Dramatic Irony in Oedipus Rex Dramatic irony is one of the things that make plays successful. Its role
in this play makes a big difference. In Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, dramatic irony in this play is very
effective in not only revealing to us more about Oedipus and his characteristics, but also building
suspense because the audience know many things that the characters do not. Through the scenes of
Oedipus cursing the unknown murderer, the messenger telling about Polybus, and Jocasta talking
about Laius to Oedipus, we can see this dramatic irony and the significance of it. The scene in which
Oedipus curses the unknown murderer who, according to Creon who heard from Apollo, causes the
plague to occur in the kingdom is a good example of dramatic irony. He says as part of his curse not to
let the murderer join in sacrifice, lustration, or in prayer (225 226). Then he says, I pray that that man s
life be consumed in evil / and wretchedness. / And as for me, this curse applies no less (233 235). The
dramatic irony is that the audience knows that the murderer he is cursing is Oedipus himself. The
significance this dramatic irony in this scene has to the rest of the play is that it makes the audience
start to engage in the play. This scene makes the reader wonder how events in the play will turn out
because of Oedipus being blind to his own life. It introduces Oedipus as the character he is known as
and this scene is one of the first moments of dramatic irony in the play. Not only is dramatic irony
shown through the unknown murderer cursing scene with Oedipus, but also when the messenger from
Corinth comes to Thebes to tell Jocasta and Oedipus about Polybus death. The messenger says that
Polybus, Oedipus presumed father, died from sickness and old age. This causes Oedipus to feel relief
from the prophecy of the gods that is proclaimed over him, which was that Oedipus would kill his

However, I disagree with Jordan that it was an unthinking decision, it seems naïve to discount
connections between legal statutes and a socially desired goal. Parent s assertion that laws were placed
strategically to subjugate and eventually perpetually enslave seems reasonable. Thus obligatorily
prejudice and feelings of superiority had to exist prior to the active pursuit of subjugation. It seems
immaterial whether institutionalized slavery began immediately or later, because the action of
acquiring a person for sale or servitude requires an establishment of superiority and inferiority. This
dynamic had to exist from slavery s beginning.

Drug Trafficking And Its Effects On America
In regard to Latin America, this area is a crucial geographical zone for drug trafficking and production.
Due to the location, the drug trade has found its perfect home, vast mountains and forests enable huge
farms to produce and ship drugs to any region they want. Whether it is Colombia, Peru or one of the
many countries found to be in this vast collection of drug trafficking, it is apparent that they all share
similar geographies that allow the trade to continue. As a result of this, countries in this region have
been subjugated to many imperialistic like efforts to eradicate this growing issue, regardless of
involvement. Through the use of diplomacy and past military intervention, the U.S. and other
countries have tried to keep a grip on the ever growing drug ring surrounding this area. Unfortunately,
it has become evident that the effort given by the U.S. is not enough to combat this ever growing and
secure market. Drug trafficking first started to show itself in Latin America during the years from the
1960s to 1970s, when the use of drugs began to become more popular throughout the youth of this
period ( Crandal ). During this time, the people in these exporting countries started to see a large
growth in the revenues brought upon by the trafficking, and rural communities began to supply more
and more drugs, beginning with Marijuana, but eventually becoming a much larger exporter of
