Water is essential for all life and covers 70% of the Earth's surface, mostly in oceans. 1.6% is underground in aquifers and a tiny amount is found in plants, animals, and manufactured goods. Water recycling decreases extraction from dwindling sources and pollution of sensitive ecosystems. It can also be used to create or improve wetlands while reducing pollution by leaving it at treatment plants. Recycled water has been safely used for many non-potable purposes and its uses are growing as treatment technology advances make indirect potable reuse possible.
