Interception is the process where raindrops are prevented from hitting the soil by plant leaves, stems, and branches. Water is intercepted by vegetation and held on surfaces until exceeding capacity, then falls as throughfall or runs down branches as stemflow. Some intercepted water is lost through evaporation from plant surfaces, known as interception loss.
