Pros and Cons of Being a Vegetarian
Vegetarians are defined as those who do not eat poultry, fish and meat. Strict vegetarians or vegans exclude all animal products from their daily meals, such as honey, eggs, milk, wool and cheese (Craig 2009). Vegetarianism, the theory and practice adopted by vegetarians, can be traced back to the ancient Greece and ancient India, which stemmed from the philosophy of non-violence towards animals voluntarily (Craig 2009). Currently, over 1.4% of the American population has adopted the vegetarian lifestyle, and vegan diets have become increasingly popular among youth and teenagers. However, with the improvement of the quality of life, people more and more care about their healthy diet; the society is filled with supportive voices and protesting voices towards vegetarianism, especially when relevant to human health and the environmental sustainability.
Choosing a vegetarian diet could result in lack of vitamins and cholesterol, and develop diseases. People protesting the idea of following a vegetarian lifestyle and excluding meat, poultry and fish from diets (even all animal products) believe that this is a dangerous move that can easily trigger imbalanced nutritional intakes and the consequential damage of health. In the vegetarian lifestyle, diets are plant-based. Inappropriate and unwise selection of vegetarian diets are associated with many problems and risks. The most reported problem is the insufficient intakes of vitamin D, protein, calcium, iron, long-chain n–3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid and so on. Among them, Craig (2009) pointed out that vegetarians sometimes lack DHA and EPA that are important for “cardiovascular health as well as eye and brain functions”. Key, Appleby & Rosell (2006) investigated the cholesterol level of 5000 vegetarians and found that compared with non-vegetarians, they had low cholesterol level, lower than the recommended level of 200 by the American Heart Association. Schatz et al. (2001) also studied on the cholesterol levels of over 3000 male subjects aged 71-93 years, showing that the group with low cholesterol levels below 200 had significantly higher level of mortality. They further pointed out that extremely low cholesterol levels may lead to an early death. This reflected the risks of following vegetarian or vegan diets. Moreover, it is also reported that vegetarians have higher incidence rate of colorectal cancer than non-vegetarians by 39%, and have higher incidence rate of lower bone mineral density disease (Schatz et al. 2001). Vegetarians are also exposed to threats of insufficient metabolism and arteriosclerosis (Li 2011). All these side effects of a vegetarian lifestyle are preventing people from supporting vegetarians.
It looks like there are some disadvantages of being vegetarian, however, non-vegetarian group threated form health problem, high cholesterol and overweight and other diseases. If vegetarians follow correct and reco ...

Mindfulness may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity by reducing stress and improving overall lifestyle habits.
Slide 5: Impact of Mindfulness on Relationships
Mindfulness can help us better understand others and improve communication, leading to healthier relationships.
By focusing on the present moment and being fully attentive, mindfulness helps build stronger and more authentic connections with others.
Mindfulness teaches us how to be present for others in difficult times, leading to increased compassion and understanding.
Slide 6: Mindfulness Techniques and Practices
Focusing on the breath and mindful breathing can be a simple way to enter a state of mindfulness.
Body scan meditation involves focusing on different parts of the body, paying attention to any sensations and feelings.
Practicing mindful walking and eating involves consciously focusing on each step or bite, with full attention to sensory experiences.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. Appropriately planned vegetarian diets are now
recognized by many, including American Dietetic
Association, as being nutritionally adequate and
providing healthful benefits in the prevention
and treatment of chronic diseases.
5. 1) In African – Americans, the frequent
consumption of nuts, fruits and green salads was
associated with 35-44% lower risk of overall
mortality.
2) Cancer protection: A major report published
by the World Cancer Research Fund in 1997
recommended that we lower our risk of cancer
by choosing predominantly plant based diet
rich in a variety of vegetables and fruits,
legumes and minimally processed starchy
staple foods.
6. 3) Intake of grilled , cured and smoked meats and
fish should be limited because these methods
of preparing meat produces polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocyclic
amines which are carcinogenic.
Over 200 studies have revealed that a
regular consumption of fruits and
vegetables provide significant protection
against cancer at many sites.
7. 4) About 3 dozen plant foods have been identified as
possessing cancer protective properties.
These include, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli,
sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers,
grapes, berries, soya beans, brown rice, oats,
whole wheat, many nuts, ginger, turmeric,
oregano, basil and many more…
8. These foods contain cancer protective
phytochemicals which alter the metabolic
pathways and hormonal actions that are
associated with the development of cancer.
They stimulate the immune system and have
antioxidant activity.
9. 5) Giving up meat helps purge the body of
toxins mainly pesticides, environmental
pollutants, preservatives, that overload our
systems and cause illness.
6) Many flavonoids in fruits, vegetables, nuts
and whole grains have extensive biological
properties that reduce the risk of heart disease.
10. 7) In a large prospective study, fruit and vegetable
intake was found to be inversely associated
with incidence of diabetes, particularly among
women.
11. The ecosystem has been disturbed mainly due to the
following reasons:
1) 72% of all grains produced in the U.S., is fed to the
animals raised for slaughter. It takes 15
pounds of feed to get one pound of meat.
But, if the grain were directly given to the people,
there would be enough food to feed the entire
planet.
