Water is essential for all life and covers 70% of the Earth's surface, mostly in oceans. 1.6% is found underground in aquifers, while a tiny amount exists in plants, animals, and manufactured goods. Water recycling decreases extraction from dwindling sources and pollution of sensitive ecosystems. It also creates and enhances wetlands while reducing pollutants at treatment plants. Recycled water has been safely used for industrial, home, and agricultural non-potable needs, and this reuse is growing. Advances in treatment and health studies may soon enable planned indirect potable water reuse.
