Bioreactors can also be designed to use aerobic or anaerobic processes in series to degrade different types of contaminants.

Bioreactors are vessels where biological degradation of contaminants can be isolated and controlled. They range from simple lined depressions in the ground to advanced metal containers. Treatment occurs through natural degradation by microorganisms. There are two main types of bioreactors for soil - dry bioreactors which treat soil with just microbes and nutrients, and slurry bioreactors which mix soil with water to form a slurry. Slurry bioreactors are generally more effective at treating a wider range of pollutants. Bioreactors can also be designed to use aerobic or anaerobic processes in series to degrade different types of contaminants.
Tertiary waste management ppt
Tertiary treatment involves additional wastewater treatment processes beyond secondary treatment to further improve water quality before discharge or reuse. Degradation of lignin and cellulose using microbes
Lignocelluloses, the major component of biomass, makes up about half of the matter produced by photosynthesis. It consists of three types of polymers – cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin – that are strongly intermeshed and chemically bonded by non-covalent forces and by covalent cross-linkages. A great variety of fungi and bacteria can fragment these macromolecules by using a battery of hydrolytic or oxidative enzymes. In native substrates, binding of the polymers hinders their biodegradation. Molecular genetics of cellulose-, hemicellulose- and lignin-degrading systems advanced considerably during the 1990s. Most of the enzymes have been cloned, sequenced, and expressed both in homologous and in heterologous hosts. Much is known about the structure, genomic organization, and regulation of the genes encoding these proteins.

Bioremediation refers to the use of either naturally occurring or
deliberately introduced microorganisms to consume and break down
environmental pollutants, in order to clean a polluted site.
The process of bioremediation enhances the rate of the natural
microbial degradation of contaminants by supplementing the
indigenous microorganisms (bacteria or fungi) with nutrients, carbon
sources, or electron donors (biostimulation, biorestoration) or by
adding an enriched culture of microorganisms that have specific
characteristics that allow them to degrade the desired contaminant at
a quicker rate (bioaugmentation).
It is a cleaning process that degrades dangerous contaminants using
naturally existing microbes. These bacteria may consume and
degrade organic chemicals as a source of food and energy, degrade
organic substances that are dangerous to living creatures, including
humans, and degrade the organic pollutants into inert products.
Because the bacteria already exist in nature, they offer no pollution
concern

Bioremediation is defined as ‘the process of using microorganisms to remove
the environmental pollutants where microbes serve as scavengers’.
• The removal of organic wastes by microbes leads to environmental clean-up.
The other names/terms used for bioremediation are biotreatment,
bioreclamation, and biorestoration.
• The term “Xenobiotics” (xenos means foreign) refers to the unnatural, foreign
and synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides, refrigerants, solvents
and other organic compounds.
• The microbial degradation of xenobiotics also helps in reducing the
environmental pollution. Pseudomonas which is a soil microorganism
effectively degrades xenobiotics.
• Different strains of Pseudomonas that are capable of detoxifying more than
100 organic compounds (e.g. phenols, biphenyls, organophosphates,
naphthalene, etc.) have been identified.
• Some other microbial strains are also known to have the capacity to degrade
xenobiotics such as Mycobacterium, Alcaligenes, Norcardia, etc.

Filtration

- 2. Living organisms (such as bacteria, enzymes, fungi, viruses) or their products that can be hazardous to animal or human health if inhaled, swallowed, or otherwise absorbed into the body. Definition: Biocontamination means contamination with biological material or agents

Several types of Biocontaminants are found in the environment Indicator molds • Molds are fungi that act as environmental decomposers that aid in the decomposition of plant matter such as trees and leaves and also decaying organic material. • Three categories of different types of molds are 1. common indoor, 2. common outdoor, 3. water damage indicators.
- 5. Gram negative and positive bacteria Gram Negative Bacteria Gram-negative bacteria are a group of bacteria that do not retain the crystal violet stain used in the gram staining method of bacterial differentiation. Gram Positive Bacteria Gram-positive bacteria are bacteria that give a positive result in the gram stain test.
- 6. Microbial Particulates • Different microbial organism or particulate presence in the bio can be as an indicator of the biocontamination. • Different types of microbial organisms grow into different types of environments. • Due to having different types of environments different types of microbial particulate growing can easily be used as a biocontaminant.
- 7. Mycotoxins • The word Mycotoxin came from Greek word mykes, mukos meaning "fungus" and toxikon meaning "poison"). • It is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by organisms of the fungus kingdom, commonly known as molds. • The term 'mycotoxin' is usually reserved for the toxic chemical products produced by fungi that readily colonize crops.

Galactomannans • Galactomannans are often used in food products to increase the viscosity of the water phase. • Guar gum has been used to add viscosity to artificial tears, but is not as stable as carboxymethyl cellulose. • As it is used as a food for different materials so it can easily used to biocontaminate.