12. 2) In addition, using land for animal agriculture is inefficient
in terms of maximizing food production.
According to the journal, soil and water, one acre of land
could produce 50,000 pounds of tomatoes; 40,000 pounds
of potatoes; 30,000 pounds of carrots or just 250 pounds of
beef.
Choice is ours.
13. 3) Because of voracious appetite for fish, 39% of the
oceans’ fish species are overharvested. According to one
Food and Agriculture organization’s reports 11 out of
15 of the world’s major fishing grounds have become
depleted.
4) It takes 2500 gallons of water to produce one pound of
beef, but just 25 gallons of water to produce one pound
of wheat. Besides, it also causes water pollution.
14. A 1997 study by Senate Agriculture Committee
found that 60% of American waterways were
polluted and the major reason behind it was
animal agriculture.
The organization for economic co-operation and
development lists nitrate pollution (from
fertilizer & manure) as one of the major serious
water quality problems in Europe and the U.S.
15. According to a 2006 U.S. Initiative, the livestock
industry is one of the largest contributors to
environmental degradation worldwide.
The modern practices of raising animals for food
contributes on a massive scale to:
Deforestation
Air and water pollution
Land degradation
Loss of topsoil
Climate change
The overuse of resources including oil and water
Loss of biodiversity
16. Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
says:
“ PLEASE EAT LESS MEAT – MEAT IS A VERY CARBON
INTENSIVE COMMODITY”
17. By the simple expedient of becoming vegetarian,
we could reduce our total greenhouse gas
emission by 30% , with the land being freed
up being returned to the native forest. We
could thus extract carbon from atmosphere
equal to other 70%.
Recent evidence points methane (which is
produced in increased amounts because of the
increased animal agriculture) not carbon, is
responsible for the global warming happening
currently.
Methane is 60 times more damaging than
carbon dioxide.
18. Changing a diet is easy and can be done by a
person on a daily basis. There are many who have
switched over.
19. A non-vegetarian lifestyle implies a significant
health and medical cost.
1) The total direct medical costs in the U.S.,
attributable to meat consumption were estimated
to be $30-60 billion a year. It is caused by higher
prevalence of hypertension, heart disease,
diabetes, gall stones, obesity, food borne illness
among omnivores compared with vegetarians.
20. 2) Replacing meat, chicken, fish with vegetables and
fruits is estimated to cut food bills by an average of
$4000 per year.
3) According to Worldwatch Institute, “Massive
reductions in meat consumption in
industrial nations will ease the health
care burden while improving public
health; declining livestock herds will
take pressure off rangelands and
grainlands, allowing the agriculture
resource base to rejuvenate.”
21. “As population grows, lowering of meat consumption
worldwide will allow more efficient use of declining
per capita land and water resources, while at the same
time making grain more affordable to the world’s
chronically hungry.”
The WHO calls malnutrition “the silent emergency”
and says it is a factor in at least 10.4 million child
deaths which occur every year.
22. Cornell scientists have adviced
that U.S. could feed 800 million
people with grain that its
livestock eat.
23. Each day 22 million animals are slaughtered to
support American appetite for meat.
“ It’s a wonderful thing to be able to finish a
delicious meal, knowing that no beings have
suffered (to make it) ” says Erik Marcus, author of
Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating (McBooks Press,
Revised Edition, 2000).
24. Founder of the Animal Liberation Movement (Peter
Singer) believes that if alternative means of survival exist,
one ought to choose the option that does not cause
unnecessary harm to the animals.
Ethical vegetarians also believe that killing an animal,
like killing a human, can only be justified in extreme
circumstances and that consuming a living creature
for its enjoyable taste, convenience, or nutritional
value is not a sufficient cause to kill it.
25. PAIN:
John Webster, a Professor of Animal Husbandry at
Bristol notes:
“ People have assumed that intelligence is linked to
the ability to suffer and that because animals have
smaller brains they suffer less than humans. That is a
pathetic piece of logic; animals have the capacity to
experience pleasure and are motivated to seek it, you
only have to watch how cows and lambs both seek
and enjoy pleasure when they lie with their heads
raised to the sun on a perfect English summer’s day.
Just like humans.”
26. W.H.O. recommended the following for
PREVENTIVE HEALTH CARE:
1) Eat more fruits and vegetables, nuts and whole grains.
2) Engage in daily physical activity.
3) Replace saturated animal fats with unsaturated
vegetable oil-based fats
4) Do not smoke.
27. Dr. Allan Handysides, Director of the Church’s
department of Health Ministeries says:
“ We’d be mad to expect the entire world’s population to
suddenly embrace a vegetarian diet, but if we can
convince most to switch to a vegetarian diet twice a
week, we could make a sizeable impact and it is an
achievable goal.”
29. GEORGE BERNARD
SHAW : “While our
bodies are the living
graves of murdered
animals, how can we
expect any ideal
conditions on earth?”
30. ALBERT EINSTEIN:
“Our task must be to
widen our circle of
companion to embrace
all living creatures
including animals.”
31. SOME OTHER WELL KNOWN PERSONALITIES

LEONARDO DA VINCI
