Dieting Crazes In America
Along with body dissatisfaction, dieting crazes have been a new phenomenon that have spawned from
media s ideal body image. The dieting and weight loss industry makes approximately sixty billion
dollars annually (Williams). That is twenty million dollars more than it made just twenty years ago
(Iggers). This is because sixty seven percent of women are trying to lose weight. The sad part is that
fifty three of these women are a healthy body weight ( Survey ). This increase in the past twenty years
has everything to do with the plethora of media influences in everyday lives. It has created dieting
crazes that are extremely lacking in nutrients and almost inhumane. Juicing has become the newest fad
since stars like Nicole Richie and Gwyneth Paltrow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem is, there is very little nutrients in this diet. No proteins, no complex carbohydrates, and
no healthy fats, Just what you can get out of a juiced fruit or vegetable which still has less nutrients
than a whole one. A person will definitely lose weight while on this diet because they are practically
starving themselves. The American Journal of medicine has even published a study that shows oxalate
induced acute kidney failure caused by juicing and yet people still juice (Gonzalez). The juicing fad
started with celebrities and spread through media to woman who strive to look like the celebrities
endorsing the crazy diet. Juicing is one of many diets prevalent in the media right now and that
another issue. There are so many different diets showing up in magazines, on television, or on social
media that people are setting themselves up for an eating disorder. Starting with simple diets like low
fat, no fat, low carb, no carb, vegetarian, vegan, and escalating to The Paleolithic Diet, gluten free,
diet pills, and the Atkins Diet, people do not know what to eat. The media has influenced all these
diets and the people who fall for them are trying to look like the celebrities that endorse them. It a

The Natural Development Of Banana Ripening Essay
Introduction Banana ripening is characterized as the process in which starch breaks down into sugar,
acid is neutralized, aromatic compounds are formed from larger organic molecules, softening occurs
due to a decrease in pectin concentration, and, finally, a change in color from the loss of chlorophyll
and its green pigment. This natural development is due to a single organic gas: ethylene. As this
hydrocarbon is produced by the fruit various enzymes are produced, catalyzing the previously stated
reactions and ripening the banana.1 Qualitatively, banana ripening can be measured by the color of the
peel, degree of hardness, and aromatic properties for this is an indicator of the level of ethylene
exposure and state of ripeness A banana unexposed to a significant amount of ethylene has a green
peel. This is due to the high concentration of chlorophyll; however, as this banana comes in contact
with more ethylene enzymes break down chlorophyll into other various compounds (carotenoids,
anthocyanin, etc.) with different pigments.2 Likewise, as ripening continues, pectin is broken down by
pectinase, softening the banana. Finally, banana ripeness can be determined by the aroma, for an
unripe banana is lacking the fragrant esters associated with a banana that has been exposed to
sufficient amounts of ethylene.1 These methods are general recognized as reliable indicators of banana
maturity; however, scientific analysis can also be conducted on the banana to determine the degree of

Doe Season Symbolism
Doe Season is a short story written by David Michael Kaplan. David Michael Kaplan was born in
1946 in New York. He started his writing career in 1985 with his first novel Skating in the Dark, and
wrote Doe Season in 1987. He is identified in the writing community as a magical realist and receives
most of his influence from magical realist elements like interweaving magical elements with detailed,
realistically drawn everyday setting. Kaplan wrote this book as a coming of age story of a girl starting
to become a woman. This is a critical analysis of the short story Doe Season by observing and
identifying different key elements within the story. The main characters in this story are Andy, Andy s
father, and Andy s mother. Andy is a young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The title Doe Season could be translated to the female time. Doe meaning female and season meaning
time. The female time is symbolic because it refers to Andy and how it is almost the end of her
innocence, or childhood, and the beginning of becoming a women. Another piece of important
symbolism in this story are the woods. To Andy, the woods symbolize safety. Andy knows the woods
and is comfortable in the woods. When Andy is running in the woods from the dead doe she start to
hear the sounds of the ocean, this symbolizes her leaving her innocence, and her comfort and going
towards womanhood, the unknown that is the ocean. The ocean reminds her of her mother when her
top came off in the ocean and she saw her mother s breasts. She knows that one day she will also have
breast like her mothers and will become a women, but this is unknown, scary area for Andy. During
the second night after Andy shot the doe, she has a dream. In her dream there is an instance where
Andy pressed deeper, through flesh and muscle and sinew, until her whole hand and more was inside
the wound and she had found the doe s heart . This symbolizes the guilt that Andy has from shooting
the doe. The doe symbolizes Andy s innocence and by killing the doe she feels that innocence is gone
and that is transitioning into adulthood. She come to this scary realization this near the end of the story

Mexico s Drug And Human Trafficking
Human and Drug trafficking are huge global problems and it affects millions or people, even if they
do not know about it. Mexico s drug and human trafficking are huge issues, and people tend to
different methods in how the problems should be solved. However, the main reason in why these two
things are such an issue is all because of money. They both bring in major profits and benefits into
Mexico and those in charge of this industry, it also brings in revenue into the United States for those
that a part of these two cartels. Both the Drug Cartel and those in power of the Human Trafficking
concerns, keep this things going because of the politicians that are placed into power of their regions.
Many people keep saying that they should fix what is happening; however the problem is much more
difficult than that. Many people in the United States keep stating that the issue is only a Mexican
problem. Mexico s government has stated that there primary goal is get rid of the drug cartels in their
country and that it is the United States hope to prevent the drug cartels from coming into their country.
Drug trafficking can also be explained as the war on drug which was coined by Richard Nixon
(Calderon, 1). This coin is an important matter to know because it explains how people actually feel
about these things. However, there are many other countries that do smuggle in drugs into America;
but due to the fact Mexico and America share a border the problem is much bigger. Especially

Humoral Speech In Conan OBrien s Speech
Though some of you may see me as a celebrity, you should know that I once sat where you sit.
Literally. Late last night I snuck out here and sat in every seat.
Graduates of Dartmouth College were granted a pass from the typical clichés of commencement

lives. Though littered with comical jabs at the college and its graduates, O Brien s address offered the
audience candid life advice based on his successes and failures throughout his career. O Brien
employed his humor to break the ice to the class of 1,782 students, commending them for their
achievements that only 92 percent of Americans their age will ever know: a college diploma . He ...

Poverty, Education, Sanitation, Malnutrition, And Child...
There are been a consistent campaign to improve conditions around the world in regards to poverty,
education, sanitation, hunger, and child mortality. Several non government organization (NGO),
charitable establishments, and non profit corporations work to advance impoverished countries and
decrease disparities. These agencies partner with local, national, and international institutions to
promote their particular health or educational agenda. Although, these establishments face financial
shortfalls at times, they have managed to improve condition around the world in some areas. Bolivia is
a country with many complex cultures, geography obstacles, several indigenous populations, a history
of political turmoil, and poverty. It is one of the poorest countries in South America. Bolivia faces
many third world problems with poverty being the biggest factor for many of these issues. There are
alarming figures with ratios that vary from six out of ten to nine out of ten live in poverty or extreme
poverty in Bolivia (Castillo Carniglia, Weisstaub, Aguiree, Aguilar, Araya 2010).
The United Nations has developed Millennium goals to eliminate inequalities around the world. One
of the intentions is to improve quality of life by extinguishing hunger and poverty globally. The
purpose of this paper is to probe how poverty effects nutrition in the country of Bolivia and discuss
possible strategies to effect change for better outcomes.

