Jealousy in Villains of Different Works
Jealousy, it is what gets the best and, of course, the worst of people. Iago in Shakespeare s play
Othello is one of the worst villains out there. Other villains, such as Scar in Disney s The Lion King ,
Jafar in Disney s Aladdin , and Mother Gothel from Disney s Tangled have closely related motives and
jealous personalities. All four betray and kill for reasons they believe are going to further the lives
they intend to lead after their master plans. The stem of the jealousy roots from never having enough
power and feeling inferior. Iago s jealousy rises mainly from a his boss, Othello, picking Cassio to be
his right hand man. One Michael Cassio, a Florentine, a fellow almost damn d in a fair ... Show more

The fact that they only care about themselves is clearly and openly show in the end. It s all about the
honor and loyalty the believe they have. Iago s betrayal happens to a couple different people, just like
Jafar betrays a couple of people. On the other hand, Scar and Mother Gothel really only betray one
other person. Scar betrays his nephew, Simba, by brain washing him to run away from his land/home.
Meanwhile some of Scar s henchmen cause a stampede that is intended to kill Simba and his father
Mufasa. Although Simba survives the stampede, his uncle Scar still tried to kill him. Mother Gothel
goes back on her word because she steals a child from a kingdom and makes it her own to gain her
youth from Rapunzel s hair. Gothel never tells Rapunzel about her life back in town as the daughter of
the king and queen. She feeds Rapunzel lies to get her to live with her. She does not want Rapunzel to
live out her dreams and leave her because without Rapunzel s magic hair she has no way of turning
young again. In Aladdin, Jafar is trying to retrieve a magic lamp so, he seeks help from a young boy.
The young boy named Aladdin and, he has to venture down into The Cave of Wonders . Jafar tells
Aladdin that if he find the magic lamp and brings it back to Jafar that he can have the rest of the gold
and treasures in the cave. Of course Jafar betrays Aladdin by pushing him back down the cave so he

What Do Theories of Face Perception Tell Us About Object...
What do theories of face perception tell us about object perception in general?
Introduction
Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human face.
The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for object
recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent meaning that
performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint. However when
considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that objects can be
recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. This is due to his belief that objects are recognised
from the individual basic shapes that make the whole object; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

(Similar to effects noted in patients with Agnosia, to be further discussed.) However Tarr and BĂźlthoff
(1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive practice at
viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition was better from
familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans viewpoint invariant
theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object recognition is slower and less
accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be compared to the importance of the
inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less accurately recognised when viewed upside
down.
This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face
recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces. The
expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans having
expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early age and
there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which facilitates holistic
processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as recognition of snakes and
dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response, the same hard wired responses to
faces may also be innate in order to

Fayol’s Management Theory Is Still Relevant Today.
Introduction Henri Fayol s theory was almost a century old and was originally written in French.
Further review on several journal articles has led to an overview background of Fayol s working life
which provided the foundation that conceptualized his theory. According to Wren (2001), Fayol was
appointed as the Director in a mining company, Decazeville, where he succeeded to turnaround the
company to become profitable. Fayol was the first person to classify the functions of a manager s job.
Fayol (1949; as cited in Wren, 2001) identified five key functions in managerial works.as planning,
organising, command, coordination and control. Planning consists of any managerial work that
involves setting goals and coordinating actions to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These human resources will be managed by managers as depicted by Fayol (1949; as cited in Wren,
2001). Employees with specific area of expertise will be tasked to act on the set goals and plans. For
example, Autodesk managers and human resource staff will profile potential candidates on their skill
sets and job scope. Companies go across borders in search of new market opportunities and in turn,
have to focus on increased productivity as competition intensifies. Organization structure and job
design are carefully selected by managers to ensure that work are coordinated well with less hurdles to
achieve the established goals in the planning process (Wren, 2001). In the Autodesk s Sales
department, the structure is similar to a family tree where the Sales Managers coordinates the works of
the Resellers and report to the Sales Director who is in charge of the department. According to
Mintzberg (1980, as cited in Bartol et al, 2011), Fayol s leading function for managerial work is
categorized under the interpersonal role of any managers. With effective leadership in place, managers
can direct and redirect employees through effective communication and use of discipline and
remuneration. This is one of the key to stay on top of the organisation goals and strategies that have
been planned. Thus, the command element of getting the optimum return from all employees in the
interest of the whole concern is critical and applicable. For example, under

The Epidemic Of Tobacco Use Essay
Salivary Biomarkers
Introduction:
Worldwide, tobacco use continues to be one of the leading causes of preventable death and has been
estimated to kill more than five million people annually1. Lately, the epidemic of tobacco use has
shifted from developed to developing countries2. It is estimated that by 2030 almost 10 million people
will die from tobacco use per year, with 70% of these deaths occurring in developing countries. India
accounts for one sixth of the tobacco related illnesses worldwide and is estimated to face an
exponential increase in tobacco related mortality from 1.4% of all deaths in 1990 to 13.3% in 20203.
In 2010, out of 52.8 million deaths that occurred worldwide out of which 34.5 million deaths were
attributable to non communicable diseases; more than a quarter of these occur in low income and
middle income countries4 5. Use of tobacco is one of the major risk factor for non communicable
disease which is slowly threatening human life5.
Tobacco smoking in any form constitutes a major risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD),
hypertension (HTN), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), oral, nasopharyngeal, bronchial
and other visceral malignancies6 . Smoking 1 4 cigarettes per day significantly increases the risk of
cardiovascular disease7. Smoking also increases the risk of thrombosis8 (8). Smokers are 3 times
more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than the non smokers. Smokeless tobacco users have a higher

Yojimbo Comparison

Final Assignment: Essay Yojimbo (1961)/ A Fistful Of Dollars (1967)
The following essay is on two films, Yojimbo (1961) directed by Akira Kurosawa A Fistful Of Dollars
(1967) directed by Sergio Leone. The film Yojimbo was plagiarized by Sergio Leone when he made A
Fistful Of Dollars and Kurosawa sued for royalties.
A Fistful Of Dollars is a 1964 spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone starring Clint
Eastwood. The film was shot on a low budget. It is part of the Dollars Trilogy A Fistful Of Dollars,
For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad The Ugly.
The premise behind A Fistful Of Dollars is a cowboy arrives at a Mexican town and immediately is
tested by 4 locals who he guns down with ease. An old innkeeper in the town explains to Clint
Eastwood The Stranger about a feud between two families in the town. The original entitled, Yojimbo

Now these two characters have similarities; their use of weaponry. Each character is a master with
their weapon of choice. Due to ethnicity variances, the original version, Yojimbo, use Swords and the
Italian version, A Fistful of Dollars use Pistols. The decision was based on not only cultural factors but
also the likelihood that it needs to appeal to its current audience, hence, American s Versus the
Japanese. One particular detail is the use of substances in their mouths. I am referring to how the
characters are consistently occupied with some form of object that they are either chewing or
smoking. Joe, from the Italian version, smokes a cigarillo in the film whereas A Ronin from Yojimbo
is constantly chewing on an object. One obvious similarity is that they are both lone cowboy/ronin s

Twyla and Roberta´s Friendship in Toni Morrison’s...
The whirlwind relationship of Twyla Roberta. Friendships tend to change over time, for better or
worse. This is illustrated in Toni Morrison s short story Recititaf. The relationships of Twyla and
Roberta are a rollercoaster from the moment they meet at the orphanage, to their confrontational
meeting at the Howard Johnsons, to the picketing during segregation, until the end when they try and
sort things out. One of the ways to show the rocky relationship of the two is through their dialog when
they discuss their mothers. The best place to start is at the beginning, at the start of the story, when the
two girls are first put into the shelter. Twyla ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When she does this, her grin cracked her whole face, and she replies fine. This shows her
unwillingness to disclose, and demonstrates her decision to refuse Twyla s desire to reignite their old
friendship, when she asks how Twyla s mother is doing she simply replies that she s doing fine, pretty
as a picture, to reflect Roberta s unwillingness to open up. On the next meeting, farther into their lives,
Roberta actually calls out to Twyla in a grocery checkout line. When they begin to talk, Roberta asks
if her Twyla s mother is sick as well, meaning that what she said last time they met isn t correct, that
she was still sick. They begin to reminisce, remembering how Roberta s mother had the cross like two
telephone poles, a much less elegant description of how Twyla originally stated earlier, realizing it
wasn t necessarily salvation for her. As the conversation continues, she asks again about her mother,
asking if she got well, which she never did, a nice way of saying she passed away. Later on, during the
picketing and everything, Twyla notices Roberta picketing with a sign larger than her mother s cross.
Insinuating that she s becoming her mother, if not more, and falling into a sickness herself that could
destroy their friendship. They begin arguing over whether or not when the bow legged servant Maggie
fell whether or not they kicked her. This spurs off into a war of words. To insult her Twyla makes a

Machiavelli And Humanism
While the moral codes of Humanism and Catholicism consider being deceitful to be wrong, from an
amoral perspective, betrayal is unavoidable and comes with its own set of benefits. This is Machiavelli
s view in his 1513 work The Prince, in which he details the complexities of gaining and maintaining
political power to his Italian statesman Lorenzo de Medici, from whom he hopes to regain a political
position after shifts in the unstable Florentine republic. Machiavelli argues that people, particularly
political leaders, should have flexible moral codes so that they can bend them when necessary. For
him, betraying allies or betraying one s own beliefs is acceptable, even beneficial, because it aids in
making tough political decisions to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite Machiavelli s tongue in cheek perspective, his intentions in writing The Prince exemplify the
two faced nature of mankind. During political upset in Florence, the ruling family betrays Machiavelli
himself by temporarily jailing him for treason, stripping him of his political position, and banishing
him. Yet unlike Dante, who is more personally affected by his exile, Machiavelli sees Medici family s
return to power as an opportunity to regain his own position, which is why he hopes to impress
Lorenzo with The Prince. For him, betrayal is more expected under the circumstances, and so he
hopes to play them at their own game. By feigning loyalty and kissing up to Lorenzo, Machiavelli
improves his chances of obtaining power, even though he likely doesn t believe everything he s
saying. For him, his true intentions or beliefs don t matter like with religion and betrayal, his
deceitfulness is a useful political tool in a world of deceitful men. With the sixteenth century
Florentine power struggle and religious tension, it was difficult for anyone to find stability. While
Machiavelli experienced treachery firsthand through being banned from Florence, many Florentines
could relate to a general lack of loyalty. During a time of political turmoil, aspiring leaders would have
to hurt people in the process of gaining

