The purpose of this presentation is to present high-interest low-stress games and activities to help adult learners develop pronunciation, spelling, phonics, word attack and memory skills in interesting and fun ways.
Providing learners with a core body of information about English phonics rules, or patterns, enables them to connect letter patterns and the sounds they represent. There are many people who complain about the irregularities of English spelling, but I think it is more helpful to show students the many spelling patterns that exist in English.

ENGAGE STUDENTS
Let’s highlight recognition and application of the patterns that exist in English orthography and foster connections among reading, spelling, listening, and pronunciation.
I found that my students had problems with sound contrasts like this, so I created these games. My students loved the games and my colleagues kept asking me to lend them the games. I’ve gotten students of all ages hooked! They learn, and they have fun, they’re communicating with each other. http://www.sunburstmedia.com/lookinthelake.html

Many students have problems with spelling. English spelling is difficult for many speakers, including native English speakers, because there is no correspondence between a letter and a sound, as there is in Spanish.
Many students have a limited vocabulary.
Many students can't complete even simple writing assignments like \"describe your room\" because of a lack of basic vocabulary.
Students need to increase their vocabulary, learn to spell accurately, and recognise words.
Most teachers can't spend much time teaching vocabulary and spelling. There's no time in class to teach vocabulary or spelling in depth. The majority of class time focuses on grammar, reading, writing, and listening comprehension. There just isn't enough time to devote to spelling or systematic vocabulary development. There are too many other things to do.
Many EFL students don’t know how words sound. They may have learned written English, but not how to associate the written symbols with spoken words and so they don't recognize words in spoken English. Many students have no idea how to pronounce words like
pint
or
suite
.
With
Spelling Fusion
, students learn vocabulary of over 3,700 words by seeing and hearing words in context. This is far more than is possible to teach using typical ESL vocabulary or reading books.
Spelling Fusion
presents both the singular and plural forms of all words. This is important because dropping +s at the ends of plural words is a major problem for most students.
In no other dictionary do students hear and spell both forms.
With the Everyday Spelling series, students actually write in the workbooks, there’s no keyboarding. For some of our students, whose native script does not use the Roman alphabet (Arabic, Israeli, Farsi, Chinese) as well as those who lack literacy in their native language benefit from the practice of physically shaping the letters with pencil on paper.
Do any of your students need to learn to physically form the letters, pencil on paper? Learn to shape capital letters, small letters? Need to use their kinesthetic and tactile senses in addition to their visual senses to learn to spell in English?
Solution: Everyday Spelling Workbooks