How Tuition Fees Deter The Attendance Essay
Increased enrollment and a decreased fiscal focus by governments on post secondary education has
led to the ongoing inflation of tuition rates in Canada. By comparing countries with exorbitantly high
tuition rates and countries with free education, the efficacy of the Canadian system can be studied.
This paper will explore how tuition fees deter the attendance to university by low income and
international students, and address the need to restructure our economically outdated post secondary
system.
Post secondary education is highly valued in Canada. Statistics Canada (2016) recorded that 64.1% of
Canadians between the ages of 25 to 64 possess some form of post secondary education, a percentage
that has been steadily increasing throughout the years. However, this influx in enrollment for higher
education has greatly affected the way in which public institutions are funded. Historically, Canadian
colleges have been funded largely through federal and provincial government grants, yet following the
recession in the 1970s, funding was seriously impacted as the government was forced to focus their
fiscal funding in higher priority areas (Jones, 2014). In addition, health and education were grouped
together in federal allowances to the provincial government in 1995, resulting in more than 4.5 billion
dollars between 1995 and 1997 (Fisher, et al, 2006). This forced provincial governments to reevaluate
and reform their systems, with many provinces choosing to decrease funding to

Big Fridge Short Story
Big Fridge Yesterday was the day that everything went wrong in the house. I woke up from a
terrifying dream about Jason Shoe stealing some of my food. The reason that this was so scary is that
to do it, he snipped my cord using Bennett Scissors. If that were to actually happen, I would be put
into a coma instantly. Chase Duct Tape would then have to tape my cords back together and my food
would be spoiled. If my food spoils then I will have to have surgery to replace my insides. This would
cost my owner lots of money. Anyways, after the dream I started getting very nervous about people
being around me. I am still scared of Bennett and won t let him come around me. If he comes into the
kitchen I spit rotten tomatoes at him so he leaves. He is so mean that he cuts the stuffing out of Jack

My Experience For My Volunteer Experience
For my volunteer experience I chose to go to YMCA which stands for Young Men s Christian
Association. Their mission is to make a healthy body, mind and spirit through their Christian
principles. Their main focus in on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The
reason I chose YMCA is because I try to live a healthy lifestyle and as that is their mission at YMCA it
will be interesting to see what I will learn when I volunteer. Before the experience I thought I would
volunteer by fundraising for a cause they support or help provide services in the gym. I also thought I
might work with customers in the front desk. I was hoping to work with the children in the sports
teams to help coach and teach them more about the sport.
I stated to the YMCA manager that I need to volunteer because it is an assignment I have for college.
She was very lenient on what I would like to do and let me choose from a plethora of options. I was
told that I will be able to switch positions throughout the day since it was for my class and it would
make it more of a learning experience for me.
The day I went in for volunteering, I was positioned as a phone attendant answering phone calls to
anyone who had questions about YMCA, I was given a packet of information to be able to answer
those questions. I answered my first call and was able to successfully help the person with their
question but I did not enjoy this position as much because it felt more like work than volunteering.

Rhetorical Analysis Lessons
Strength does not lie in numbers, but rather in accumulated experiences. Some people choose to live
in such a way that every fathomable opportunity is seized, while others bow down to grief and avoid
the gift of pleasure out of pure fear. In Sara Teasdale s poem Lessons , she lyrically explores the idea
that individuals have a great bounty of life experiences to enjoy. Life is too short and this earth is too
plentiful to not take advantage of every unusual and thrilling opportunity, including understanding and
facing our rawest emotions. Through diction and personification, Teasdale iterates that opposed to
shrinking away from moments in time that may make us uncomfortable, individuals should embrace
what they feel and what beauty this earth

Daniel O Connell s Speech Analysis
This text is a political speech that Daniel O`Connell, one of the fathers of the Irish Republic, gave at
the House of Commons in London in 1836. The aim of O Connell s speech was to get equal justice for
the Irish people as members of the British Crown, and in the same way that by that time the Scottish,
English and Welsh people already had. The majority of the Parliament s members were protestant and
reluctant to give Irish Catholics more rights than they already had.
As the time O`Connell spoke to the Parliament about the equal justice, he had already become a
member of this chamber several years ago and was successful in getting more reforms for the Irish
cause. Ireland had a parliament since the year 1297 but the British crown abolished ... Show more

He tries it using different verbs like ...will you, can you, refuse you... and trying to reach them in their
quality as well educated and wise men. He mentions the year 1825 in which the Irish people also tried
to get from the Treasury Bench emancipation and they did not get it. But he appeals emotionally to
them affirming that ...I am the living representative of those hopes... of reform.
O Connell s more emotional tone of the last paragraph means to show the Parliament his love for his
country Ireland and its unjust situation. He personifies his country by seeing himself as its friend,
servant, stave ... and also as the voice of its sentiments, but above all as the voice of all the Irish
people. Once again he repeats what he wants, justice: ... I ask you only for justice . ... .
He never leaves an amiable tone during the whole speech and does not care about the taunts as
Irishman and Papist that he can get from the members of the House. He ends but the speech very
firmly and once again with the aim to get equal justice, with the words ... I demand, I respectfully
insist: on equal justice for Ireland, on the same principle by it has been administrated to Scotland and
England. I will not take less. Refuse me that if you can

The Jungle Corruption
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair details the life of a Lithuanian immigrant named Jurgis, in the late 1800
s. In the novel, Jurgis and his family immigrate to America in order to find prosperity and follow the
American Dream . However, upon reaching reaching America, they face many trials and tribulations.
Foremost, no one in the family is able to speak English, as well as being poor immigrants that are
easily taken advantage of by society. Initially, Jurgis tries to keep his head up and tries through his
own work to succeed, but as the events of the novel unfold, we see him tore down and corrupted. The
moral corruption of Jurgis can be seen as a reflection of the environment in which he lived. In the end,
Jurgis believed that the capitalistic society that he lived in was against the common man. The Jungle
illustrates how greed and unchecked capitalism can have devastating effects on people. Capitalism
fosters greed that when left unchecked can push people to their moral and physical limits in order to
make a profit from others. This led to many people entering a cycle where they could not leave the
factories and cities because they had no way to support themselves besides working in terrible
conditions. This is illustrated in real life instances and in The Jungle. Many Americans feared that the
great industrialists were reducing freemen to wage slaves (Rise of Unions). This quote exemplifies
that even though the workers of the factories were not slaves they were