Theme Of Nature In The Scarlet Letter

Passion and Hatred
In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvellous and merciful, that the sufferer should
never know the intensity of what he endures by its present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles
after it (Hawthorne 52). As Hester Prynne, the main character, is put through hardships from her sinful
nature, she faces the rough times sin gave her and the way she endures the lives of the people closest
to her. Nathaniel Hawthorne explains how a small Puritan village gets through sin and the way it took
over their lives in The Scarlet Letter. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between
good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur
Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne was a woman who sinned against the Puritan
way, yet got through it and was able to live a life in which her daughter learned how to be civilized
and respectable. The stigma was gone, Hester heaved a long deep sigh in which the burden of shame
and anguish departed from her spirit (Hawthorne 182). Hester was going through the sin that took over
her life and as a result, she finally decided to tell her village that Dimmesdale was Pearl s father. As
she took the A off her bosom, the sin was freed. She finally felt free from what defined her life.
Raising Pearl made Hester feel as she had a purpose and was doing a good act in life. On

Conducting Interviews
Conducting interviews is fundamental as a case manager. In order to understand more about good
interviewing, I decided to watch an interview about an addict mother conducted by Dr. Phil. While
watching this interview, I made some notes on attitudes and characteristics that I considered important
for good interviewing. The characteristics will be presented in the following paragraphs. From the
start of the interview I noticed that it is important to have good communication skills and the
interviewer should speak with confidence and knowledge about the subject. As everyone knows, Dr.
Phil is known as an expert in human behavior and in his show, he conducts interviews or talks to help
people with problems. At the beginning of the interview, Dr. Phil presented himself very straight
forward and respectfully towards the out of control addict mother. ... Show more content on

Phil took control of every situation. He maintains the position and calm while asking questions. I
could immediately see that he did not share the same values or principles as the interviewee, yet he did
not act against her behavior. Instead, he asked reflective questions so that she could know she was
wrong. There were times where the interviewee was a little bit out of control and Dr. Phil calmed her
and spoke firmly about her behavior. The interviewer conveys empathy in some ways. For example,
told her I understand what you are going through and It is difficult . Those two phrases made me
realize that the interviewer feels empathy towards the interviewee. I also noticed that the interviewer
does demonstrate cultural sensitivity towards the interviewee. Cultural sensitivity is very important in
this case because it allows us to function effectively in other cultures and value other cultures while
reducing cultural barriers between the professional and patient. Dr. Phil demonstrated cultural
sensitivity because he respected the traditions of the interviewee and her daily

Workplace Harassment
An Analysis of Workplace Harassment and Bullying in Today s Society
Introduction
Workplace harassment and bullying occurs when an employee subjects another employee to degrading
behaviour, whether verbal abuse and threats or actual physical violence. It is an inappropriate
expression of power that affects workers and their productivity in an unfavourable way (Spry, 1998).
Management, and other types of employees, who occupy high status roles sometimes believe that
harassing their subordinates is within their rights and make demands of the lower status employees
(Langton, Robbins, Judge, 2010, p. 313).
Harassment is often a result of stress, power, differences of opinion, undefined expectations of
management, absent policies, and tasks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Johns amp; Saks, 2008, p. 135)
It has typically been thought of as a type of harassment that only women experience in the workplace;
however, men can be victims of sexual harassment as well. Sexual harassment demeans its victims,
whether female or male.
A victim of sexual harassment can be anyone within an organization, although some individuals are
more prone to victimization. For example, women within an organization who are highly educated,
young, and seeking to move up within the ranks of the organization can be perceived by men as a
threat and so are targeted (Mueller, De Coster, amp; Estes, 2001). The corporate culture in which
individuals work can also influence who becomes a victim of sexual harassment. Women who work in
male dominated occupations or work groups are more likely to be harassed than women who work in
female dominated or gender integrated occupations or work groups (Mueller et al., 2001). Corporate
cultures that are more open about sexual matters may become too lenient regarding this topic which
can potentially lead to increased sexual harassment cases. It has been

Essay on The Human Genome Project
Embedded deeply in our body is the complex biological story. The Human Genome Project is the
exploration of this intricate yet crucial storyline. The Genome is a complete set of genes that make up
an organism. Genes are made up of DNA (deoxynucleic acid) which subsequently is made up of long
paired strands. These paired strands attach in a specific manner, for example, Adenine (A) attaches
itself to Thymine (T) and Cytosine(C) to Guanine (G). The genome is the perplexing key in
instructing cells to do their duty. Cells interact together to create tissues. Tissues connect together to
create organs. Organs function together to produce an organism.

Scientists then take pictures of each snippet of the genome. By have a vivid illusion of the order of the

have the final copy of the fully sequenced genome. There are many other methods out there to
decipher the genome but this is the most common method of usage.this method can also be known as
the Polymerase Chain reaction (PCR). PCR is a laboratory technique that uses primers to amplify a
specific area and then copies the sequence a billion times over. Another method worth mentioning is
the combined use of Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Gel Electrophoresis.
RFLP is when restriction enzymes are used as markers which cut DNA in specific known locations.
This samples derived from RFLP are then run through the Gel Electrophoresis which can configure
these macromolecules by separating them. There is also the Yeast Artificial Chromosomes (YAC)
which is human engineered DNA molecule used to clone DNA sequences in yeast cells.Another one
similar to the YAC is the Bacterial Artificial Chromosome (BAC) which instead of the yeast cells use
bacterial cells.
The ultimate goal of the HGP is to provide an encyclopedia of detailed information of the location,
structure and function of the complete set of human genes. The HGP also loyally supports and
sponsors genome studies on other organisms

How Did Frederick Douglass Benefit From His Education
Throughout the works of Frederick Douglass there is a prominent contradiction referring to literacy.
At times, Douglass regrets his education as it makes his slavery more difficult to tolerate. Additionally,
his education opens them up to more abuse as Harriet Jacob asserts they were living in a culture of
silence (Cutter 209). Thorough examination of Frederick Douglass writing reveals various paradoxes
within his testimony regarding his literary education; while Douglass did benefit from his education in
some way, in many other ways, it shattered his spirit and lead to a lifetime of abuse.
Douglass narrative demonstrates how his literary education is both a blessing and a curse. He believed
that permitting slaves to read was a contradiction, a paradox if you will, unable to render freedom, or
provide them a legitimate education. Douglass reasoned that the education was a ploy to let African
Americans believe they were treated fairly. Douglass expresses, As I read and contemplated the
subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning
to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish (Douglass 1200).
Douglass displays the injustice and frustration of this situation; he is fully aware that he is being
treated unfairly.
For a short time, Douglass did consider his literacy a gift. This was the first opportunity that many
African Americans had to obtain an education. Having the ability to read

The Meaning Of A True Education
Synthesis Essay Rough Draft
A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful in life after
completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes, so
must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education
system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost sight
of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future by
providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on
standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life.
The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During this
time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of education.
The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the validity of these
principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed somewhat, and some
aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it is advancing in the
wrong direction. The education students receive prepare them for college; it doesn t prepare them for
any other pathway. When we went to school, we were kept there with a story which is if you worked
hard and did well and got a college degree, you would have a job (RSA). This is a common

Discussion Questions On Marcel Duchamp s Urinal Painting
Kimberly Greene Professor Whiting HUMN 2002 Art March 11, 2017 Art Assessment II Task 1:
Artist: Marcel Duchamp Title: Fountain Signed: R. Mutt Year: 1917 Task 2: Do you think this is art?
Is it art or not, why? Yes, I believe that Marcel Duchamp s urinal painting is considered art because it
served as some type of meaning or purpose to him. He was inspired in some way to paint this type of
artwork/painting. One can interpret it in more ways than one. Some may not even understand it, but
somehow Duchamp did and that is all that matters. So, therefore, this is what led to him painting such
a feature and that is why I would consider it as a piece of art. Task 3: Find information on Fountain.
Consider concepts. (Write additional notes here.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His famous painting, titled Fountain, is viewed as one of Duchamp s most famous works and is widely
seen as an icon of 20th century art. (Tate). Therefore, I believe if it changed how people viewed
Conceptual art and artwork throughout that era/time period, then it is considered as such a famous
piece of artwork. While some may not understand the point of Duchamp s painting of the urinal,
others find much needed purpose to it. If it outlined and changed such an era/time period of art, then I
would say Duchamp set a new limit on what is to be or not to be considered art. I believe art is what
comes from the inside the inner soul and what draws through because what lies within you, serves as a
meaning to not only you, but to others as well. While, some people look at a piece of art or artwork
and somehow find no meaning to it, and think, Oh, I could have done that by just dabbing or throwing
a little paint on the canvas, others find meanings to these pieces of artwork. To me, I believe that all
artwork has a meaning and serves a purpose to the artist and/or painter. While we may not understand
all of the concepts highlighted in a painting, such as this one, or in any such artwork, I believe that we
can still get something out of it, as a whole. By saying this, I believe that this is exactly what
Duchamp did and believed, that you couldn t define art, and that is why I consider Duchamp s famous
piece, Fountain, which drastically changed the views/concepts of Conceptual art period/era, a piece of

