Topic- Production of biogas
Biogas
Biogas is a clean and efficient fuel.
It is a mixture of:
• Methane (CH4)
• Carbon dioxide (CO2)
• Hydrogen (H2)
• Hydrogen sulphide (H2S)
The chief constituent of biogas is methane (65%).
Composition of biogas
Substrate-
• Plant & animal biomass
• Animal biomass – cattle dung, manure from poultry, goats & sheep
slaughter-house & fishery wastes.
• Agricultural wastes also used
Process of Biogas Production
• Biogas production process (Anaerobic digestion) is a multiple-stage
process in which some main stages are:
• Liquefaction
• Acid Production
• Acetate Production
• Methane Production
(1)LIQUEFACTION
• Complex organic matter is degraded to basic structure by
hydraulic bacteria.
• Protein - Polypeptide and Amino Acid
• Fat - Glycerine and Fatty Acid
• Amylase - Monosaccharides and Polysaccharides
(2) ACID PRODUCTION (Acidogenesis)
• Simple organic matters are converted into H2 and CO2
• Acting bacteria in this process are called hydrogen-producing
bacteria and acid-producing bacteria.
3.ACETATE PRODUCTION (Acetogenesis)
• The short-chain fatty acids are metabolized by syntrophic
acetogenic and homoacetogenic bacteria into acetate, carbon
dioxide, and hydrogen.
(4) METHANE PRODUCTION (Methanogenesis)
• In this process, acetic acid, H2, CO2, are converted into CH4.
• Methane-producing bacteria have strict PH requirement and low
adaptability to temperature.
• Ex- Methanosarcina barkeri, Methanobacterium omelianskii
Factors affecting methane formation-
pH-
• 6-8
• Acidic medium lowers methane formation.
Temperature
• Fluctuation ↓ methane formation – inhibit growth of methanogens.
• 30-40 ℃
Nitrogen concentration
• ↑ N2 - ↓ growth of bacteria - ↓ CH4
C:N ratio
• Micro-organisms in a biogas plant needs both N and C .
• Research has shown that the methanogenic bacteria work best with a C/N ratio
30:1.
Biogas plants-
• There are two types of biogas plants in usage for the production of
biogas. These are:
The fixed- dome type of biogas plant
The floating gas holder type of biogas plant
Fixed dome type of Biogas Plant
Floating gas holder type of biogas plant
Uses of biogas
• Domestic fuel
• For street lighting
• Generation of electricity
• If compressed, it can replace CNG (compressed
natural gas) for use in vehicles
Applications
The Biogas Train “Amanda”
Sweden
A biogas bus, Sweden
Benefits of Biogas
• Availability of power at affordable rates
• Reduces pollution
• Reduces usage of fossil fuels
• Saves on the environment (Reduces deforestation)
• Improves living standards in rural areas
• Reduces global warming
• Produces good quality enriched manure to improve soil fertility.
• Effective and convenient way for sanitary disposal of organic wastes,
improving the hygienic conditions.
• As a smokeless domestic fuel it reduces the incidence of eye and lung
diseases.
Limitations of biogas plants
• Initial cost of installation of the plant is high.
• Number of cattle owned by an average family of farmers is
inadequate to feed a biogas plant.
Recent Developments
• With the many benefits of biogas, it is starting to become a popular
source of energy and is starting to be used in the United States more.
• On 5 October 2010, biogas was injected into the UK gas grid for the
first time. As of September 2013, there are about 130 non-sewage
biogas plants in the UK.
• Germany is Europe's biggest biogas producer and the market leader in
biogas technology.
• To create awareness and associate the people interested in biogas,
the Indian Biogas Associationwas formed. India's Ministry of New and
Renewable Energy offers some subsidy per model constructed.
Conclusion
Biogas is a clean source of energy. Biogas plants have been in
operation for a long period of time, especially in rural areas around
the globe. The research organizations should focus on newer efficient
low-cost designs. The governments can play important role by
introducing different legal frameworks, education schemes and the
availability of technology and simultaneously creating more
awareness and providing more subsidies.