Nostalgic Memories In Yusef Komunyakaa s Facing It Essay
Nostalgic Memories In Facing It Just as farmers brand their livestock in order to claim them as their
own, humans do the same when it comes to important events. There are certain moments in one s life
when an incident is so powerful, emotionally or physically, that it leaves a mark on a person forever.
The branded symbol that is left could be positive or negative, but there is no doubt that it has caused a
wave of all encompassing feeling. And although when looking back at the past the majority of our
memories tend to be viewed with a black and white perception, it is these rare occurrences when a
certain event can be so distinct that it is like experiencing it once more. This experience that was once

His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction of
the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something that
one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time, in a
way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one has
more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents emotion
through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force, which
expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content and theme of
the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I see a booby trap s
white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me he s lost his right arm . Literary devices such as
this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary and depressing image of a
past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that Komunyakaa wants certain
words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one to concentrate on certain
thoughts: I turn that way—I m inside causes one to imagine that the main character is deep inside his
train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious that the literal meaning of the
phrase is that the character is

Baroque Research Paper
Baroque always thought to be an art period through 1600 to 1750 and the Baroque art was the
prevalent artistic style in that period. The art style was originated from Italy and related to counter
reformation. In Baroque period, artists were embraced elaborate ornamentation, dynamic, spectacular
effect, which broke through the calm, static feeling of classical art since Renaissance art period. Also,
it is an art style that absorbed lots of elements from theater, literature, and music and has a strong
relationship to the religious, which held the dominant position through the whole period. For the
Baroque paintings, instead of depicting people s lifestyle, most of them were depicting the Counter
Reformation. Figures poses in the paintings are more precise and more like opera stage poses.
Moreover, Baroque paintings always exaggerated lighting and had intense emotions. During Baroque
period, group figures are one of the most importances for the sculptures and those sculptures focused
on the dynamic movement to convey human s energy. Another important thing is that the sculptures in
this period have multiple ideal viewing angles. Besides the paintings and sculptures, Baroque style
profoundly influenced the architecture at that time. The architectures mainly focused on the bold of ...

Comparing The Oppression Of Women And A Metaphorical...
In comparing the oppression of women to a metaphorical birdcage, Marilyn Frye s essay Oppression
expands the definition of what constitutes as an oppressive act. In doing so, some would argue that her
definition allows for nearly every interaction between men and women to have some underlying sexist
tone. Others, including myself, would deny such a claim and argue that as opposed to stretching the
realms of sexism, Frye s interpretation contributes to a deeper understanding of sexism in modern
society. While it is true that Frye s metaphor could be over applied and abused, in the long term, it is
more beneficial than detrimental. Because the situation of women in the western world has improved
vastly in comparison to other societies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is my belief that the sexism in this act lied firmly in the way he chuckled, and shook his head
condescendingly at me. It was as though he were thinking to himself how cute it was that a little
woman like me to hold open the door for a strong, capable man such as himself. In laughing at this
simple, objectively polite act he confirmed the thought process behind this chivalrous act . Men hold
open the door for woman, not because it s necessarily polite, but because men subconsciously believe
women to be weak. Not only that, but consider the fact that rarely do men hold open the door for men.
This is no doubt because men consider other men to be capable of handling themselves in all manners,
especially in things as simple as holding open a door. However, this is only one side of the argument,
and without the opposing side the discussion is limited. Others would argue that holding open a door
is just that, nothing more or less. It is a polite act instilled in many people, especially those living in
the Southern areas of the United States, where politeness is particularly emphasized. It could certainly
be that is not the act that is sexist but the individual reasons as to why one opens the door for another
person. While one man may do so because he believes a woman needs unnecessary help, another may
do it because it is not an out of the way gesture. One man may laugh at the act of a woman holding
open the door for him, while another

Character Analysis Of Morris Lurie s Running Nicely
Running nicely is a short story written by Morris Lurie, about two orphan brothers: the protagonist,
Moses, a twenty two years old young man and the antagonist, Ben, his younger brother. The story is
set during the night at ten PM, in the streets in suburban Melbourne. When the two brothers are
running, Moses realizes he has difficulty accepting that Ben is getting older, and that his younger
brother is now running faster than him. The author suggests that family relationships after a loss may
result in being abnormal and can have consequences on one s development and behavior. The author
effectively conveys this theme through his use of characterization, narrative point of view and irony.
To begin, the characterization of Moses in relation with his brother Ben demonstrates how the
protagonist is struggling to be a perfect father substitute, after both parents passing away. Moses
makes Ben grow too fast by doing adult type activities, like showing him jazz music, making him
watch old movies and making him read books about war. By getting his brother learn about other
things instead of watching the TV like their neighbors, he feels proud about how [...] he has weaned
his brother, a former three hours a nigh man, off that awful habit. (2). After the death of their parents,
Moses must take the responsibility of a father, but ends up controlling Ben too much by trying to
educate him as an adult, while he is only twelve years old. By striving for perfection, Moses

their race, religion, or culture. The Book Thief, written by Marcus Zusak and narrated by death, tells
an eye opening story from the perspective of a small group of Germans who silently, secretly and
courageously opposed Nazism during the time of the Holocaust. While death is featured prominently
throughout the story, ultimately, love shines through. This is seen not only in The Book Thief, but in
everyday life. Hence, Zusak s purpose in writing The Book Thief is to expose his readers to the
exceptional, yet beautiful power of love: how love can save a person, change a person, and ultimately
be everlasting. The bond of love between individuals has the power to save lives. It supersedes the ...

Analysis Of A Lock Of Hair And A Wounded Heart
A Lock of Hair and a Wounded Heart Throughout the course of history and its literature, authors and
poets have served as messengers for the times in which they lived, whether it be about political
upheaval or social constructs or the lives of the common man. One way this was accomplished was
through satire. Alexander Pope, whom of which lived in the literary Restoration period and wrote the
poem, The Rape of the Lock, in 1714, provides a work as an excellent example of satire. He parodies
the upper classes favorite literature (epic, heroic poetry) to mock the absurdity and irrationality of the
upper class. Using the common tropes of divine intervention, hyperbole, and lofty language, a
gleefully sarcastic tone emerges to allow the reader to see through the faux seriousness regarding the
loss of a strand of hair from a noble woman. In numerous works of epic poetry and that of the classic
style, an invocation to divine spirits and gods invited a sense of vindication and importance in a work.
Works like Homer s long beloved Odyssey among others almost completely rely on divine
intervention to effectuate the plot and justify actions of either the protagonist or the antagonist. Pope
crafitly uses this common tactic in such works to parody the highbrow love for them. In the case of
Belinda, her beauty is such to rival nymphs and Aphrodite; she is incontestably divine in human form,
made of love and youth and flowering nature. That beauty, however, is soiled when a lock from

Federal Scholarships Benefits
A student can also apply for federal scholarships. These scholarships are given to students that need it
through the government. The different types of federal scholarships are as following: up to five
thousand eight hundred fifteen dollars for federal pell, up to eight hundred dollars for federal
supplemental educational opportunity grant, a minimum of one thousand five hundred dollars for
access missouri grant, and up to two thousand three hundred dollars for federal work study. If one
chooses to do work study it is approximately 10 hours a week, the pay is seven dollars sixty five cents,
and it goes straight towards his or her tuition (Missouri Baptist University). If a student is eligible for
these scholarships, it is another way to make the costly tuition seem not as expensive. These
scholarships are harder to acquire though.
Loans are nearly essential when paying for college. A student would take out a student loan and pay
the bank back in payments over the years. This allows a student to have enough money to still be able

allowed to have a loan of so much money. A freshman in college may only have a loan of nine