Positive Reflection On Divorce
Linda is a 36 year old newly divorced woman. Her early childhood experiences include her parents
divorce. Due to her parents divorce and the following feelings of pressure to conform and agree to
each parent, Linda has developed strong beliefs about her life, particularly her marriage. These are
expressed through Linda s dislike of divorce and her desire to keep her children happy and innocent,
Linda feels that she has failed in both cases and feels guilty and responsible for failing . However,
Linda did admit that her mother s general disapproval and opinion that Linda was to blame for the
divorce may have influenced her thoughts. Due to the sudden divorced her (ex)husband has imposed,
Linda feels very confused and alone, and she has furthered that by sending her children away and not
clearing things with her husband. Linda also does not know how to move forward in her life, and is
hesitant to do anything if it may affect her children. As a result, Linda is very confused and mildly
frustrated with the situation. Linda recognises that her memories and previous feelings about parents
divorce may also be effecting her thoughts and feelings currently.
In reviewing my practice, I can see that I used several skills very well, in particular the use of
empathetic silences and positive reflection.
An example of the positive reflection is when the client described how her mother was less supportive
and blamed the client for the divorce, in response I said:
On the other hand, at least, your father, it sounds like he was very positive and supportive of you, like
her would be there for you...? (17:58). Linda response was Yeah, he was pretty great, and we just
talked about the future, and what I was going to do with my kids . Later in the practice (7:08) after the
client expressed feelings of helplessness, I asked her As you said, you ve been through something
similar, did you pick up an activities that helped? in response she talked about drawing and about her
friends being supportive. I used empathetic silences regularly throughout the practice, especially in the
beginning of the video from 00:41 3:33 where I allowed the client to talk introduce her original reason
for coming, and again at 10:00 to 10:50,

Selfishness in Wuthering Heights
Through self centered and narcissistic characters, Emily Bronte s classic novel, Wuthering Heights
illustrates a deliberate and poetic understanding of what greed is. Encouraged by love, fear, and
revenge, Catherine Earnshaw, Heathcliff, and Linton Heathcliff all commit a sin called selfishness.
Catherine Earnshaw appears to be a woman who is free spirited. However, Catherine is also quite self
centered. She clearly states that her love for Edgar Linton does not match how much she loves
Heathcliff. She is saying that she does love both, and she is unwilling to give one up for the other; she
wants Heathcliff for her friend . Catherine admits that her love for Linton is like the foliage in the

Unfortunately for Heathcliff, the love that is his life suddenly died, causing more anguish and wrath to

a self centered human being, and desires Catherine to be with him even after death. Edgar on the other
hand didn t beg for Catherine to haunt him, for he was looking forward to their time together in the
afterlife. This proves Heathcliff s selfishness to needing Catherine with him, and also confirms the fact
that Edgar is the one that would unconditionally love Catherine forever. Heathcliff selfishly only
wanted Catherine for himself, he visited Catherine s coffin and removed the blond lock of hair which
belongs to Edgar and threw it to the floor, then taking his own and placing it in. Another one of the
many things Heathcliff wanted was power. He seduced and married Isabella Linton, not out of love,
but out of selfish thoughts of abusing her to get revenge against her brother, Edgar because he married
Heathcliff s lover. When Isabella died, Heathcliff s son Linton was handed over to him; Heathcliff
forced Linton to marry Edgar and Catherine s daughter, Catherine or Cathy Linton. When Ellen found

Goodbye Columbus Essay
Sometimes there are two novels that have the same theme, and sometimes they have the same plot, but
in the case of the two novels, The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the novel Goodbye
Columbus, by Philip Roth they explore the same dynamics of the chase of the American dream. In
both novels there are similar themes, they both use the idea of sex and money as a form of power.
Both novels can relate to each other because the authors decided to show how the pursuit of the
American dream may not always be a good thing, and how sex and money can cause problems in that
pursuit. Overall in both of the novels the reoccurring theme of sex, money and the search for the
American dream is present and in both novels the authors show that ... Show more content on

Brenda also represents sex to Neil therefore she represents two of the major themes of the novel, sex
and money. To Neil there are many differences in the Patimkin family that make them very different
from his own. They are able to eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen. They have a maid that
makes the meals and cleans up after them. They also have a refrigerator full of fruit that is always full.
This is all the ideal life for Neil, and when you put Brenda in the mix you have Neil s perfect world. If
he could become part of the Patimkin family he would have sex, money and in essence the American
dream. Those three ideas are also present in the novel The Great Gatsby. In this novel the two worlds
are divided by old and new money, instead of the idea of assimilation to society after immigration. In
this novel, where you live determines your wealth, just as it did in the novel Goodbye Columbus. In
The Great Gatsby the idea of wealth representing power is the most prevalent aspect of the novel. The
title character Jay Gatsby, is wealthy and he lives in the new money side of town. The love of his life
is Daisy Buchannan, and she lives on the old money side of town. Their love is similar to that of Neil

My Lai Massacre Summary
The explanation of why upright people execute wrongful actions is interpreted in multiple ways. In
The My Lai Massacre: A Military Crime of Obedience, Herbert C. Kelman, a professor of social
ethics, and V. Lee Hamilton, a sociologist, discuss how the practice of authorization, routinization, and
dehumanization are employed to carry out unethical actions similar to the My Lai Massacre. The
American Law assumes that subordinates should be obeying orders; however, when linked to obeying
superiors, moral principles become inoperative. Erich Fromm, a psychoanalyst, and the author of
Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem, explains how the different types of mindset and
authorities can be noticeably effective in whether one is obedient. ... Show more content on

As US military expert Rod Powers explains how those who are military members who fail to obey
their superiors risk serious consequences in Military Orders , and could relate to why Dawson and
Downey were convicted for their crimes (Power). Required to follow orders, a soldier does not need to
obey an unlawful order, but those who obey can be pinned with criminal prosecution and in this case,
it matches with Dawson and Downey s situation where they taped and tied up Santiago (Power).
Fromm can conclude that irrational authority is used by using a comparison between a slave and their
master; the superior wants the best they can draw from their subordinate and tries to exploit them,
leading them to control with force (Fromm 126). When it comes to deciding whether or not an order is
ethical, it is also the soldier s call to believe the legitimacy of the order; according to Saul McLeod,
who is a psychologist and the author of Obedience to Authority, obedience is a form of social
influence by responding to a direct order from another individual (McLeod). Although Col. Jessup
urged for no one to touch Santiago, Kendricks directly ordered Dawson and Downey to treat him with
a Code Red, going against Col. Jessup s orders. Numerous situations occur where two people will
discuss the same topic, but would contradict each other. It is easy to say I was only following orders to
justify one s self to explain their reasoning, but that statement, also known as the Nuremberg Defense,
is not going to save a person every time. Yes, Dawson and Downey were only following orders, but
did they ever take a moment to question whether it was the right action and for a sensible reason?
Probably not in consideration that it is a routine to follow a command because if they deny their
superior s order, many consequences will follow. Kelman and Hamilton logically claimed that

Funeral Planning
Funeral Planning
Introduction
Mankind s history of burial practices and funeral customs are as old as civilization itself. There is no
specific way to planning a funeral. Every civilization and culture has provided for their dead in
different ways. Religion and personal beliefs play an important role in the burial practices and funeral
customs of a given culture or civilization. Furthermore, each civilization and cultured ever studied
have three things in common: some type of funeral rites, rituals, and ceremonies; A sacred place for
the dead; and memorialization of the dead. As far back as the time of Christ, burials have been noted
to take place. In time burial and funeral customs have become very distinct, interesting and ... Show

The Greeks often buried dead people, and marked graves with carved gravestones. Large pots were
also used to mark graves. The deceased were usually buried in graveyards outside the city walls.
When the procession reached the burial place, the body could be buried, or it could be burnt, and the
ashes were buried. The dead person was often buried with some of their belongings.
Patterns of Death
Today it is probable that you will die in a hospital, hospice care facility, or nursing home, aside from
death on impact, such as in accidents. In the past, confronting death was common. As societies
advanced and learned more about health and medicine, death became less of an everyday experience.
In Modern day America death has become somewhat unnatural. Removal of everyday experience has
separated our society from death. In Pastoral/Horticultural societies the elderly where considered the
most respected, wise, and usually attain much of the wealth. In post industrial societies, like the U.S.
for instance, dying is not a part of everyday life. Thought people die everyday, today it is most likely
that many individuals haven t experienced someone dying. When the ill or accident victims die,
hospital house the deceased s bodies away from sight, in the basement to of a hospital, usually referred
to as the morgue.
Planning My Funeral My assignment consisted of visiting a Funeral Home to begin the process of
preparing my funeral.

Scout As A Role Model In To Kill A Mockingbird
Scout changes many times, but her presentation of herself remains the same. At the beginning of the
novel, Scout sees herself as gamine as she plays with her brother and never had a female figure to be a
role model. By the end of the novel, she receives a taste of the outside world and what goes on beyond
her house. With Tom Robinson and the court case, all the way to Boo Radley the monster, Scout sees
and lives everything. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout displays herself as obstinate,
inquisitive, and gamine. One way scout displays herself is obstinate. For example, at the beginning of
the book, Scout s teachers tell her she is not allowed to read at home anymore with her dad. Scout is
very upset when she is told that. That day when she runs home, she tries to convince her father,
Atticus, to let her not go to school because she wants to continue reading with him every night.
Another example where Scout is obstinate in the novel is when Jem, Scout s brother, Dill, Scout s
friend, and Scout go down to the courthouse to spy on Atticus and find him confronting a mob of men.
When Scout runs to see Atticus, Jem and Dill are forced to follow. Scout then sees a man she knows,
Mr. Cunningham, she tries many times to get his attention but he does not respond. Hey, Mr.
Cunningham... Hey, Mr. Cunningham. How s your entailment gettin along?... Don t you remember
me, Mr. Cunningham? I m Jean Louise Finch.... I go to school with Walter Scout never gives up on
trying to get Mr. Cunningham to respond until finally he does, saying, I ll tell him you say hey, little
lady, (154) Scout s portraying being obstinate on not letting it go when she tries to get his attention.
Even when Mr. Cunningham continues to ignore her, she is very stubborn about getting his attention
to say hi. As Scout begins to see what is outside of her home, she becomes an inquisitive person. For
example, Scout sits with Atticus every night and reads the daily newspaper, unlike most other kids her
age. Scout loves reading, that is why she never wanted to stop even when her teacher told her she had
to. She learns new things every night, even if she might not understand them at the moment, she will
learn more in the future. She was very

