Example of the rules:
The development tools uses backward chaining (goal-driven
reasoning) as it inference mechanism. Based on user's as well as
developer's view points, the system includes the following main
features:
• Easy for the future modification and expansion by
constructing the system based on modular approach.
• Apply the concept of usability - user-friendly and easy to use.
• Provide the facility of data modification.
What is rule-based?
Rule-based system is a set of "if-then" statements that uses a
set of assertions, to which rules on how to act upon those
assertions are created.
Construction of the Knowledge Base:
Knowledge acquired from the previous step is converted into
IF-THEN rules, before it gets coded.
Aim of the resulting system is to have all the rules in the
knowledge base evaluated until the possible outcome appears.
General form of rules:
IF x AND x AND .. 1 2 xn THEN y1 OR y2
Using this expert system, it can be very
beneficial in terms of speedier process of allocating
student placement the student, minimizing the error
and faulty assignment and thus signicantly saves
resourses.

Merit2U is a web-based system to manage merit points for students’ college
application. This system provides better merit point management where the
points are calculated automatically and electronically using web-based
application.
Problem statement:
i. Paper-based record tend to be worn-out, damage or loss
ii. Manual merit calculation tend to produced error, and unfair hostel placement
decision could be made
iii. Listing of past, present and future university events that allocate merit points
only available on physical notice boards

curricular activities anywhere they are by giving honest
and unbiased points.
• Students are also expected to give rating to the events
or programs they joined.
• With this system it is hoped that all students will be
more motivated in joining more curricular activities.