Immigrate To Canada
Top Reasons to Immigrate to Canada
Canada has a multicultural society and relies heavily on immigration. The aging population of Canada
makes it imminent for them to open up their gates for immigrants from other countries. According to a
research, it was found that Canadians above the age of 65 years comprise 16.1% of Canada s total
population and compared to this the population of under 15s is considerably low. This has created a
void that must be filled with the help of immigration.
Major problems pertaining to aging population are:
● Huge burden on the economy
● Less workers in the workforce
● More expenditure on pension and healthcare
● More taxes for the current workforce
The aging population of Canada has become a ticking time bomb ... Show more content on

The country also provides a right to education to its Citizens and permanent residents. Thousands of
international students migrate every year to continue their edification in one of the top notch institutes
in Canada, This means that you are not the only one who is thinking of migrating to Canada for
education.
Travel
Canada is also a great travel destination and can provide a great bang for every buck you put into your
travel. The iconic Niagara Falls is one of the most alluring sites to witness. Canada has spots for
people travelling in solitude or in a group.
Vancouver houses the hockey team vancouver canucks and is filled with places that can provide you
an exotic wining and dining experience. The SkyTrain enables travellers to to soak in the majestic
view of Canadian cities from quite a height. Some urban cities even have a bucolic setting due to the
type of architecture. There are other great spots that you can visit like Quebec, Granville islands and
so on.
Ease of Immigration
Just to reiterate my point, Canada needs immigrants and that is why the immigration process focuses
on young and skilled workers. This is quite apposite as skilled workers will be able to contribute a lot
to the economy of Canada. Canada does not just make it easy for you to migrate but for your family as

Essay on Hardships Facing the Gray Wolf Population
An eerie howl fills the air; it bellows over the darkened valley floor. A majestic show of fur and fang
dance behind a herd of deer leaping through blanketed snow. Within a second, gunshots echo; and a
fallen beauty lays unmoving, painting the snow beneath a deep red. In the past, with little
understanding and an abundance of anger, humans in North America have caused much change to the
gray wolf s life. Alterations in habitat, behavior, diet, and human measures for control have created a
multitude of hardships for the gray wolf population. Encroachment from human settlers has caused
dramatic adjustments in the gray wolf s habitat and behavior. Since the beginning of colonization in
America, the gray wolf s territories have been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These conditions forced packs of gray wolves to retreat away from their known territory into other
gray wolves habitat, causing blood soaked battles to ensue. The only alternative was for them to
change their behavior, and try to coexist with their new human company. As main food sources
diminished due to human hunting, the gray wolf found it more difficult to have a successful hunt.
Hunters began taking the wolves main food sources, which forced the wolves to expand their daily
search for prey. This caused wolves to venture near human settlements more often, looking for some
kind of nourishment. With humans and wolves vying for many of the same food sources, wolves
found slow and trusting farm animals a much easier target. Sheep and cattle were believed to be a new
staple for the gray wolf diet. Although in reality, only in very rare circumstances were livestock
hunted for meals by gray wolves. Many embellished the situation and persuaded people gray wolves
were a threat. A menace not only to livestock, but also humans; moreover that action needed to be
taken.
The fabricated lies spread by people caused many to take barbaric steps toward what they believed
necessary control of wolves. Wanting more profit for themselves, greedy hunters looked for an easy
way to get rid of competition. Using traps, hunters started catching wolves for their pelts, which they
could sell for money. Hunting wolves also

Introduction
A lava lamp (or Astro lamp) is a decorative novelty item, invented by British accountant Edward
Craven Walker in 1963. The lamp contains blobs of colored wax inside a glass vessel filled with clear
liquid; the wax rises and falls as its density changes due to heating from an incandescent light bulb
underneath the vessel. The appearance of the wax is suggestive of pāhoehoe lava, hence the name. The
lamps are designed in a variety of styles and colours.
The underlying fluid mechanics phenomenon is a form of Rayleigh Taylor instability.
The bulb is normally 25 to 40 watts. Generally it will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any tightly sealable container works, but you probably have an empty water bottle laying around
somewhere. Add oil, water, and food coloring to the bottle. Fill the bottle 3/4 of the way full with
vegetable oil, then top it off with water and about 10 drops of food coloring (or enough to make the
solution appear fairly dark). Cut an Alka Seltzer or Airborne tablet into pieces. You can either ration
the pieces to make your lava lamp last longer or add more than one piece at a time for more interesting
effects. Add pieces of the tablet to the bottle. This will cause the mixture to bubble. Repeat every time
the bubbling stops. Unfortunately, with this type of lava lamp, the effects are temporary. Put the cap
on and tip the bottle back and forth. This will cause the tiny droplets of colored water moving around
inside the oil to join together, making bigger lava squirt blobs. That s what scientists call them,
anyway. Place a strong flashlight or search light under the bottle. This will illuminate the bubbles for
maximum effect. But don t leave your bottle on top of a heated surface! Plastic will melt and you ll get
oil everywhere.

Characteristics of Various Deer Species Essay
White tailed deer, elk, and moose are all types of deer. They are ruminant mammals forming the
family Cervidae which means they grow and shed new antlers each year. These three types of deer live
in areas ranging from the wilderness, forests, brush thickets, prairie, and your backyard. While often
associated with forests, deer are an Eco tone species that can adapt to different environments in order
to survive. The white tailed deer, elk, and moose have different dietary needs ranging from tree bark to
the tender grass allowing them to live in the same community while foraging on different foods.

Female fawns may stay with their mother for two years; the males usually leave after a year. The
mature white tailed deer becomes tan or brown in the summer and grayish brown in winter. Its throat
has white on it, around its eyes and nose are white, on its stomach and on the underside of its tail are
also white. The males have antlers and can weigh between one hundred fifty and three hundred
pounds. The females do not have antlers and weigh between ninety and two hundred pounds.
Whitetails have a potential life span of eleven or twelve years, but seldom live longer than five and
half years.
Elk live in a variety of habitats, from rain forests to alpine meadows and dry desert valleys to
hardwood forests. The elk s diet in the summer through fall consists of grasses and forbs. The winter
diet consists of grasses, shrubs, tree bark and twigs. The male elk are called bulls and the females are
called cows. Elk breed in the fall and the females can produce one and very rarely two offspring.
Gestation period is about eight months and the offspring weigh between thirty three and thirty five
pounds. When the females are close to giving birth, they isolate themselves by moving away from the
herd. They will stay hidden until the calf is grown enough to get away from predators. Calves have
white spots when they are born, this seen in many species of deer, the calves will lose their spots once
the summer comes to an end. Calves are able to join