Winter Dreams And The Garden Party
Winter Dreams and The Garden Party I have chosen two short stories the first one being F. Scott
Fitzgerald s Winter Dreams and the second one being Katherine Mansfield s The Garden Party. Winter
Dreams was written in and published in 1922, and so was The Garden Party . Winter Dreams takes
place during the winter months and we find the main character Dexter Green skiing on the golf course
that he is a caddie for during the golf season. During the offseason, Dexter s imagination becomes
more and more powerful. He thinks of himself as one of the best golfers and he imagines himself
beating some of the more esteemed members of the golf course. When the spring comes, Dexter runs

As the story goes, the book travels back in time to when Dex was twenty three and when he was
granted a weekend pass back to his old stomping grounds by one of the prominent figures he used to
caddy for. There he runs into Judy and then while waiting to go on a date, he realizes just how much
of a difference there is between their social classes. Dexter realizes he will never be able to marry her
and eventually becomes engaged, but that falls apart, and by age thirty two Dexter becomes more
successful than ever before. A business associate of his notifies him that his love Judy has since
married and was in a disaster of a relationship. The Garden Party takes place in early in the 20th
century at the estate of a wealthy family in New Zealand. It was interesting story in the way that it
portrayed the upper class in a not so fashionable way. In the story, Laura s family is throwing a huge
garden party. However, next door there is a family who is not so well off and they just lost the family
patriarch in a tragic carriage accident, and yet her family insists on having the party delayed to pay
respects to the next door neighbors. However, her self centered family members refuse to, saying there
is no need to cancel their party. Her sister goes on to even say when referring to the man who died,
You won t bring a drunk workman back to life by being sentimental. (Mansfield, 123) That just

Over the course of approximately 4 weeks, the discussion section I was a part of created a political
party that would be our entry into the POLS 150 government simulation. Our party had a moderate
ideology, which we believed would be best in order to give everyone comfort with things we did. This
ended up being the what nearly all of the other parties did with the exception of one or two who chose
to be center left. We agreed upon votes being SMD with proportional representation as it seemed like
the best option. We had a president and a prime minister along with a parliament. The president had a

with 3 year terms, a presidential federal system, a free market, no discrimination, universal healthcare
with a parallel private system, and an EPA. All of these were in some way positions we held in our
own constitution, and many of the other parties reflected these same principles. So again I say, our

Oppositional Difiance Disorder in Our Students Essay
Many times in a classroom we as teachers come across students who seem to always be defiant, who
seem to do things purposely to bother others, or seem to always blame others for his or her mistakes.
Well those students may be showing sings of Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ODD. Oppositional
defiant disorders along with conduct disorders are seen to be frequent psychiatric disorders among
children. (Matthys, Vanderschuren, Schutterm Lochman, 2012, 235) Between 5 and 15 percent of
school aged children have oppositional defiant disorder. It seems to be more common in boys then
girls. It is also seen to me more common in urban than in rural areas. (Childrens Mental Health

Not only will they have issues learning in a social classroom environment but they also have a hard
time making and keeping friends. As children who have ODD tend to strive on annoying people they
often cannot keep friends. Many of their classmates do not want to be friends with them as they are
constantly bothering them, blaming them for their own mistakes, and tend to act aggressively towards
them. (Kids Mental Health , 2009) Another challenge students with ODD face in school would be that
they have a hard time following rules, losing their temper, and cursing. When trying to learn in a
classroom those are three things that need to be followed. Usually when a student does not comply
with the rules, loses their temper, or curses in class they are asked to leave or they get in trouble. A
student who spends most of his or her time doing those things would lose a lot of learning time and
their for falling behind on their learning. (Salend, Sylvestre, 2005, 32)
As it can be seen by the characteristics of oppositional defiant disorder it can be very difficult to teach
students who have ODD. As it takes at least six months of observation before diagnosing ODD, it is
important that teachers have strategies to work with students who have ODD. There are many
strategies that a teacher can use in the classroom to help. Many of the strategies can be use as whole
class learning, and many of them can be integrated seamlessly into their

Homework has been a part of every student s life since 1905 and recently has become a topic that
people can not come to an agreement on. Students, teachers, and parents continually go back and forth
everyday regarding the type of and amount of homework students receive. Although some people

in Rahtke). Teachers and people who are pro homework would argue that this is the main reason
students are assigned homework. Homework is continuously used by schools because of the potential
benefits it can offer students. Most of the time when people talk about benefits of homework they talk
about academic benefits, however there is also nonacademic benefits. When students are given
homework students must take it upon themselves to make sure they complete it. Through this they
learn an important tool that is necessary in life, time management. Cooper emphasizes that homework
can also lead to students improving their self direction, self discipline, and self organization. When
students take it upon themselves to get their work done they improve their independent problem
solving skills, which can help them both in school settings and out in the world. Homework helps
build students characters as well as improve their academic skills. Homework might appear to be
beneficial when studies show students who do homework do better academically, however, there is a
point at which homework has a negative effect on students. The purpose of homework is to reinforce
the learning that takes place in school or prepare children for forthcoming lessons, which in theory,
sounds ideal. But, research on homework has indicated otherwise. Apparently, too much is detrimental
to children (Rajoo). The excessive homework that kids are being assigned is not helping

The plague was a widespread epidemic that spread across Asia then to Europe in the fourteenth

they themselves have been victimized, it is first necessary to define who the minors are (Countryman

overlapping classification of a minor by only 1 year, some believing that it defines an individual

a type of violence (including verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse) against children and youth

their interactive television services, satellite internet access, satellite television and audio

subscribers, it is faced with a myriad of competition from rival firms that offer the same services. The
firms that rival Dish Corporation include Comcast Corporation, Time Warner Cable Enterprise and
Directv Group holdings. As of the year 2016, Dish Corporation has had more than 13 million

Dish has adopted over the years to remain in business and at the same time gain competitive
advantage. The first key strategy that Dish Corporation has adopted in its quest to gain competitive
advantage over its competitors is putting more emphasis on customer focus. Customer focus in the
latter perspective represents boosting services such as customer care. In the recent years, the firm has

Barriers to Effective Communication
Even though an individual s backgrounds and beliefs can affect the process of communication, one
must utilize the different processes and components to achieve effective communication. Because
barriers block the listening process causing misunderstanding that may block the flow of information
between individuals. Therefore, this misunderstanding may blur the lines of communication utilized
within the criminal justice system.
The basic concept of communication is interaction between two or more people that results in the

information he or she would need to understand the fullness of the situation by giving feedback. This
feedback allows the sender transmit further information so that those on the other end of the radio will

steps became known as the basis of communication. Because the information goes through a process
that requires the information to transmit through a route that allows both the sender and the receiver to
process information until they decode the entire conversation. However, no matter how well a
communication process works the people involved will always have barriers that can block the

Martin Luther King Jr Day Analysis
It is interesting when we think about Martin Luther King Jr. Day. About the man behind the holiday.
He embodied values of service, courage, compassion, dignity, and humility during his time as leader
of the Civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. in his life and in his depiction in the movie
Selma shows a man that believed that implementation of public policy should not be decided by those
in power when they felt like administering it, but to force the hand of policymakers who did not
permit the rights of all Americans equally through a unified voice of the people by the people. Martin
Luther King Jr. was a very intellectual man who had a beautiful mind and heart when it came to the
knowledge of what he was doing and how he did it. His leadership came from a fire that bred in him
believing that what was going on was wrong. But he also looked to his Christian faith to guide him in
his decisions and actions. Just like how Mahatma Gandhi had done years before through his Hindu
faith to help India gain independence from Great Britain. Martin Luther King had the intelligence also

Defining Psychological Disorders
Defining psychological disorders. Psychological disorders are behavior patterns that lead to inability
to function properly in life. There are quite a number of mental disorders but I will only focus on
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder because it is the most studied mental disorder and the most
frequently diagnosed disorder especially in children. This disorder causes inability to pay attention,
difficulty in controlling one s behaviors or causes one to be excessively active. A lot of misleading
information about this disorder is everywhere in the communities and even the society. Some do not
even believe it is real and therefore it is important to understand what this disorder is. Patients with
these disorders will mostly act without thinking and therefore impacting on their families and loved
ones. The actual cause of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders is not known but other factors may
be a trigger. These factors may include genetics, the society and the environment (Joel 2006). Some
medical conditions and previous brain infections or cases of trauma. It normally runs in families, with
factors such as exposure to alcohol, toxic chemicals or at times premature birth may lead to the
disorder. Diagnosis is done by a set of criteria but begins by assessing the behaviors of a person in
childhood, and their mental development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Functions Of A Joint And Articular Cartilage
Osteochondritis Dissecans
Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), happens when a piece of tissue that covers a joint (articular
cartilage) is separated from the bone. Articular cartilage protects the bones and allows joints to move
smoothly, without pain.
OCD most commonly affects the knee joint, but it can also occur at the ankle, elbow, or other joints
throughout the body. OCD occurs mainly in children and adolescents. Mild cases of OCD tend to heal
over time, especially if a child has this condition. However, severe cases may require surgery to
reattach the articular cartilage to the surrounding bone.
CAUSES
The cause of this condition is not known. Possible causes include:
Injury from repetitive motion or repetitive stress on the joint.
Inadequate blood supply to the joint.
Having certain genes that make developing OCD more likely (genetic predisposition).
RISK FACTORS
The following factors may make you more likely to develop this condition:
Being a child or adolescent. Having bones that are still growing makes OCD more likely to occur.
Participating in sports that put repeated force on the joints, such as distance running.
Being obese.
Having a family history of OCD.
Having posture problems, such as bow legs or knock knees.
SYMPTOMS
In many cases, there are no symptoms of this condition. However, symptoms vary depending on the
severity and location of the condition. Possible symptoms include:

