(To synthesize and submit Benzanilide from aniline)

PROCEDURE
Place 2.6 g (2.5 ml) of aniline and 25 ml of 10% aqueous sodium hydroxide in an
iodine flask and then add 3.5 ml (4.3 gm) of benzoyl and shake vigorously for 10
minutes.
Heat is evolved benzoyl derivative separates as a white powder.
When the reaction is complete i.e. when the odor of benzoyl chloride no longer can
be detected (smell cautiously). Make sure that reaction mixture is alkaline. Dilute it
with 10 of water.
Fitter off the product with suction on a small Buchner funnel, break up the mass (if
necessary),wash well with water and drain.
Recrystallize from hot alcohol (methylated spirit), filter the hot solution through hot
water funnel or through a warm Buchner funnel.
Collect the crystals which are separated and dry in the air or hot air oven.
Report the yield and melting point.