3.1 Introduction to Autonomous Cars Autonomous cars, also known as driverless cars, or self driving
cars are vehicles that can drive themselves without a human driver to control the steering,
acceleration, and braking (Thrun, 2010). They are designed to sense their surroundings with
techniques of artificial intelligence, sensors with a 360° of view, radar, and global positioning systems,
so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in self driving
mode. Advanced control systems analyze the sensory information gathered to plan the best route to the
desired destination. Obstacles and road signs are all part of the algorithm to be taken into account
ahead of time. In addition, the autonomous vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Level 2 Combined Function This level involves automation of at least two primary control functions
designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions. An example is adaptive
cruise control in combination with lane centering. Level 3 Limited Self Driving Vehicles at this level
of automation are able to operate autonomously for some portions of the journey. Transfer of control
back to the human driver happens with some warning. The Google car is an example of limited self
driving automation. Level 4 Full Self Driving The vehicle is designed to perform all safety critical
driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip without manual control at any time
during the trip. 3.2 Advantages And Limits There are many potential advantages to using a driverless
car instead of a traditional human controlled vehicle: Reduction in car accidents. Most car accidents
are caused by driver errors, but the autonomous system can monitor a broader range of sensors and
react faster than a human driver. More efficient transportation due to higher speed limit Increase in
road capacity and reduction in traffic congestion due to narrowed safety gap and intelligent parking
technology. Occupants in an autonomous car will not be constrained due to age, license, disabilities,
intoxication and other factors. Although we can benefit from the self driving cars, potential

The Importance Of Effective To Police Use Of Force
Law enforcement agencies have policies regarding use of force that need reform. There is concern for
the balance of ethical decision making by police officers. There is also an equal concern for the rights
and value of life of civilians along with those of officers. Maintaining stress free standards for
employed law enforcement is detrimental to police use of force directives. Police organizations can
prevent and correct their citizen interaction without the use of excessive force. It is imperative that a
process be found that could identify potential issues prior to use of force events occurring. Measures
can be taken early by police agencies to avoid officers initiating criminal misconduct. Police training
and development of communication techniques will provide the reform needed to subvert the idea of
an excessive use of force police culture. Logic should be administered alongside reasoning prior to the
use of any force, specifically deadly force. There is no reasonable explanation for excessive use of
force so it should be prevented instead of authorized socially and accepted. Most of the police
operations that incite negative outcomes are preventable with the implementation of appropriate
training. In the article by Gross (2017) he discusses several accounts of the excessive use of force by
police in America. Some of these accounts have changed some laws, i.e. The Supreme Court case of
Graham v. Connor (1989). The facts of the case were that a diabetic man named

African American Criminalization Analysis
In this class we have learned about mass incarceration and the criminalization of black and brown
bodies throughout U.S. history. An early example of the criminalization of brown bodies can be seen
in Los Angeles when the Spanish Crown came and deemed Native Americans as lawless and
ungovernable. Then, later in time, we see the criminalization of black bodies in the South during the
Reconstruction Era. Laws and ideology that are motivated by colonialism and settler colonialism, have
helped put more black and brown bodies in prison and exploit them for labor through convict lease
systems. The criminalization of Native Americans, Hobos, and African Americans served a political,

as well as a racialized global hierarchy and a system of punishment that criminalizes difference
(Bosworth/Flavin 13). It is evident that these populations were criminalized because they were
different and did not follow or assimilate to European culture. Incarcerating these two populations,
gave Anglo Saxons free and cheap labor in the construction of Los Angeles and many construction

Beyond Good And Evil
Moby Dick by Herman Melville sets the scene on a whaling ship, the Pequod. In addition to exploring
the horrors that occur on the ocean, the novel reflects one of the statements found in Friedrich
Nietzsche s Beyond Good and Evil: He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby
become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee. Nietzsche
claims that when one strongly despises the evil, the evil will contaminate one s mind and sense of
justice. Melville demonstrates this concept through character development. Because Captain Ahab
pursues the monster, Moby Dick, he also becomes monstrous. In the beginning of the book, Ahab
clearly sees Moby Dick as the monster. When Ahab is persuading the ... Show more content on

certain regulations; people are also loose fish free whales that have no affiliation with any ship in

Liking Is for Cowards Essay
Jonathan Franzen wrote the article, Liking is for Cowards. Go for what Hurts. This article caused
extreme interest and controversy by the topic of his argument. The purpose of Franzen writing the
article was to challenge us to get back to the true meaning of love and not being so terrified of
rejection. He feels that we had become too comfortable just liking what people expect us to and have
lost the real understanding of the word love. Franzen stated, If you dedicate your existence to being
likable, however, and if you adopt whatever cool persona is necessary to make it happen, it suggests
that you ve despaired of being loved for who you really are (Franzen, Liking is for Cowards. Go for

He wants people to step away from their technology and go out into the real world and have real world

of rejection. Franzen states, The prospect of pain generally, the pain of loss, of breakup, of death, is
what makes it so tempting to avoid love and stay safely in the world of liking. He s admitting that love
is hard and it comes with its own risks, but in the end, it is definitely worth it. Franzen discusses his
relationship to the environment to try to expand on the ethos of his writing. He wrote how in college
he developed a strong liking for the environment and the world around us. He began to be frustrated
and discouraged by all of the negatives that the world faces every single day, such as rising global
temperatures and the accumulation of garbage in the ecosystem. Eventually, he made a conscious
decision to back away from the environment, but then he found a fascination with birds. He felt a
sense of love for the birds, and ironically, this made him even more concerned about the environment
because that was the home of the birds that he had such a passion for. And here s where a curious
paradox emerged. My anger and pain and despair about the planet were only increased by my concern
for wild birds, and yet, as I

The Effect Of Strain Gauge Rosette Used For Multi Channel...
Abstract While calculating the results from the collected data, the thin plate shows non linear
behaviour such that stress does not vary linearly with strain. In theory when pressure is concentrated at
the centre of a circular plate, stress value decreases with respect to increasing radial distance from the
centre. However in this case, we see that there are two principal stresses and they behave differently
than one another. This experiment will introduce us to a new strain gauge called strain gauge rosette
used for multi channel strain measurement and other equations to calculate principal stresses and
strains in a two dimensional state. Introduction For a thin circular plate, stress and strain usually occur
in a two dimensional state. As it is difficult to measure stress, strains are instead measured in real life
practices and its corresponding stress values are calculated. The most popular measuring tool for strain
is the strain gauge. Since strain is the measure of change in displacement over the original dimension
of a structure, the measuring tool must be sensitive enough to detect that small change in
displacement. Thus, we can learn how to handle sensitive measuring equipment and ways to ensure
that the data collected is as accurate as possible and also to omit any errors that will affect the final
calculation. Besides that, we can broaden our knowledge on multi channel strain measurements
because in reality two dimensional strains are not

The Pros And Cons Of Evangelism
A mission conference held in Edinburg in 1910 became an historical marker in current evangelical
mission development. The theme of the conference was the evangelization of the world in this
generation. This conference presented the missionary task primarily as bringing people to Christ and
gathering them into churches. As it was a time of positive momentum in world history, social justice
issues arising from the world s problems were seemingly being solved by science and technology on
many fronts: in health, industry, economics, and education. In this climate of momentum, the church
projected its primary task as evangelizing the whole world.
However, the twentieth century failed to deliver on the promise of unending positive progression. ...

