 It is a specialized connective tissue.
 The average human has 5 liters of
blood.
 It is a transporting fluid.
 It carries vital substances to all
parts of the body.

4. BLOOD AND IT’S COMPONENTS
Liquid fluid consisting of following
components:
a) Cells (45%)
b) Plasma (55%)
c) Serum= plasma- fibrinogen

5. PLASMA
Liquid part of blood.
Plasma transports:-
 Soluble food molecules,
 Waste products,
 Hormones,
 Antibodies.
COMPOSITION:
a) Water (90%)
b) Solid (10%)

6. CELLULAR SUBSTANCES
 Red blood cells (RBC) /
Erythrocytes
 White blood cells (WBC) /
Leukocytes
 Platelets / Thrombocytes

7. RED BLOOD CELLS (RBCs)
 Circular, biconcave and non-
nucleated,
 Contains hemoglobin,
 Transport Oxygen,
 It is specialized to do this.
 Also carry some CO2.
Functions:
 Respiratory function
 Acid base balance
 Ion balance

8. WHITE BLOOD CELLS (WBCs)
 The bodies “defence”,
 Part of the immune system,
 Much larger than RBCs’
 Have a nucleus,
 4000-13000 per mm3
 2 types
Phagocytes and lymphocytes
Functions
 Phagocytosis
 Antibody production
 Heparin secretion

9. PLATELETS
 Platelets produce tiny fibrin threads,
 These form a web-like mesh that traps
blood cells,
 These harden forming a “clot” or
“scab”,
 150,000 to 400,000 per mm3.
Functions:
 Haematostatic function
 Initiate blood clotting
 Defensive mechanism

10. HEMOGLOBIN
 Red pigment inside the red blood cell,
 Contains two parts– 1. Globin, 2. Heam,
 Gives red blood cells their color,
 Can carry up to 4 molecules of O2,
 Associates and dissociates with O2,
 Contains Iron.
FUNCTION
 Reverses iron and protein
 Transports O2 from lungs to the tissue, CO from
tissue to the lungs
 Reverses iron and protein

11. ABO BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM
 The most important and well
studied blood group system.
 Discovered by Karl Land
Steiner (1900-1901)

12. ABO BLOOD GROUP TYPE
 Blood group A- If A antigen
is present.
 Blood group B- If B antigen
is present.
 Blood group AB-If both A
and B antigens are present.
 Blood group O- If neither A
nor B is present.

13. UNIVERSAL DONORS VS UNIVERSAL
ACCEPTORS
Universal donor:
 Can donate their blood to anyone.
 Have O negative blood group.
Universal acceptors:
 Can accept blood from anyone.
 Have AB positive blood group.

14. TYPES OF Rh BLOOD GROUP SYSTEM
 Rh Positive:
Posses Rh antigen on surface of RBCs
 Rh Negative:
Lack Rh antigen on surface of RBCs

15. ERYTHROBLASTOSIS FETALIS
Hemolytic disease of new born.
OCCURRENCE:
 If a mother with Rh have a fetus
with Rh.
 Mother develop Rh antibodies
against fetus Rh.
 These antibodies will react with
subsequent Rh fetus.
 Lead to bursting of RBCs
Rh-
mother