Lucretius Book 3 Essay
The chart above shows how Lucretius arranged his poem to combat his two main targets: the fear of
death the fear of the gods. In Books 1 2, Lucretius expounds upon his atomic theory of indestructible
particles, which cause an everlasting cycle of combination and separation, creation and destruction,
and birth and death. Everything in the universe is composed of these particles, thus everything is
mortal. Book 3 is dependent on the two previous books as it brings the ethical implication to the fore
by discussing the nature of the soul and its mortality. The culmination of Book 3 therefore death is
nothing to us makes explicit the crux of atomic theory set out in Books 1 3 showing that death is not to
be feared nor is there life after death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Book 4 begins with a large passage borrowed from Book 1 (1.926 50 = 4.1 25). The repetition of the
passage in the beginning of Book 4 forces the reader to reflect on the previous three books and
reminds the reader of the author s purpose and methodology, namely the use of science and poetry.
Lines 4.26 32 review what has preceded, but since I have taught... , and then lines 4.33 45 introduce
what topics will come next, now I will begin to undertake... . In the final three books, Lucretius takes
on his next task to free man from superstition, namely the belief that the gods influence the world or
that man influences the gods. The whole poem could be viewed as supporting this view as Lucretius in
Books 1 2 is explaining this atomic system in order to show that the world is composed in entirely
materialistic terms, lacking the need of divine intervention. This is made explicitly clear in the first
book: nothing comes from nothing by divine influence

The History And Transitions Of Music
The history and transitions of music has had many talented persons that have influenced music but
none are so well known as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van
Beethoven. All three of these great composers performed during the Classic period and it would act as
the base of classic music for the next one hundred and fifty, to two hundred years. The names of
Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are so well known that people who have little to no knowledge of
music will recognize their names. The urban communities of Austria and Germany would find the
settings from 1750 1820 that would become known as the classical period. The Classic period had
many developments such as the sonata, symphony and string quartet along with a growth of opera
houses and concert halls were abundant during the classical period. The Golden Age will later refer to
this time of classical music. The works of Franz Joseph Hayden, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and
Ludwig van Beethoven will be everlasting in the world of classical music. There are many opinions of
the three big composers that do not include Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, furthermore everyone is
entitled to their own opinion.
Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Austria March 31st 1732 and died May 31st 1809 at age seventy
seven. Haydn s parents who neither one could read music but his father had been a folk musician had
noticed his son had a musical talent. They arranged for him to start apprenticing to Johann Mathis

In J.D. Salinger’s “Nine Stories”, there are two stories...
In J.D. Salinger s Nine Stories , there are two stories that indicate a death, and, remarkably, these two
short stories are what begin and end this captivating piece of literature. The first story is called A
Perfect Day for Bananafish and introduces a man who has been through the hell of World War II,
which allows him to see things from a different perspective. The latter is called Teddy and revolves
around a young, ingenious boy that seems to have a speculative mindset and very deep insight into
life. In both stories the reader is introduced to a genius , but the geniuses, with all the potentials at
hand, end up going mad and killing themselves. However, this proves to be Salinger s point. It
demonstrates a fine line that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Seymour takes his own life, we backtrack to his story and he is then seen as a celestial figure,
ahead of his time and full of wisdom. Metaphorically speaking, the bananafish ideology depicts
humanity in the postwar boom generation, where riches surround all people. However, amidst all the
possessions, we cannot help ourselves and we continuously and relentlessly consume, regardless of
what may happen as a result. We are each trapped in our own banana filled hole, in which Seymour
ultimately escapes from through his death.
In the final short story Teddy , the main character is a ten year old boy who is as intuitive and
intelligent as any character gets in this novel, with the exception of Seymour of course. Like Seymour
Glass, Teddy sees the world differently than his peers. The two tend to focus their a lot of their
attention on small details, such as orange peels, the colour of bathing suits, a woman that seemingly
looks at Seymour s feet, and appear to mirror a larger scale vision of humanity. Teddy s orange peels
recall Seymour s bananafish. Both their objects, in Seymour s case an imaginary one, are somewhat
allegorical in a sense that they seem to suggest a philosophical portrayal of humanity. To clarify,
Teddy first notices the orange peels floating and finds them interesting. The remnants of what was
once a living fruit, now floating, lifeless on the dark water. Later on he notes that, if he had not seen
the orange peels, he would

Changes That Affect the Economic Environment in Business
Introduction
For this task I shall explain the changes in the economic environment on the business. This may
include changes within the following,
Business cycle
Inflation
Unemployment
International trade
The business that that I will be looking at is Whitbread who own Premier Inn and Costa coffee. I will
be explaining within this task how the above may affect Whitbread and its two companies Costa and
Premier inn whether it is for the better or worse.
Business cycle
When looking at a graph of a business cycle we can expect to see increases and falls in production,
income and expenditure of a company over time. The economy of the U.K, moves from boom to
recession over time and these changes within the economy have major ... Show more content on

This will also affect trade as If the UK has higher inflation than competitor countries (which it isn t
now, but it has been for a lot of the last few decades) then UK prices gradually rise above imported
prices. More imports are bought, so demand leaks out of the country and leaves UK businesses in a
weak position such as Premier inn and Costa Coffee so overall inflation is not a good thing if it does
occur and will have a negative effect on Whitbread s businesses.
Unemployment
High unemployment rates especially within the countries that Whitbread operate their businesses,
Costs and Premier inn can have a great effect on business operations as high unemployment will mean
that more people will be relying on benefits for survival and as a result will be spending less, this
would in turn affect businesses such as Premier inn and costa coffee as no one will be using their
products and services which will then effect profits which would mean that they would have to halt
growth and cut staff which are all negative factors as a result. This means when Whitbread are
planning on expanding within different countries they will carefully have to look at these factors.
Since consumers have lower confidence in the strength of the economy and less to spend, demand for
products and services drops, and

The Major Differences in the Colonization of North and South America between the French, Spanish
and English and Subsequent Civil Rights. Even in the twenty first century North America, the United
States and Canada in particular, is viewed as a bountiful land with rich resources and numerous civil
liberties that have inspired different ethnic groups from across the globe to flock to this continent in
hopes of a better life. Now everyone is well aware of all the bloodshed and human indecencies in the

The initial colonies were very unified both religiously and politically. There was little variance and a
strong sense of identity.
The continued influx of colonizers would fall to a trickle of only a hundred or so per year after the
English Civil War in 1642 and remain subdued until the American Revolution (Reader s Companion
to American History). The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more
diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer
period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying
degree of reasons. In addition, rather than being composed of immigrants from one primary area in
England, the English colonists were more geographically diverse as well.
The English had limited dealings with the Natives of the areas they colonized, preferring to operate
their colonies as autonomously as possible, depending more on interaction with the respective mother
countries than with the Native Americans (Foner and Garraty). England would become, arguably, the
most successful of the northern European countries that colonized, eventually extending their range all
the way into the interior of the new continent (Foner and Garraty).
Although the northern Europeans were not necessarily interested in exploiting the labor of the Native
Americans, they were interested in their

Italian American Attitudes Towards Speech Summary
Italian American attitudes towards speech not only is representative of their family orientated culture,
but also for the role oral traditions as a medium for providing younger generations the necessary
values and beliefs to thrive in what otherwise was a foreign society with different ideologies.
Throughout Mount Allegro, Mangione repeatedly talks about the idea of second generation Italian
immigrants being able to speak the parent s language, or mother tongue, Italian (Mangione 20 and 49
50). His mother, who reinforced the rule of only speaking Italian in the household, emphasizes the
importance of being able to communicate in a language shared by everyone in the household: I don t

Italian American attitudes towards speech are often taught through descent, by lessons told from older
generations. One such lesson is the idea of never telling others about one s own problems or family
problems. Particularly relevant in Mangione s anecdote about Comare Alfreda and Compare Calogero,
in which Comare Alfreda discusses Compare Calogero s philandering to Jerre s mother (Mangione
168). As discussion of Compare Calogero s philandering to others could result in others, especially
women, paying more attention to Compare Calogero, this could have resulted in Comare Alfreda s
problems from coming true, emphasizing the sense of vulnerability when one reveals too much
information. This particularly becomes relevant, as Mangione states that eventually the details of the
story soon got around to [his] relatives (Mangione 180). In addition to keeping quiet about one s own
problems, the idea of omereta, the oath of silence, is also a practice passed down through descent, due
to the older generation s lack of faith in the law (Mangione

Environmental problems.
Soil erosion.
In Forests and the end of second millennium in forests in a full world (2001) George M. Woodwell
points out that the most successful civilizations have decayed as forests where destroyed and replaced
with scrublands. The scrublands were further impoverished by intensive grazing and erosion until the
underlying rocks emerged and became the land scape. He goes further giving an example of the
ancient Syria, Persia, throughout the Levant, and the Mediterranean basin, also the decline of the state
known as Greece today was as a result of loss of forests and the impoverishment of the landscape. The
same process happened with respect to Carthage in North Africa.
We also have contemporary examples of land degradation from Haiti and Madagascar, now over
populated and deforested and degraded to the point where their land scape are dysfunctional,
incapable of supporting organized society. The rivers no longer flow in established channels, water
from storms in mountains appears as floods in low lands and carries silt to fill harbors and destroy the
coastal fisheries, so to restore all these problems, there is need to reforest and stabilize the uplands to
regain control of water flows and water quality and to re establish a potentially

Methods Of Data Collection
Methods of Data Collection Obtaining fake news data sets can be very challenging due to three
reasons. First, deciding whether a news post on social media is fake news or not is highly subjective.
Second, Fake news stories and fraudulent accounts are routinely taken down by Social Media
platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which makes it hard to get historical data about fake news posts.
So, we have used a data set compiled by buzzfeed, where more than 2000 facebook posts were
analyzed and labeled based on their truthfulness. To prepare this dataset, BuzzFeed News selected
three large hyperpartisan Facebook pages each from the right and from the left, as well as three large
mainstream political news pages. All nine pages have earned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There were 1,145 posts from mainstream pages, 666 from hyperpartisan right wing pages, and 471
from hyper partisan left wing pages. The difference in the number of posts for each group is a result of
them publishing with different frequencies. Data Collection with Facebook API The best way to
access, collect and store data from social media platforms is generally through Application
Programming Interfaces (APIs) [Lomborg and Bechmann 2014]. APIs are easy to use interfaces that
are usually accompanied by documentation that+ describes how to request the data that one is
interested in. They are designed to be accessed by other applications as opposed to web interfaces
which are designed for people; APIs provide a set of well defined methods that an application can
invoke to request data. For instance, in a social media platform, one may want to retrieve all data
posted by a specific user or all the posts containing a certain keyword. Facebook provides a
documented API9 with a set of software development kits (SDKs) for multiple programming
languages and platforms that make it easy to develop applications with its data. Similar to Twitter API,
Facebook also requires registering an application10 to generate the keys needed to access the API. In
contrast to Twitter, most of the content posted by Facebook users is private and therefore there is no
access to specific content posted, unless the users are friends with the authenticated account.

