There are two types of long-term memory: declarative and non-declarative. Declarative memory involves consciously recalling facts and experiences, including episodic and semantic memory. Non-declarative memory deals with skills and procedures rather than facts. Three systems in the brain are involved in long-term memory storage: the cerebellum and striatum for implicit memories, the amygdala for emotional memories, and the hippocampus for consciously recalled episodic and semantic memories. After initial processing, memories are stored in the cortical association areas.
There are many different ways of thinking about human behavior. Psychologists utilize a variety of perspectives when studying how people think, feel, and behave.
Some researchers focus on one specific perspective, such as the biological perspective, while others take a more eclectic approach that incorporates multiple points of view.
There is no single perspective that is "better" than another;
each simply emphasizes different aspects of human behavior.

INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY
The word Psychology has its origin from two Greek words ‘Psyche’ and ‘Logos’, ‘psyche’ means ‘soul’ and ‘logos’ means ‘study’. Thus literally, Psychology means ‘the study of soul’ or ‘science of soul’.
The first definition of the Psychology was the study of the soul:
The earliest attempts at defining Psychology owe their origin to the most mysterious and philosophical concept, namely that of soul. What is soul? How can it be studied? The inability to find clear answers to such questions led some ancient Greek philosophers to define psychology as the study of the mind.
In terms of the study of consciousness
The description and explanation of the states of consciousness is the task of Psychology which is usually done by the instrument introspection—process of looking within
This definition was also rejected on the grounds that
(i) It could not include the study of the consciousness of animals.
(ii) It would not include subconscious and unconscious activities of mind.
(iii) The introspection method for the study proved that it is most subjective and unscientific method
In terms of the study of behaviour
The most modern and widely accepted definition of psychology even today, is the study of behaviour, both humans and animals
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes.
Scientific -
Behaviour - includes all of our outward or overt actions and reactions, such as verbal and facial expressions and movements.
Mental processes - refer to all the internal and covert activity of our mind such as thinking, feeling and remembering. It is a scientific study because to study behaviour and mental processes, the psychologists use the scientific methods for understanding more precisely and accurately.

Science Journal - How much space we have in brain and How memory is stored-re...saphyaire Wind
Our brain is magnificent storing device which holds all memory of many decades we live. Many questions arises from the perception we have about our brain,
e.g.
• How much space does our brain have?
• Is there unlimited space in our brain?
• Can our brain hold unlimited memory or information?
• How may gb or tb space is there in our brain?
But our brain isn’t like computer and our memory isn’t stored like data stored in harddrive. In fact, our brain is so efficient it just stores bits and pieces of info of events. When we recall an event, the brain reconstructs the whole event that is why our memory isn’t very vivid and few details changes every time we recall something.
To know, how our brain stores and retrieves memory and how our memory is different from data stored in disc of hard-drive, watch the video in the presentation.

One of the best books I have read this year is Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School. The applications for presentation are many. This is a book review of sorts, though I do not highlight all aspects of the book. I focus on the three rules that relate most directly, though all the rules have lessons. Just a fantastic book.

On the medial and ventral surfaces of each cerebral hemisphere is a ring of mostly paleocortex that surrounds a group of deep structures associated with overall behaviour and emotions.
Ring of limbic cortex function as a two-way communication and association linkage between the neocortex and the lower limbic structures.
Many of the behavioural function of the limbic system are also mediated through the reticular nuclei in the brainstem and their associated nuclei.
These are interconnected complex of basal brain elements.
In the middle, hypothalamus is located which is the central elements of the limbic system.
Subcortical components of limbic system includes;

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. 2 TYPES OF LONG-TERM
MEMORY
Declarative Memory
Non-declarative
Memory
3. Declarative Memory
Memories which can be consciously recalled such
as facts and knowledge
Examples are:
1.Episodic Memory
- this is any memory of a specific event
that happened while you were present.
2. Semantic Memory
- this contains generalized knowledge of
the world that does not involve memory of
a specific event.
4. Non- Declarative Memory
It deals more on enhancing or learning skill
It involves body movements and how to use
objects in the environment
Examples are:
6. 3 LONG-TERM
MEMORY SYSTEM
• Cerebellum and
striatum
• Amygdala
• Hippocampus
7. Long-Term Memories begins with sensation after being
processed in to the
CORTICAL SENSORY ASSOCIATION AREAS
- any various region of the cerebral cortex
When we are learning to do things (implicit
procedures), output goes mostly to the cerebellum
and striatum. When we experience an emotional
event, output goes to the amygdala. And when we
consciously and explicitly remember personal
events (episodes), facts, and information, output
goes mostly to the hippocampus. After being
processed by the hippocampus, however, the
memory is stored back in the cortical association
area from where it came.
8. • Cerebellum and Striatum
• For Implicit or procedural memory
Striatum helps coordinate motivation with
body movement. It facilitates and balances
motivation with both higher-level and lower-level
functions, such as inhibiting one's
behavior in a complex social interaction
and fine-motor functions of inhibiting small
voluntary movement.(Wikipedia)
Short- Term Memory
9.
10.
11. Amygdala
are almond-shaped groups of nuclei located
deep and medially within the temporal
lobes of the brain in complex vertebrates,
including humans. Shown in research to
perform a primary role in the processing
of memory, decision-making, and emotional
reactions.
For emotional memory
12. In complex vertebrates, including humans, the amygdalae perform
primary roles in the formation and storage of memories associated with
emotional events. Research indicates that, during fear conditioning,
sensory stimuli reach the basolateral complexes of the amygdalae,
particularly the lateral nuclei, where they form associations with
memories of the stimuli. The association between stimuli and the
aversive events they predict may be mediated by long-term
potentiation, a sustained enhancement of signaling between affected
neurons. There have been studies that show that damage to the amygdala
can interfere with memory that is strengthened by emotion. One study
examined a patient with bilateral degeneration of the amygdala. He was
told a violent story accompanied by matching pictures and was observed
based on how much he could recall from the story. The patient had less
recollection of the story than patients without amygdala damage,
showing that the amygdala has a strong connection with emotional
learning. (Wikipedia)
13. Hippocampus
Is a major component of the brains of human
Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi, one in each
side of the brain. It belongs to the limbic system and plays
important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term
memory to long-term memory and spatial navigation.
supports a variety of functions
including emotion, behavior, motivation, long-term memory,
and olfaction. Emotional life is largely housed in the limbic
system, and it has a great deal to do with the formation of
memories.
olfactory bulbs, hippocampus, amygdala, anterior thalamic
nuclei, fornix, columns of fornix, mammillary body, septum
pellucidum, habenular
commissure, cingulate gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, limbic
cortex, and limbic midbrain
14. The prefrontal cortex is the front
most region of the frontal lobes. It
plays an important part in attention,
appropriate social behavior, impulse
control, and working memory (Baier
et al., 2010)