The missio Dei became everything God was doing in the world with or without the church. Mission
was seen as happening wherever, however, and by whomever the will of God is done on earth. This
included non Christians to whom the concept of the will of God is completely unknown or rejected.
In contrast, evangelical Protestantism has maintained that the church remains at the centre of the
mission of God. God s mission is specifically located in the church, in the redeemed people of God
and what they have been commissioned to do under the authority of Jesus with the promise of his
presence (Mt 28:18 20). Consequently, the church s mission flows from the mission of God. We are
privileged to participate in the great narrative of what God is doing throughout the world in calling
people to himself and establishing his kingdom. John Stott explains the evangelical sense of missio

  • 3. The Natural Development Of Banana Ripening Essay Introduction Banana ripening is characterized as the process in which starch breaks down into sugar, acid is neutralized, aromatic compounds are formed from larger organic molecules, softening occurs due to a decrease in pectin concentration, and, finally, a change in color from the loss of chlorophyll and its green pigment. This natural development is due to a single organic gas: ethylene. As this hydrocarbon is produced by the fruit various enzymes are produced, catalyzing the previously stated reactions and ripening the banana.1 Qualitatively, banana ripening can be measured by the color of the peel, degree of hardness, and aromatic properties for this is an indicator of the level of ethylene exposure and state of ripeness A banana unexposed to a significant amount of ethylene has a green peel. This is due to the high concentration of chlorophyll; however, as this banana comes in contact with more ethylene enzymes break down chlorophyll into other various compounds (carotenoids, anthocyanin, etc.) with different pigments.2 Likewise, as ripening continues, pectin is broken down by pectinase, softening the banana. Finally, banana ripeness can be determined by the aroma, for an unripe banana is lacking the fragrant esters associated with a banana that has been exposed to sufficient amounts of ethylene.1 These methods are general recognized as reliable indicators of banana maturity; however, scientific analysis can also be conducted on the banana to determine the degree of ... • 8. How Tuition Fees Deter The Attendance Essay Increased enrollment and a decreased fiscal focus by governments on post secondary education has led to the ongoing inflation of tuition rates in Canada. By comparing countries with exorbitantly high tuition rates and countries with free education, the efficacy of the Canadian system can be studied. This paper will explore how tuition fees deter the attendance to university by low income and international students, and address the need to restructure our economically outdated post secondary system. Post secondary education is highly valued in Canada. Statistics Canada (2016) recorded that 64.1% of Canadians between the ages of 25 to 64 possess some form of post secondary education, a percentage that has been steadily increasing throughout the years. However, this influx in enrollment for higher education has greatly affected the way in which public institutions are funded. Historically, Canadian colleges have been funded largely through federal and provincial government grants, yet following the recession in the 1970s, funding was seriously impacted as the government was forced to focus their fiscal funding in higher priority areas (Jones, 2014). In addition, health and education were grouped together in federal allowances to the provincial government in 1995, resulting in more than 4.5 billion dollars between 1995 and 1997 (Fisher, et al, 2006). This forced provincial governments to reevaluate and reform their systems, with many provinces choosing to decrease funding to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. My Experience For My Volunteer Experience For my volunteer experience I chose to go to YMCA which stands for Young Men s Christian Association. Their mission is to make a healthy body, mind and spirit through their Christian principles. Their main focus in on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The reason I chose YMCA is because I try to live a healthy lifestyle and as that is their mission at YMCA it will be interesting to see what I will learn when I volunteer. Before the experience I thought I would volunteer by fundraising for a cause they support or help provide services in the gym. I also thought I might work with customers in the front desk. I was hoping to work with the children in the sports teams to help coach and teach them more about the sport. I stated to the YMCA manager that I need to volunteer because it is an assignment I have for college. She was very lenient on what I would like to do and let me choose from a plethora of options. I was told that I will be able to switch positions throughout the day since it was for my class and it would make it more of a learning experience for me. The day I went in for volunteering, I was positioned as a phone attendant answering phone calls to anyone who had questions about YMCA, I was given a packet of information to be able to answer those questions. • 13. Daniel O Connell s Speech Analysis This text is a political speech that Daniel O`Connell, one of the fathers of the Irish Republic, gave at the House of Commons in London in 1836. The aim of O Connell s speech was to get equal justice for the Irish people as members of the British Crown, and in the same way that by that time the Scottish, English and Welsh people already had. The majority of the Parliament s members were protestant and reluctant to give Irish Catholics more rights than they already had. In the novel, Jurgis and his family immigrate to America in order to find prosperity and follow the American Dream . However, upon reaching reaching America, they face many trials and tribulations. Foremost, no one in the family is able to speak English, as well as being poor immigrants that are easily taken advantage of by society. Initially, Jurgis tries to keep his head up and tries through his own work to succeed, but as the events of the novel unfold, we see him tore down and corrupted. The moral corruption of Jurgis can be seen as a reflection of the environment in which he lived. In the end, Jurgis believed that the capitalistic society that he lived in was against the common man. The Jungle illustrates how greed and unchecked capitalism can have devastating effects on people. Capitalism fosters greed that when left unchecked can push people to their moral and physical limits in order to make a profit from others. This led to many people entering a cycle where they could not leave the factories and cities because they had no way to support themselves besides working in terrible conditions. His frequent use of techniques such as alliteration and flashback, as well as his overall construction of the poem, easily conveys the anguish and torment that comes along with remembering something that one has tried so hard to forget. Komunyakaa s use of alliteration has helped to slow down time, in a way: Phrases such as My black face fades (Line 1) take a longer time to read, and therefore, one has more time to let words sink in. Saying that the character s face is fading not only represents emotion through word choice and diction but it allows certain words to be read with more force, which expresses the author s idea that that word has extreme importance to the overall content and theme of the piece. Komunyakaa also makes clear use of flashback throughout the poem: I see a booby trap s white flash, A white vet s image floats closer to me he s lost his right arm . Literary devices such as this one provides evidence towards the general tone of the poem: a dreary and depressing image of a past incident. The way the poem is constructed is also confirmation that Komunyakaa wants certain words and phrases to be prominent. His use of enjambment forces one to concentrate on certain thoughts: I turn that way—I m inside causes one to imagine that the main character is deep inside his train of thought; however, when reading the next line it is obvious that the literal meaning of the phrase is that the character is ... The art style was originated from Italy and related to counter reformation. In Baroque period, artists were embraced elaborate ornamentation, dynamic, spectacular effect, which broke through the calm, static feeling of classical art since Renaissance art period. Also, it is an art style that absorbed lots of elements from theater, literature, and music and has a strong relationship to the religious, which held the dominant position through the whole period. For the Baroque paintings, instead of depicting people s lifestyle, most of them were depicting the Counter Reformation. Figures poses in the paintings are more precise and more like opera stage poses. Moreover, Baroque paintings always exaggerated lighting and had intense emotions. During Baroque period, group figures are one of the most importances for the sculptures and those sculptures focused on the dynamic movement to convey human s energy. In comparing the oppression of women to a metaphorical birdcage, Marilyn Frye s essay Oppression expands the definition of what constitutes as an oppressive