Economics and the Problem of Utility Maximization
Within the field of economics, the utility maximization problem represents an attempt to quantify the
rationale used when consumers attempt to maximize the satisfaction, or utility, they derive from the
purchase of goods. With the typical predetermined budgetary restriction imposed on the process,
consumers must balance their own limited funds against their desire to obtain certain items. This
means that the eventual level of utility received from all potential affordable packages, and thus the
consumer s optimal choices, can be expressed via the equation x(p, w), where p is equal to a good s
price and w is equal to the consumer s wealth. The price of any given product must be considered
during any attempt to answer the utility maximization problem, because if , then u must be continuous
and no goods can be obtained free of charge (McEachern, 2010). In other words, because the two rules
dictating the boundaries of utility maximization within a two good model clearly state that the
marginal utilities per dollar must be equal and the consumer s entire budget must be exhausted, the
inclusion of goods which can be obtained free of charge skews any conclusions regarding the
consumer s eventual utility. A good which costs nothing will always provide more immediate
happiness than one which costs money, and this fact prohibits economists from effectively modeling
any two good comparisons between free and for cost items. As is typically the case for economics,
however, simple

Hedges argument that the most essential skill... is artifice can be true to an extent; however, there are
other skills that are also essential in both political theater and consumer culture. These days, the first
person many people think about after hearing the word politics is the current president of the United
States of America, Donald Trump. People immediately think of him due to the fact that the 2016
presidential election was one of the most controversial elections in the past few decades. Many people
either love and support Donald Trump or they hate and despise him. People could have such negative
feelings toward him due to the fact that he has been caught stretching the truth and contradicting his
own statements from the past

Liberal Humanistic Critique of Gladiator Essay
Ridley Scott s epic film, Gladiator, won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 2000. Scott s
film, details the fall and rise of the great Roman General, Maximus Decimus Meridius. The Roman
Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, tells Maximus that he wishes that he become his successor, instead of his
son, Commodus. Angry, Commodus, murders his own father, thus becoming the emperor, and
sentences Maximus and his family to death. He escapes, but the Emperor s men murder his family and
burn his home. Slave traders, then capture him, and sell him into slavery. Maximus swears revenge,

His fall and rise, shows exactly what he believes, and reveals his quest for freedom. Throughout the
film, Maximus wants nothing but revenge for his family and his eventual freedom. The film contians
this theme within the scenes themselves, making background information unneeded.
Scott s film presents the overall purpose of he enhancement of life. Maximus, plays the role of the
hero, who rises, and takes his revenge. Although Maximus kills many people, he does so righteously,
trying desperately to avenge his murdered family, and gain his freedom again. Not once does maximus
kill innocent people, or take the lives of those who did him no wrong. He only wants vengeance, on
those who betrayed and wronged him; those who made him a slave, and murdered his family. At one
point, Maximus screams to the crowd, are you not entertained, mocking their vile cheering, and death
chants. The people however do not take notice of his mocking tone, only cheering louder. Maximus
never betrays his fellow soldiers, or harms innocent people. He only kills the people who block him
from his freedom and revenge. Maximus bravery and valor, give his men the courage to fight and die,
protecting their beliefs and freedoms. Maximus bravery also gives the Roman people courage,
allowing them to oppose the corrupt Emperor, Commodus. When Maximus reveals himself, and
swears his revenge, the roman people who honor and respect him, are struck with courage.

The Camps
It is truly important to remember what had occurred in labor camps from 1933 to 1939. In Nazi
Germany, concentration camps were where people were sent to work. Jews and other groups of people
such as gypsies were sent to these camps. If someone was unable to work, they would be killed. The
camps in Nazi Germany were cruel, and inhumane because people who were unable to work were
killed, many caught deadly diseases, people were marked with wrong symbol, got experimented on,
and people were sent to terrible housing.
During the Holocaust typhus was easily spread. Typhus is spread by fleas, ticks, mites, lice and when
they bite an infected person and then bite a healthy one. ( What Is Typhus ) The article ... Show more

