
effect from the morning sun. The interior artficial must be in accordance to
MS1525 and JKR guidelines to ensure comfort in activities and safety

15. Daylighting Calculation
Daylight Factor Calculations
Floor area (m2) 36.3m2 (5.5 x 6.6)
Area of facades exposed to light
(W,m2)
L = 6.6m, H=4.2m
Area of facade exposed
= 6.6m x 4.2m
=23.1m2
Total area of inteernal surfaces
(A,m2)
L= 6.6m, W=5.5m, H=4.1m
Total area = 2(6.6 x 5.5) + 2(5.5 x 4.1) + 2
(6.6 x 4.1)
=72.6 + 45.1 + 54.12
=171.8m2
Glass transmittance corrected
for dirt (T)
0.6 (for double glazed window in clean
environment)
Visible sky angle indegrees
from entre of window (degree)

Average reflectance of space of
Space A (R)
0.4
Average Daylight Factor (DF)
= (23.1 / 171.8) x 30
= 0.13 x 30
= 4.0 %
16. With a daylight factor of 4%, it falls under MS1525's regulation as being
'good' . This is important as the reading area holds activities for youths and
elderlies throughout the day which include learning and knowledge exchange
where they need enough light to work on, thus having adequate daylighting is
paramount to ensure visual comfort of its users.

18.
19. There are 7 light fittings in Space A to achive a minimum of 300 lux standard
requirement by MS 1525 and JKR for reading area. The light are seperated
into 2 switches, A and B to balance the intensity and consumption of the light
of the interior. During afternoon time, light B is switched on to illuminate the
darker space of the interior that sunlight cannot reach. During early morning
and night when there are not external sources of light, all lights are turned on
to achieve sufficient lighting for ambience and for the activities to be carried
on.
20. The cafeteria is located at the third floor of the buildimg which experience
afternoon sun from 1pm till 5pm with only a layer of wooden facade.
It is bigger than a standard room sized space protected by railings. It is a
space for people from all ages to enjoy meal together and also to allow more
passive contact.
The room is shaded by the morning sun but well lighted starting from 1pm as
it allows moderate infill of natural light from the facade with PSALI lighting
strategy augmented. With the continuity pattern of the wooden facade, it
creates nice light rays into the space. The interior artificial lighting must be in
accordance to MS1525 and JKR guidelines to ensure comfort in activities
and safety

Daylight Factor Calculations
23. With a daylight factor of 4.1%, it falls under MS1525's regulation as being
'good' . This is important as the cafe area holds two activities for youths and
elderlies throughout the day which include reading and eating where they
need enough light to work on, thus having adequate daylighting is paramount
to ensure visual comfort of its users.
26. There are 14 light fittings in Space B to achieve minimum of 300 - 500 lux
standard requirement by MS1525 and JKR guideline for reading area. The
lights are separated into 3 switches A, B and C. Light C is fitted near to the
window so that it could stay turned off during the dayfor light saving as the
area is exposed to natural sunlight throughout the whole afternoon. Switches
A, B and C are to be turned on due to the requirement of lux value of 500 by
MS1525 as to serve adequate and comfort space.