act. In doing so, some would argue that her definition allows for nearly every interaction between men and women to have some underlying sexist tone. Others, including myself, would deny such a claim and argue that as opposed to stretching the realms of sexism, Frye s interpretation contributes to a deeper understanding of sexism in modern society. It was as though he were thinking to himself how cute it was that a little woman like me to hold open the door for a strong, capable man such as himself. In laughing at this simple, objectively polite act he confirmed the thought process behind this chivalrous act . Men hold open the door for woman, not because it s necessarily polite, but because men subconsciously believe women to be weak. Not only that, but consider the fact that rarely do men hold open the door for men. This is no doubt because men consider other men to be capable of handling themselves in all manners, especially in things as simple as holding open a door. However, this is only one side of the argument, and without the opposing side the discussion is limited. Others would argue that holding open a door is just that, nothing more or less. It is a polite act instilled in many people, especially those living in the Southern areas of the United States, where politeness is particularly emphasized. It could certainly be that is not the act that is sexist but the individual reasons as to why one opens the door for another person. • 18. Character Analysis Of Morris Lurie s Running Nicely Running nicely is a short story written by Morris Lurie, about two orphan brothers: the protagonist, Moses, a twenty two years old young man and the antagonist, Ben, his younger brother. The story is set during the night at ten PM, in the streets in suburban Melbourne. When the two brothers are running, Moses realizes he has difficulty accepting that Ben is getting older, and that his younger brother is now running faster than him. The author suggests that family relationships after a loss may result in being abnormal and can have consequences on one s development and behavior. The author effectively conveys this theme through his use of characterization, narrative point of view and irony. To begin, the characterization of Moses in relation with his brother Ben demonstrates how the protagonist is struggling to be a perfect father substitute, after both parents passing away. Moses makes Ben grow too fast by doing adult type activities, like showing him jazz music, making him watch old movies and making him read books about war. • 22. Analysis Of A Lock Of Hair And A Wounded Heart A Lock of Hair and a Wounded Heart Throughout the course of history and its literature, authors and poets have served as messengers for the times in which they lived, whether it be about political upheaval or social constructs or the lives of the common man. One way this was accomplished was through satire. Alexander Pope, whom of which lived in the literary Restoration period and wrote the poem, The Rape of the Lock, in 1714, provides a work as an excellent example of satire. He parodies the upper classes favorite literature (epic, heroic poetry) to mock the absurdity and irrationality of the upper class. Using the common tropes of divine intervention, hyperbole, and lofty language, a gleefully sarcastic tone emerges to allow the reader to see through the faux seriousness regarding the loss of a strand of hair from a noble woman. In numerous works of epic poetry and that of the classic style, an invocation to divine spirits and gods invited a sense of vindication and importance in a work. Works like Homer s long beloved Odyssey among others almost completely rely on divine intervention to effectuate the plot and justify actions of either the protagonist or the antagonist. Pope crafitly uses this common tactic in such works to parody the highbrow love for them. In the case of Belinda, her beauty is such to rival nymphs and Aphrodite; she is incontestably divine in human form, made of love and youth and flowering nature. That beauty, however, is soiled when a lock from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Female fawns may stay with their mother for two years; the males usually leave after a year. The mature white tailed deer becomes tan or brown in the summer and grayish brown in winter. Its throat has white on it, around its eyes and nose are white, on its stomach and on the underside of its tail are also white. The males have antlers and can weigh between one hundred fifty and three hundred pounds. The females do not have antlers and weigh between ninety and two hundred pounds. Whitetails have a potential life span of eleven or twelve years, but seldom live longer than five and half years. Elk live in a variety of habitats, from rain forests to alpine meadows and dry desert valleys to hardwood forests. The elk s diet in the summer through fall consists of grasses and forbs. The winter diet consists of grasses, shrubs, tree bark and twigs. The male elk are called bulls and the females are called cows. Elk breed in the fall and the females can produce one and very rarely two offspring. Gestation period is about eight months and the offspring weigh between thirty three and thirty five pounds. When the females are close to giving birth, they isolate themselves by moving away from the herd. They will stay hidden until the calf is grown enough to get away from predators. Calves have white spots when they are born, this seen in many species of deer, the calves will lose their spots once the summer comes to an end. Calves are able to join ... • 30. International Highway Traffic Safety Administration 3.1 Introduction to Autonomous Cars Autonomous cars, also known as driverless cars, or self driving cars are vehicles that can drive themselves without a human driver to control the steering, acceleration, and braking (Thrun, 2010). They are designed to sense their surroundings with techniques of artificial intelligence, sensors with a 360° of view, radar, and global positioning systems, so that the driver is not expected to constantly monitor the roadway while operating in self driving mode. Advanced control systems analyze the sensory information gathered to plan the best route to the desired destination. Obstacles and road signs are all part of the algorithm to be taken into account ahead of time. In addition, the autonomous vehicles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Level 2 Combined Function This level involves automation of at least two primary control functions designed to work in unison to relieve the driver of control of those functions. An example is adaptive cruise control in combination with lane centering. Level 3 Limited Self Driving Vehicles at this level of automation are able to operate autonomously for some portions of the journey. Transfer of control back to the human driver happens with some warning. The Google car is an example of limited self driving automation. Level 4 Full Self Driving The vehicle is designed to perform all safety critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip without manual control at any time during the trip. 3.2 Advantages And Limits There are many potential advantages to using a driverless car instead of a traditional human controlled vehicle: Reduction in car accidents. Most car accidents are caused by driver errors, but the autonomous system can monitor a broader range of sensors and react faster than a human driver. More efficient transportation due to higher speed limit Increase in road capacity and reduction in traffic congestion due to narrowed safety gap and intelligent parking technology. Occupants in an autonomous car will not be constrained due to age, license, disabilities, intoxication and other factors. Although we can benefit from the self driving cars, potential ... • 31. The Importance Of Effective To Police Use Of Force Law enforcement agencies have policies regarding use of force that need reform. There is concern for the balance of ethical decision making by police officers. There is also an equal concern for the rights and value of life of civilians along with those of officers. Maintaining stress free standards for employed law enforcement is detrimental to police use of force directives. Police organizations can prevent and correct their citizen interaction without the use of excessive force. It is imperative that a process be found that could identify potential issues prior to use of force events occurring. Measures can be taken early by police agencies to avoid officers initiating criminal misconduct. Police training and development of communication techniques will provide the reform needed to subvert the idea of an excessive use of force police culture. Logic should be administered alongside reasoning prior to the use of any force, specifically deadly force. There is no reasonable explanation for excessive use of force so it should be prevented instead of authorized socially and accepted. Most of the police operations that incite negative outcomes are preventable with the implementation of appropriate training. In the article by Gross (2017) he discusses several accounts of the excessive use of force by police in America. Some of these accounts have changed some laws, i.e. The Supreme Court case of Graham v. Connor (1989). The facts of the case were that a diabetic man named ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. African American Criminalization Analysis