  • 2. Jealousy in Villains of Different Works Jealousy, it is what gets the best and, of course, the worst of people. Iago in Shakespeare s play Othello is one of the worst villains out there. Other villains, such as Scar in Disney s The Lion King , Jafar in Disney s Aladdin , and Mother Gothel from Disney s Tangled have closely related motives and jealous personalities. All four betray and kill for reasons they believe are going to further the lives they intend to lead after their master plans. The stem of the jealousy roots from never having enough power and feeling inferior. Iago s jealousy rises mainly from a his boss, Othello, picking Cassio to be his right hand man. Meanwhile some of Scar s henchmen cause a stampede that is intended to kill Simba and his father Mufasa. Although Simba survives the stampede, his uncle Scar still tried to kill him. Mother Gothel goes back on her word because she steals a child from a kingdom and makes it her own to gain her youth from Rapunzel s hair. Gothel never tells Rapunzel about her life back in town as the daughter of the king and queen. She feeds Rapunzel lies to get her to live with her. She does not want Rapunzel to live out her dreams and leave her because without Rapunzel s magic hair she has no way of turning young again. In Aladdin, Jafar is trying to retrieve a magic lamp so, he seeks help from a young boy. The young boy named Aladdin and, he has to venture down into The Cave of Wonders . • 3. What Do Theories of Face Perception Tell Us About Object... What do theories of face perception tell us about object perception in general? Introduction Face perception is the process by which the brain and mind understand and interpret the human face. The cognitive and neural processes in face recognition differ greatly from those observed for object recognition. Both objects and faces are generally considered to be viewpoint dependent meaning that performance in recognition is better when viewed from a familiar viewpoint. However when considering Biederman s (1987) recognition by components theory he found that objects can be recognised equally as easily from all viewpoints. This is due to his belief that objects are recognised from the individual basic shapes that make the whole object; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Similar to effects noted in patients with Agnosia, to be further discussed.) However Tarr and BĂźlthoff (1995) found that when giving participants novel objects to recognise and extensive practice at viewing the objects from a specified viewpoint that performance in object recognition was better from familiar viewpoints than unfamiliar ones, which does not support Biedermans viewpoint invariant theory. This result demonstrates viewpoint dependent where by object recognition is slower and less accurate when viewed from different perspectives, this can be compared to the importance of the inversion effect in face recognition where by faces are less accurately recognised when viewed upside down. This also requires us to identify the importance of expertise for both object recognition and face recognition. Yin (1969) stated that individuals have a greater expertise at individuating faces. The expertise hypothesis proposes that special visual processing for faces is due to humans having expertise at individuating faces. Evidently humans are surrounded by faces from an early age and there is some evidence suggesting that from birth, babies have a mechanism which facilitates holistic processing of faces faster and more accurately (Nelson, 2001). So, just as recognition of snakes and dangerous animals is innately hard wired to generate a fear response, the same hard wired responses to faces may also be innate in order to ... Further review on several journal articles has led to an overview background of Fayol s working life which provided the foundation that conceptualized his theory. According to Wren (2001), Fayol was appointed as the Director in a mining company, Decazeville, where he succeeded to turnaround the company to become profitable. Fayol was the first person to classify the functions of a manager s job. These human resources will be managed by managers as depicted by Fayol (1949; as cited in Wren, 2001). Employees with specific area of expertise will be tasked to act on the set goals and plans. For example, Autodesk managers and human resource staff will profile potential candidates on their skill sets and job scope. Companies go across borders in search of new market opportunities and in turn, have to focus on increased productivity as competition intensifies. Organization structure and job design are carefully selected by managers to ensure that work are coordinated well with less hurdles to achieve the established goals in the planning process (Wren, 2001). In the Autodesk s Sales department, the structure is similar to a family tree where the Sales Managers coordinates the works of the Resellers and report to the Sales Director who is in charge of the department. According to Mintzberg (1980, as cited in Bartol et al, 2011), Fayol s leading function for managerial work is categorized under the interpersonal role of any managers. With effective leadership in place, managers can direct and redirect employees through effective communication and use of discipline and remuneration. This is one of the key to stay on top of the organisation goals and strategies that have been planned. Thus, the command element of getting the optimum return from all employees in the interest of the whole concern is critical and applicable. For example, under ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is illustrated in Toni Morrison s short story Recititaf. The relationships of Twyla and Roberta are a rollercoaster from the moment they meet at the orphanage, to their confrontational meeting at the Howard Johnsons, to the picketing during segregation, until the end when they try and sort things out. One of the ways to show the rocky relationship of the two is through their dialog when they discuss their mothers. On the next meeting, farther into their lives, Roberta actually calls out to Twyla in a grocery checkout line. When they begin to talk, Roberta asks if her Twyla s mother is sick as well, meaning that what she said last time they met isn t correct, that she was still sick. As the conversation continues, she asks again about her mother, asking if she got well, which she never did, a nice way of saying she passed away. Later on, during the picketing and everything, Twyla notices Roberta picketing with a sign larger than her mother s cross. Machiavelli And Humanism While the moral codes of Humanism and Catholicism consider being deceitful to be wrong, from an amoral perspective, betrayal is unavoidable and comes with its own set of benefits. This is Machiavelli s view in his 1513 work The Prince, in which he details the complexities of gaining and maintaining political power to his Italian statesman Lorenzo de Medici, from whom he hopes to regain a political position after shifts in the unstable Florentine republic. Despite Machiavelli s tongue in cheek perspective, his intentions in writing The Prince exemplify the two faced nature of mankind. During political upset in Florence, the ruling family betrays Machiavelli himself by temporarily jailing him for treason, stripping him of his political position, and banishing him. Yet unlike Dante, who is more personally affected by his exile, Machiavelli sees Medici family s return to power as an opportunity to regain his own position, which is why he hopes to impress Lorenzo with The Prince. For him, betrayal is more expected under the circumstances, and so he hopes to play them at their own game. • 9. Theme Of Nature In The Scarlet Letter Tedra Vrbka SLEssay English 11 Period 4 16 November 2017 Passion and Hatred In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvellous and merciful, that the sufferer should never know the intensity of what he endures by its present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles after it (Hawthorne 52). As Hester Prynne, the main character, is put through hardships from her sinful nature, she faces the rough times sin gave her and the way she endures the lives of the people closest to her. Nathaniel Hawthorne explains how a small Puritan village gets through sin and the way it took over their lives in The Scarlet Letter. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne was a woman who sinned against the Puritan way, yet got through it and was able to live a life in which her daughter learned how to be civilized and respectable. The stigma was gone, Hester heaved a long deep sigh in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit (Hawthorne 182). Hester was going through the sin that took over her life and as a result, she finally decided to tell her village that Dimmesdale was Pearl s father. As she took the A off her bosom, the sin was freed. She finally felt free from what defined her life. Raising Pearl made Hester feel as she had a purpose and was doing a good act in life. On ... There were times where the interviewee was a little bit out of control and Dr. Phil calmed her and spoke firmly about her behavior. The interviewer conveys empathy in some ways. For example, told her I understand what you are going through and It is difficult . Those two phrases made me realize that the interviewer feels empathy towards the interviewee. It is an inappropriate expression of power that affects workers and their productivity in an unfavourable way (Spry, 1998). Management, and other types of employees, who occupy high status roles sometimes believe that harassing their subordinates is within their rights and make demands of the lower status employees (Langton, Robbins, Judge, 2010, p. 313). For example, women within an organization who are highly educated, young, and seeking to move up within the ranks of the organization can be perceived by men as a threat and so are targeted (Mueller, De Coster, amp; Estes, 2001). The corporate culture in which individuals work can also influence who becomes a victim of sexual harassment. Women who work in male dominated occupations or work groups are more likely to be harassed than women who work in female dominated or gender integrated occupations or work groups (Mueller et al., 2001). The Genome is a complete set of genes that make up an organism. Genes are made up of DNA (deoxynucleic acid) which subsequently is made up of long paired strands. These paired strands attach in a specific manner, for example, Adenine (A) attaches itself to Thymine (T) and Cytosine(C) to Guanine (G). • 13. How Did Frederick Douglass Benefit From His Education Throughout the works of Frederick Douglass there is a prominent contradiction referring to literacy. At times, Douglass regrets his education as it makes his slavery more difficult to tolerate. Additionally, his education opens them up to more abuse as Harriet Jacob asserts they were living in a culture of silence (Cutter 209). Thorough examination of Frederick Douglass writing reveals various paradoxes within his testimony regarding his literary education; while Douglass did benefit from his education in some way, in many other ways, it shattered his spirit and lead to a lifetime of abuse. Douglass narrative demonstrates how his literary education is both a blessing and a curse. He believed that permitting slaves to read was a contradiction, a paradox if you will, unable to render freedom, or provide them a legitimate education. Douglass reasoned that the education was a ploy to let African Americans believe they were treated fairly. Douglass expresses, As I read and contemplated the subject, behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish (Douglass 1200). • 14. The Meaning Of A True Education Synthesis Essay Rough Draft A true education can be defined as enough knowledge given to a student to be successful in life after completing school. The purpose of school is to give students this true education, but as time passes, so must the old ways of accomplishing this. Reformists have made an effort to adjust the education system to accompany the changing economy and surpass competition, and in doing so, have lost sight of a true education. The schools of today s society attempt to prepare students for the future by providing them with basic academic skills; although these skills are handy for doing well on standardized tests, they are nearly ineffectual for thriving in daily life. The first time the education of children became serious was in the Age of Enlightenment. During this time, the quality of education was based on the economy, thus it was a primitive basis of education. The current education system still runs on some of these old ideas, but in truth, the validity of these principles has expired (RSA). However, the education system has developed somewhat, and some aspects of the information taught to students have advanced. Nevertheless, it is advancing in the wrong direction. The education students receive prepare them for college; it doesn t prepare them for any other pathway. Discussion Questions On Marcel Duchamp s Urinal Painting Kimberly Greene Professor Whiting HUMN 2002 Art March 11, 2017 Art Assessment II Task 1: Artist: Marcel Duchamp Title: Fountain Signed: R. Mutt Year: 1917 Task 2: Do you think this is art? Is it art or not, why? Yes, I believe that Marcel Duchamp s urinal painting is considered art because it served as some type of meaning or purpose to him. He was inspired in some way to paint this type of artwork/painting. One can interpret it in more ways than one. Some may not even understand it, but somehow Duchamp did and that is all that matters. So, therefore, this is what led to him painting such a feature and that is why I would consider it as a piece of art. Task 3: Find information on Fountain. Consider concepts. His famous painting, titled Fountain, is viewed as one of Duchamp s most famous works and is widely seen as an icon of 20th century art. (Tate). Therefore, I believe if it changed how people viewed Conceptual art and artwork throughout that era/time period, then it is considered as such a famous piece of artwork. While some may not understand the point of Duchamp s painting of the urinal, others find much needed purpose to it. If it outlined and changed such an era/time period of art, then I would say Duchamp set a new limit on what is to be or not to be considered art. I believe art is what comes from the inside the inner soul and what draws through because what lies within you, serves as a meaning to not only you, but to others as well. While, some people look at a piece of art or artwork and somehow find no meaning to it, and think, Oh, I could have done that by just dabbing or throwing a little paint on the canvas, others find meanings to these pieces of artwork. To me, I believe that all artwork has a meaning and serves a purpose to the artist and/or painter. While we may not understand all of the concepts highlighted in a painting, such as this one, or in any such artwork, I believe that we can still get something out of it, as a whole. By saying this, I believe that this is exactly what Duchamp did and believed, that you couldn t define art, and that is why I consider Duchamp s famous piece, Fountain, which drastically changed the views/concepts of Conceptual art period/era, a piece of ... These are expressed through Linda s dislike of divorce and her desire to keep her children happy and innocent, Linda feels that she has failed in both cases and feels guilty and responsible for failing . However, Linda did admit that her mother s general disapproval and opinion that Linda was to blame for the divorce may have influenced her thoughts. Linda recognises that her memories and previous feelings about parents divorce may also be effecting her thoughts and feelings currently. Edgar on the other hand didn t beg for Catherine to haunt him, for he was looking forward to their time together in the afterlife. This proves Heathcliff s selfishness to needing Catherine with him, and also confirms the fact that Edgar is the one that would unconditionally love Catherine forever. Heathcliff selfishly only wanted Catherine for himself, he visited Catherine s coffin and removed the blond lock of hair which belongs to Edgar and threw it to the floor, then taking his own and placing it in. Another one of the many things Heathcliff wanted was power. He seduced and married Isabella Linton, not out of love, but out of selfish thoughts of abusing her to get revenge against her brother, Edgar because he married Heathcliff s lover. When Isabella died, Heathcliff s son Linton was handed over to him; Heathcliff forced Linton to marry Edgar and Catherine s daughter, Catherine or Cathy Linton. Scott Fitzgerald, and the novel Goodbye Columbus, by Philip Roth they explore the same dynamics of the chase of the American dream. In both novels there are similar themes, they both use the idea of sex and money as a form of power. Both novels can relate to each other because the authors decided to show how the pursuit of the American dream may not always be a good thing, and how sex and money can cause problems in that pursuit. To Neil there are many differences in the Patimkin family that make them very different from his own. They are able to eat in the dining room instead of the kitchen. They have a maid that makes the meals and cleans up after them. They also have a refrigerator full of fruit that is always full. This is all the ideal life for Neil, and when you put Brenda in the mix you have Neil s perfect world. If he could become part of the Patimkin family he would have sex, money and in essence the American dream. Those three ideas are also present in the novel The Great Gatsby. In this novel the two worlds are divided by old and new money, instead of the idea of assimilation to society after immigration. In this novel, where you live determines your wealth, just as it did in the novel Goodbye Columbus. In The Great Gatsby the idea of wealth representing power is the most prevalent aspect of the novel. The title character Jay Gatsby, is wealthy and he lives in the new money side of town. The love of his life is Daisy Buchannan, and she lives on the old money side of town. Their love is similar to that of Neil and Brenda. Kelman, a professor of social ethics, and V. Lee Hamilton, a sociologist, discuss how the practice of authorization, routinization, and dehumanization are employed to carry out unethical actions similar to the My Lai Massacre. The American Law assumes that subordinates should be obeying orders; however, when linked to obeying superiors, moral principles become inoperative. Erich Fromm, a psychoanalyst, and the author of Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem, explains how the different types of mindset and authorities can be noticeably effective in whether one is obedient. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As US military expert Rod Powers explains how those who are military members who fail to obey their superiors risk serious consequences in Military Orders , and could relate to why Dawson and Downey were convicted for their crimes (Power). Required to follow orders, a soldier does not need to obey an unlawful order, but those who obey can be pinned with criminal prosecution and in this case, it matches with Dawson and Downey s situation where they taped and tied up Santiago (Power). Fromm can conclude that irrational authority is used by using a comparison between a slave and their master; the superior wants the best they can draw from their subordinate and tries to exploit them, leading them to control with force (Fromm 126). When it comes to deciding whether or not an order is ethical, it is also the soldier s call to believe the legitimacy of the order; according to Saul McLeod, who is a psychologist and the author of Obedience to Authority, obedience is a form of social influence by responding to a direct order from another individual (McLeod). Although Col. Jessup urged for no one to touch Santiago, Kendricks directly ordered Dawson and Downey to treat him with a Code Red, going against Col. Jessup s orders. Numerous situations occur where two people will discuss the same topic, but would contradict each other. It is easy to say I was only following orders to justify one s self to explain their reasoning, but that statement, also known as the Nuremberg Defense, is not going to save a person every time. Yes, Dawson and Downey were only following orders, but did they ever take a moment to question whether it was the right action and for a sensible reason? Probably not in consideration that it is a routine to follow a command because if they deny their superior s order, many consequences will follow. Kelman and Hamilton logically claimed that ... Patterns of Death Today it is probable that you will die in a hospital, hospice care facility, or nursing home, aside from death on impact, such as in accidents. In the past, confronting death was common. As societies advanced and learned more about health and medicine, death became less of an everyday experience. At the beginning of the novel, Scout sees herself as gamine as she plays with her brother and never had a female figure to be a role model. By the end of the novel, she receives a taste of the outside world and what goes on beyond her house. With Tom Robinson and the court case, all the way to Boo Radley the monster, Scout sees and lives everything. (Kids Mental Health , 2009) Another challenge students with ODD face in school would be that they have a hard time following rules, losing their temper, and cursing. When trying to learn in a classroom those are three things that need to be followed. Usually when a student does not comply with the rules, loses their temper, or curses in class they are asked to leave or they get in trouble. Book 3 is dependent on the two previous books as it brings the ethical implication to the fore by discussing the nature of the soul and its mortality. The culmination of Book 3 therefore death is nothing to us makes explicit the crux of atomic theory set out in Books 1 3 showing that death is not to be feared nor is there life after death. ... In the final three books, Lucretius takes on his next task to free man from superstition, namely the belief that the gods influence the world or that man influences the gods. The whole poem could be viewed as supporting this view as Lucretius in Books 1 2 is explaining this atomic system in order to show that the world is composed in entirely materialistic terms, lacking the need of divine intervention. The History And Transitions Of Music The history and transitions of music has had many talented persons that have influenced music but none are so well known as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. All three of these great composers performed during the Classic period and it would act as the base of classic music for the next one hundred and fifty, to two hundred years. The names of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are so well known that people who have little to no knowledge of music will recognize their names. The urban communities of Austria and Germany would find the settings from 1750 1820 that would become known as the classical period. The Classic period had many developments such as the sonata, symphony and string quartet along with a growth of opera houses and concert halls were abundant during the classical period. The Golden Age will later refer to this time of classical music. The works of Franz Joseph Hayden, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven will be everlasting in the world of classical music. There are many opinions of the three big composers that do not include Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, furthermore everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Austria March 31st 1732 and died May 31st 1809 at age seventy seven. Salinger s Nine Stories , there are two stories that indicate a death, and, remarkably, these two short stories are what begin and end this captivating piece of literature. The first story is called A Perfect Day for Bananafish and introduces a man who has been through the hell of World War II, which allows him to see things from a different perspective. The latter is called Teddy and revolves around a young, ingenious boy that seems to have a speculative mindset and very deep insight into life. In both stories the reader is introduced to a genius , but the geniuses, with all the potentials at hand, end up going mad and killing themselves. However, this proves to be Salinger s point. It demonstrates a fine line that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Seymour takes his own life, we backtrack to his story and he is then seen as a celestial figure, ahead of his time and full of wisdom. Metaphorically speaking, the bananafish ideology depicts humanity in the postwar boom generation, where riches surround all people. However, amidst all the possessions, we cannot help ourselves and we continuously and relentlessly consume, regardless of what may happen as a result. We are each trapped in our own banana filled hole, in which Seymour ultimately escapes from through his death. In the final short story Teddy , the main character is a ten year old boy who is as intuitive and intelligent as any character gets in this novel, with the exception of Seymour of course. Like Seymour Glass, Teddy sees the world differently than his peers. The two tend to focus their a lot of their attention on small details, such as orange peels, the colour of bathing suits, a woman that seemingly looks at Seymour s feet, and appear to mirror a larger scale vision of humanity. Teddy s orange peels recall Seymour s bananafish. Both their objects, in Seymour s case an imaginary one, are somewhat allegorical in a sense that they seem to suggest a philosophical portrayal of humanity. To clarify, Teddy first notices the orange peels floating and finds them interesting. The remnants of what was once a living fruit, now floating, lifeless on the dark water. This may include changes within the following, Business cycle Inflation Unemployment International trade The business that that I will be looking at is Whitbread who own Premier Inn and Costa coffee. I will be explaining within this task how the above may affect Whitbread and its two companies Costa and Premier inn whether it is for the better or worse. This will also affect trade as If the UK has higher inflation than competitor countries (which it isn t now, but it has been for a lot of the last few decades) then UK prices gradually rise above imported prices. More imports are bought, so demand leaks out of the country and leaves UK businesses in a weak position such as Premier inn and Costa Coffee so overall inflation is not a good thing if it does occur and will have a negative effect on Whitbread s businesses. Unemployment High unemployment rates especially within the countries that Whitbread operate their businesses, Costs and Premier inn can have a great effect on business operations as high unemployment will mean that more people will be relying on benefits for survival and as a result will be spending less, this would in turn affect businesses such as Premier inn and costa coffee as no one will be using their products and services which will then effect profits which would mean that they would have to halt growth and cut staff which are all negative factors as a result. This means when Whitbread are planning on expanding within different countries they will carefully have to look at these factors. Since consumers have lower confidence in the strength of the economy and less to spend, demand for products and services drops, and

