The document discusses how to use social media for good by following your passions, making emotional connections through personal stories, and leveraging your social graph. It emphasizes that small actions online and offline can add up through the three Rs of relationship building, rewards, and reciprocity. The document encourages everyone to be generous with modest donations or small amounts of time to make a difference.
Since the beginning of the social web, marketers have been trying to figure out what it is that creates buzz online? Is it that funny viral YouTube video? Witty real-time twitter banter? A big enough budget on that Facebook video? Kylie Jenner’s instagram?
Well, I’m going to tell you today that it is NONE of those things, but it’s also NOT rocket science.
The biggest factor that will determine how quickly something travels through a network is…
I guess you’ll just have to click through the presentation to find out.
This talk was given at Social Media Camp in Victoria, BC on May 7, 2016.
Get More Out Of Your Social Media @Home @Work @LargeJay Oatway
Stop toying with social media and start making it work for you. Get more out of the time you spend on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (or any other social media site).
Grow beyond your close-knit collection of old friends, and discover thousands of like-minded people who are waiting to engage with you in conversations about the things you are most passionate about. Leverage these relationships to stay on the cutting-edge of insight and know-how.
Learn how to develop your personal media empire (and your army of followers) to pursue the things that matter most to you—personally, professionally, or even on a humanitarian scale.
Unlock the secrets to building an authoritative presence across a wide range of sites with minimal effort.
If you are going to spend time online anyway, why not convert that energy into Star Power? It’s easy when you know how, and it requires no special computer skills.
Rough ideas, perspectives and diagrams about the coolest thing since pirate radio. Yes, social media. Enjoy - but do note that this presentation works better when it's presented face to face.

Getting ahead and getting hired in social media & digitalStephen Waddington
This deck was originally created for a CIPR Summer Social workshop on personal reputation.
It looks at how you audit your online reputation, create profiles on LinkedIn and Twitter, build networks and publish content. There were case studies from people that have used social media to build their personal profile and secure jobs and a discussion about dealing with less favourable content.
Social media provides the opportunity for an individual to build a personal network like never before. It used to take a graduate several years of lunching journalists and boozy after work drinking sessions to build up a network of contacts.
But no longer: face-to-face meeting remain invaluable but now armed with Twitter anyone can build a network of journalists and over the course of a few weeks learn about their likes and dislikes. That’s one small step away from engagement and developing a relationship.
Social media is also enabling savvy individuals to build their personal reputation by showcasing their work whether that’s words, photos or video. It takes no more than 15 minutes to create a blog or an account on Flickr or YouTube to share with your network and peers.
Professional networks such as LinkedIn and personal web sites have become the modern portfolio. They’re almost certainly the first place that an employer, potential business partner or prospect will go to check you out.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

I’m a trainer - my focus is how nonprofits can use social media – and that’s photo of me teaching in Cambodia – and you’ll notice that there is a monk with megaphone next to a guy in a google t-shirt in a rural province outside a computer center. And I’m going to tell you the story
So, let me tell you how I ended up traveling to Cambodia, keynoting the first ever bloggers conference, and teaching hundreds of young cambodian college students about social media ….
I followed my passion – Two early personal blogs I kept – one was on Cambodian culture – and the other geeky – how to type in Khmer using the khmer keyboard and localized version of linux. I got lots of help from commenters – who were in Cambodia!
I got curious about Cambodian bloggers and started listening, finding and connecting. I was the Cambodian Editor in the early days of Global Voices – and connected with Tharum – who was the second most famous bloggers in Cambodia – the first being the king. One thing lead to another
I got to meet Tharum face-to-face in London at the Global Voices Summit in 2005! His first visit to the west! Video blogged his experience in Harrods – but he eventually became the Cambodian Editor for Global Voices
Which brings me back to the Cambodian Blogging Summit and the fundraising campaign – so I could sponsor the conference and get over there and teach I raised the money in a couple of days – ChipIn gave me a matching grant I started to experiment with using Twitter – had been on it for a year – and figured – what the heck. Little did I know that I was probably the first to use it for cause fundraising I was skyping with the bloggers asked them would you like me to bring as a gift from America? Schwank?
I used twitter. I asked my network for contributions, t-shirts, advice, and I thanked them.
And more t-shirts arrived at my door …
When I putting together the workshop on video blogging- I reached out to video bloggers list – and they suggested I take camera kits. Ryanne Hodson contributed copies of her book, and Raymond purchased four used kiddie cams from Ebay for $5 a piece.
Tools come and go, but the Three Rs Sustain
Mean Lux emailed to let me know that they had taken the cameras up to a Youth Festival and Training in a remote corner of Cambodia called Pursat! Viirak (the guy behind the stickered laptop ) and Be Chantra were there to help. Mean Lux wrote a blog post , but it is in Khmer can't translate fully. May Mean Lux will drop a comment in english?
So follow your passion

As a personal fundraiser, I ask my friends, readers, etc to help me because I care about this cause They – the donors – help me out because they care about me directly – we have a relationship – or through a shared experience Let me share with you how my 30 second pitch ..
Our family cares about Cambodia, it’s in our hearts because we adopted our children from there ..
That’s my son, Harry, and my daughter Sara when they first arrived in the Sharing Foundation’s orphanage ..
This is what they look like now. They have all the benefits of growing up here in the US – enough to eat, healthcare, a good education, etc. They are lucky, but I always …
But there are many children in Cambodia who do not have this opportunity.
It was not just my stories, but I gave a way a lot of t-shirts – so many that I could give them to the young people helped by the Sharing Foundation’s programs – the orphanage, education, computer lab – Each t-shirt was a story – not just my story – but that of a donor – and how a child helped by the sharing’s foundation’s programs.
That’s leng sopharath on the lower right – that’s the college student that my network has helped support.

One of the best quotes of the day came from Arianna Huffington who said, "To be generous, practice generosity." She shared some powerful stories from the heart, and also mentioned that we shouldn't think we're too small to make a difference. "If you've ever been in bed with mosquito, you know that isn't true." She also announced that the Huffington Post has a new living section which feature the stories of people volunteering, raising money for causes they care about, and other inspirational stories.
