This document summarizes the process of beta oxidation of fatty acids. Fatty acids stored in adipose tissue are released from triglycerides by hormone-sensitive lipase. The free fatty acids bind to albumin and are transported to tissues where they enter cells and undergo beta oxidation in the mitochondria. Beta oxidation is a four-step process where two-carbon fragments are repeatedly cleaved from the fatty acid to produce acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2, yielding energy for the cell. Short and medium chain fatty acids can directly enter the mitochondria, while long chain fatty acids require carnitine transport into the mitochondria to undergo beta oxidation.