The initial colonies were very unified both religiously and politically. There was little variance and a strong sense of identity. The continued influx of colonizers would fall to a trickle of only a hundred or so per year after the English Civil War in 1642 and remain subdued until the American Revolution (Reader s Companion to American History). The colonies which were formed after the English Civil War were much more diverse in their makeup than were the initial Puritan colonies. These colonies formed over a longer period of time and their populations were composed of people who had left England for a varying degree of reasons. In addition, rather than being composed of immigrants from one primary area in England, the English colonists were more geographically diverse as well. The English had limited dealings with the Natives of the areas they colonized, preferring to operate their colonies as autonomously as possible, depending more on interaction with the respective mother countries than with the Native Americans (Foner and Garraty). England would become, arguably, the most successful of the northern European countries that colonized, eventually extending their range all the way into the interior of the new continent (Foner and Garraty). Italian American Attitudes Towards Speech Summary Italian American attitudes towards speech not only is representative of their family orientated culture, but also for the role oral traditions as a medium for providing younger generations the necessary values and beliefs to thrive in what otherwise was a foreign society with different ideologies. Throughout Mount Allegro, Mangione repeatedly talks about the idea of second generation Italian immigrants being able to speak the parent s language, or mother tongue, Italian (Mangione 20 and 49 50). One such lesson is the idea of never telling others about one s own problems or family problems. Particularly relevant in Mangione s anecdote about Comare Alfreda and Compare Calogero, in which Comare Alfreda discusses Compare Calogero s philandering to Jerre s mother (Mangione 168). As discussion of Compare Calogero s philandering to others could result in others, especially women, paying more attention to Compare Calogero, this could have resulted in Comare Alfreda s problems from coming true, emphasizing the sense of vulnerability when one reveals too much information. This particularly becomes relevant, as Mangione states that eventually the details of the story soon got around to [his] relatives (Mangione 180). In addition to keeping quiet about one s own problems, the idea of omereta, the oath of silence, is also a practice passed down through descent, due to the older generation s lack of faith in the law (Mangione ... Soil erosion. In Forests and the end of second millennium in forests in a full world (2001) George M. Woodwell points out that the most successful civilizations have decayed as forests where destroyed and replaced with scrublands. The scrublands were further impoverished by intensive grazing and erosion until the underlying rocks emerged and became the land scape. He goes further giving an example of the ancient Syria, Persia, throughout the Levant, and the Mediterranean basin, also the decline of the state known as Greece today was as a result of loss of forests and the impoverishment of the landscape. The same process happened with respect to Carthage in North Africa. We also have contemporary examples of land degradation from Haiti and Madagascar, now over populated and deforested and degraded to the point where their land scape are dysfunctional, incapable of supporting organized society. The rivers no longer flow in established channels, water from storms in mountains appears as floods in low lands and carries silt to fill harbors and destroy the coastal fisheries, so to restore all these problems, there is need to reforest and stabilize the uplands to regain control of water flows and water quality and to re establish a potentially ... • 46. Methods Of Data Collection Methods of Data Collection Obtaining fake news data sets can be very challenging due to three reasons. First, deciding whether a news post on social media is fake news or not is highly subjective. Second, Fake news stories and fraudulent accounts are routinely taken down by Social Media platforms like Twitter and Facebook, which makes it hard to get historical data about fake news posts. So, we have used a data set compiled by buzzfeed, where more than 2000 facebook posts were analyzed and labeled based on their truthfulness. Data Collection with Facebook API The best way to access, collect and store data from social media platforms is generally through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) [Lomborg and Bechmann 2014]. APIs are easy to use interfaces that are usually accompanied by documentation that+ describes how to request the data that one is interested in. They are designed to be accessed by other applications as opposed to web interfaces which are designed for people; APIs provide a set of well defined methods that an application can invoke to request data. For instance, in a social media platform, one may want to retrieve all data posted by a specific user or all the posts containing a certain keyword. Facebook provides a documented API9 with a set of software development kits (SDKs) for multiple programming languages and platforms that make it easy to develop applications with its data. Similar to Twitter API, Facebook also requires registering an application10 to generate the keys needed to access the API. In contrast to Twitter, most of the content posted by Facebook users is private and therefore there is no access to specific content posted, unless the users are friends with the authenticated account. ... • 47. Economics and the Problem of Utility Maximization Within the field of economics, the utility maximization problem represents an attempt to quantify the rationale used when consumers attempt to maximize the satisfaction, or utility, they derive from the purchase of goods. With the typical predetermined budgetary restriction imposed on the process, consumers must balance their own limited funds against their desire to obtain certain items. This means that the eventual level of utility received from all potential affordable packages, and thus the consumer s optimal choices, can be expressed via the equation x(p, w), where p is equal to a good s price and w is equal to the consumer s wealth. The price of any given product must be considered during any attempt to answer the utility maximization problem, because if , then u must be continuous and no goods can be obtained free of charge (McEachern, 2010). In other words, because the two rules dictating the boundaries of utility maximization within a two good model clearly state that the marginal utilities per dollar must be equal and the consumer s entire budget must be exhausted, the inclusion of goods which can be obtained free of charge skews any conclusions regarding the consumer s eventual utility. A good which costs nothing will always provide more immediate happiness than one which costs money, and this fact prohibits economists from effectively modeling any two good comparisons between free and for cost items. As is typically the case for economics, however, simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