In this class we have learned about mass incarceration and the criminalization of black and brown bodies throughout U.S. history. An early example of the criminalization of brown bodies can be seen in Los Angeles when the Spanish Crown came and deemed Native Americans as lawless and ungovernable. Then, later in time, we see the criminalization of black bodies in the South during the Reconstruction Era. Laws and ideology that are motivated by colonialism and settler colonialism, have helped put more black and brown bodies in prison and exploit them for labor through convict lease systems. The criminalization of Native Americans, Hobos, and African Americans served a political, social and economic purpose which helped colonialism and settler ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hobo did not want to conform to settler colonialism, in attempting to permanently reside in Native land, which led to them being outcasts in society. African Americans were ignored and attacked for trying to integrate in society. It is evident that colonialism has played in the social construction of race as well as a racialized global hierarchy and a system of punishment that criminalizes difference (Bosworth/Flavin 13). It is evident that these populations were criminalized because they were different and did not follow or assimilate to European culture. Incarcerating these two populations, gave Anglo Saxons free and cheap labor in the construction of Los Angeles and many construction projects in the South. This was useful to colonialism because Anglo Saxons and Spaniards could take advantage of their free labor and keeping them away from them while excluding them from their ... • 33. Beyond Good And Evil Moby Dick by Herman Melville sets the scene on a whaling ship, the Pequod. In addition to exploring the horrors that occur on the ocean, the novel reflects one of the statements found in Friedrich Nietzsche s Beyond Good and Evil: He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee. Nietzsche claims that when one strongly despises the evil, the evil will contaminate one s mind and sense of justice. Melville demonstrates this concept through character development. Because Captain Ahab pursues the monster, Moby Dick, he also becomes monstrous. In the beginning of the book, Ahab clearly sees Moby Dick as the monster. When Ahab is persuading the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the crew members pursue the monster, they gradually develop some monstrous qualities, especially Ahab, who turns demonic in the end. Additionally, Ishmael claims that humans are fairly similar to whales. He asks, And what are you, reader, but a Loose Fish and a Fast Fish, too (435). He claims that the way everyone in the society operates is similar to how whale ships treat whales. In a grander sense, the society is the whaler, and humans are the whales. People are fast fish whales claimed by a particular ship because they are controlled by certain regulations; people are also loose fish free whales that have no affiliation with any ship in particular because the principles of liberty and the individual rights are established on the basis of the concept of being loose. The purpose of Franzen writing the article was to challenge us to get back to the true meaning of love and not being so terrified of rejection. He feels that we had become too comfortable just liking what people expect us to and have lost the real understanding of the word love. Franzen stated, If you dedicate your existence to being likable, however, and if you adopt whatever cool persona is necessary to make it happen, it suggests that you ve despaired of being loved for who you really are (Franzen, Liking is for Cowards. He wants people to step away from their technology and go out into the real world and have real world experiences. He wants people to take risks, but most of our world is afraid of that, because of the fear of rejection. Franzen states, The prospect of pain generally, the pain of loss, of breakup, of death, is what makes it so tempting to avoid love and stay safely in the world of liking. He s admitting that love is hard and it comes with its own risks, but in the end, it is definitely worth it. Franzen discusses his relationship to the environment to try to expand on the ethos of his writing. He wrote how in college he developed a strong liking for the environment and the world around us. He began to be frustrated and discouraged by all of the negatives that the world faces every single day, such as rising global temperatures and the accumulation of garbage in the ecosystem. Eventually, he made a conscious decision to back away from the environment, but then he found a fascination with birds. He felt a sense of love for the birds, and ironically, this made him even more concerned about the environment because that was the home of the birds that he had such a passion for. And here s where a curious paradox emerged. My anger and pain and despair about the planet were only increased by my concern for wild birds, and yet, as I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Effect Of Strain Gauge Rosette Used For Multi Channel... Abstract While calculating the results from the collected data, the thin plate shows non linear behaviour such that stress does not vary linearly with strain. In theory when pressure is concentrated at the centre of a circular plate, stress value decreases with respect to increasing radial distance from the centre. However in this case, we see that there are two principal stresses and they behave differently than one another. This experiment will introduce us to a new strain gauge called strain gauge rosette used for multi channel strain measurement and other equations to calculate principal stresses and strains in a two dimensional state. Introduction For a thin circular plate, stress and strain usually occur in a two dimensional state. As it is difficult to measure stress, strains are instead measured in real life practices and its corresponding stress values are calculated. The most popular measuring tool for strain is the strain gauge. Since strain is the measure of change in displacement over the original dimension of a structure, the measuring tool must be sensitive enough to detect that small change in displacement. Thus, we can learn how to handle sensitive measuring equipment and ways to ensure that the data collected is as accurate as possible and also to omit any errors that will affect the final calculation. Besides that, we can broaden our knowledge on multi channel strain measurements because in reality two dimensional strains are not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Pros And Cons Of Evangelism A mission conference held in Edinburg in 1910 became an historical marker in current evangelical mission development. The theme of the conference was the evangelization of the world in this generation. This conference presented the missionary task primarily as bringing people to Christ and gathering them into churches. As it was a time of positive momentum in world history, social justice issues arising from the world s problems were seemingly being solved by science and technology on many fronts: in health, industry, economics, and education. In this climate of momentum, the church projected its primary task as evangelizing the whole world. However, the twentieth century failed to deliver on the promise of unending positive progression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This included non Christians to whom the concept of the will of God is completely unknown or rejected. In contrast, evangelical Protestantism has maintained that the church remains at the centre of the mission of God. God s mission is specifically located in the church, in the redeemed people of God and what they have been commissioned to do under the authority of Jesus with the promise of his presence (Mt 28:18 20). Consequently, the church s mission flows from the mission of God. The wave of demonstrations, uprisings and revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East has presented the United States with a complex set of diplomatic problems. While a key component of U.S. foreign policy is promoting and supporting democracy, it is vital to U.S. interests that the Middle East remains relatively stable. A truly democratic Arab world is a new concept, and is one that has yet to show its true colors. Shortly after the protests began in Tunisia, a wave of protests and demonstrations swept over the Arab world, from Algeria to Yemen, with few countries being exempt from the movement. Leaders of wealthier countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain, offered economic concessions to stave off unrest. Other leaders offered minor political concessions. Yet the protests continue. The Egyptian Revolution, which began with protests on January 25, 2011 and lasted for 18 days, became a media sensation watched worldwide. Not only conventional media, but social media as well. Social media played an unprecedented and important role in Egypt, changing the face of revolutions forever. Unlike Tunisia, a marginal actor in the region, Egypt is the most populous, and one could argue, the most important country in the Middle East, at least in terms of maintaining stability. The U.S., which had backed the Egyptian government militarily since 1979 and had friendly relations with Mubarak, was faced with tough diplomatic decisions.
