But what is particularly found problematic is the apparent contradiction in the definition of magical
realism as an amalgamation of realism and fantasy such as The Metamorphosis (129).
Many things are fantasy, but now since I have learned what magical realism is, I see magical
realism in The Metamorphosis. I feel that waking up and being something else is magical and a
person hearing his family talking and being scared to leave his room is magical. Also, he had to
learn how to walk differently, lie differently, and even eat differently. I feel that part is more
magical than fantastic.
The Metamorphosis did have some realist elements as well. Before Gregor Samsa turned into an
insect, he was a young traveling salesman who lived with and financially supported his parents
and his young sister. Another realist element I found was that it is true that insects do not like the
same food we eat. Gregor s food habits changed. Even though he was an insect, his sister still
found the time to feed him, and when she fed him, she gave him bread and milk because that was
his favorite. When Gregor went to eat it as an insect, he no longer liked the taste. He began eating
scraps. He also liked staying under the furniture. All insects like to hide, and even though he went

narrator s family tree, I insist the meaning transcends that, the poem isn t just about how the tree
represents family and the narrator s willingness to do anything to keep it, but about how holding

anything else, effectively blinding herself to any other opportunities. To be free of the tree is to

A Study On The Twi Program
The TWI program was for 8 hours a day for 200 days, while comparison classrooms operated 6
hours a day for 180 days. Teachers did not differ significantly in their backgrounds or training,
although TWI teachers were more likely to have a Master s degree (30% to 6% and be bilingual
(50% to 25%). The TWI program had a week of English by teacher and assistant, and a week of
Spanish by a Spanish teacher and assistant, with both sets collaborating to plan curricula and
assessment. The major challenge of the study was that it was difficult to ensure that literacy tests in
English and Spanish were entirely comparable. Also, some of the tests used were experimental and
turned out to be too difficult for most children, including in post test. Neither program was pure
immersion because the children were given languagesupport on the side.
The results were positive and showed advancement for all children, with Spanish language
children in TWI benefiting the most in comparison to their peers in the EI group. Specifically, the
Spanish language children improved in their receptive vocabulary , with effect sizes of over half a
deviation. TWI s effect of producing greater gains in receptive language than in expressive was
considered by the authors to be one of the most significant findings of the study, and it was thought

There are many of these examples, but one that sticks out in the media and in my own attention
is the treatment of women in many Islamic countries. There are many laws in place to oppress
the views and rights of the women inhabiting these countries, and failure to abide by them means
imprisonment and even death. These punishments are considered by many to be the status quo
of an unjust law because of the one sidedness and prejudice of the law. These show that the laws
are unjust while still remaining legal. These forms of oppression are used widely in a
