Based on Marzano's essential 8, this is the workshop presentation for k12 teachers on all 9 research based instructional strategies that,when implemented right, will improve students academic achievement. The presentation is long, so in every session teachers were given the opportunity to self-assess their needs for improvement in 3 strategies only and so each workshop focused on different strategies to cater for the need of the attendees.
Experiential
Experiential learning involves learning through reflection on doing hands-on direct experiences. Adult learners can better understand and retain information when they apply their life experiences to formal or informal learning settings. Experiential learning engages our senses and is embedded in long-term memory. Instructors can incorporate experiential learning through internships, simulations, field trips and work-based learning to help students make real-world connections and apply their knowledge in practical scenarios. This type of active, experiential learning helps students retain information for longer periods compared to more passive learning methods.
ARCS MODEL
The ARCS model of motivation was developed by John Keller and focuses on four key aspects of motivating learners: Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction. The model is important for motivating learners in e-learning courses. Attention involves boosting learner interest through unexpected or surprising elements. Relevance shows the usefulness of content and how it applies to the real world. Confidence develops success expectations and allows learners to feel in control. Satisfaction involves learners achieving goals through practice and testing activities.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
