This document discusses Bayesian reliability demonstration tests (BRDT) in the design for reliability (DFR) process. It presents challenges with traditional reliability demonstration tests, and how BRDT can help address these challenges by incorporating prior knowledge of a product's reliability from DFR activities. The document outlines how BRDT uses Bayesian statistics with a prior reliability distribution, typically Beta, to calculate posterior reliability and determine confidence levels. It proposes a simplified BRDT algorithm for DFR that constructs the prior reliability distribution based on DFR inputs then performs trade-off studies to determine test parameters like sample size. BRDT allows testing with smaller sample sizes by leveraging reliability information from the DFR process.
Managing system reliability and maintenance under performance based contract ...ASQ Reliability Division
Performance based contracting (PBC) emerged as a new service model which is reshaping the acquisition, operation and maintenance of capital equipment. PBC is often referred to as performance based logistics in defense industry, or is called as power-by-the-hour in the airline industry. The focus of PBC is on the outcome of the system reliability performance, not materials and labors involved in the maintenance. This presentation introduces a novel quantitative approach to planning performance-based contracts in the presence of system usage uncertainty. We develop an analytical model to characterize the system availability by comprehending five key performance drivers: failure rate, usage variability, spare parts inventory, repair turn-around time, and system fleet population. This analytical insight into the system performance allows us to estimate the lifecycle cost by taking into account the design, manufacturing, maintenance and repair across the system lifetime. Two types of contracting schemes are examined under the cost minimization and the profit maximization. This presentation aims to provide theoretical guidance to facilitate the paradigm change as it shits from material based services to performance based contracting.
Reliability growth planning (RGP) is emerging as a promising technique to address the reliability challenges arising from the distributed manufacturing environment. Unlike RGT (reliability growth testing), RGP drives the reliability growth of new products by spanning the product’s lifecycle from design, prototyping, manufacturing, to field use. It is a lifetime commitment to the product reliability via systematic failure analysis, rigorous corrective actions, and cost-effective financial investment. RGP has shown to be very effective, particularly in new product introductions under the fast time-to-market requirement.
The RGP process will be introduced based on the three-phase product lifecycle: 1) design for reliability during early product development; 2) accelerated lifetime testing and corrective actions in pilot line stage; and 3) continuous reliability improvement following the volume shipment. Trade-offs among reliability investment, warranty cost reduction, and customer satisfactions will be investigated from the perspective of the manufacturer and the customer. Reliability growth tools such as Crow/AMSAA, Pareto graphs, failure mode run chart, FIT (failure-in-time), and FMECA will be reviewed and their roles in the GRP process will be discussed and demonstrated. Case studies drawn from electronics equipment industry will be used to demonstrate the RGP applications and justify its benefits as well.
In parallel with the RGP, efforts have been devoted to developing optimal preventative maintenance programs, either time-based or usage-based strategies. Recently, CBM (condition based maintenance) is showing a great potential to achieve just-in-time maintenance or zero-downtime equipment. RGP and maintenance strategies share a common objective, i.e. achieving high system reliability and availability. In this presentation, optimal maintenance policies will be devised in the context of system reliability growth.
With product reliability demonstration test planning and execution weighing heavily on cost, availability and schedule factors, Bayesian methods offer an intelligent way of incorporating engineering knowledge based on historical information into data analysis and interpretation, resulting in an overall more precise and less resource intensive failure rate estimation. This talk consists of three parts
1. Introduction to Bayesian vs Frequentist statistical approaches
2. Bayesian formalism for reliability estimation
3. Product/component case studies and examples
This is a three parts lecture series. The parts will cover the basics and fundamentals of reliability engineering. Part 1 begins with introduction of reliability definition and other reliability characteristics and measurements. It will be followed by reliability calculation, estimation of failure rates and understanding of the implications of failure rates on system maintenance and replacements in Part 2. Then Part 3 will cover the most important and practical failure time distributions and how to obtain the parameters of the distributions and interpretations of these parameters. Hands-on computations of the failure rates and the estimation of the failure time distribution parameters will be conducted using standard Microsoft Excel.
Part 1. Reliability Definitions
1.Reliability---Time dependent characteristic
2.Failure rate
3.Mean Time to Failure

An Overview of User Acceptance Testing (UAT)Usersnap
What is User Acceptance Testing? Also known as UAT or UAT testing.
it's basically, a process of verifying that a solution works for the user.
And the key word here, is user. This is crucial, because they’re the people who will use the software on a daily basis. There are many aspects to consider with respect to software functionality. There’s unit testing, functional testing, integration testing, and system testing, amongst many others.
What Is User Acceptance Testing?
I’ll keep it simple; according to Techopedia, UAT (some people call it UAT testing as well) is:
User acceptance testing (UAT) is the last phase of the software testing process. During UAT, actual software users test the software to make sure it can handle required tasks in real-world scenarios, according to specifications. UAT is one of the final and critical software project procedures that must occur before newly developed software is rolled out to the market.
User acceptance testing (UAT), otherwise known as Beta, Application, or End-User Testing, is often considered the last phase in the web development process, the one before final installation of the software on the client site, or final distribution of it.

Derek Milroy, IS Security Architect at U.S. Cellular Corporation, defined “vulnerability management” and how it affects today’s organizations during his presentation at the 2014 Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Leadership Forum in Chicago on Nov. 19. In his presentation, “Enterprise Vulnerability Management/Security Incident Response,” Milroy noted vulnerability management has different meanings to different organizations, but an organization that utilizes vulnerability management processes can effectively safeguard its data.
According to Milroy, an organization should develop its own vulnerability management baselines to monitor its security levels. By doing so, Milroy said an organization can launch and control vulnerability management systems successfully. In addition, Milroy pointed out that vulnerability management problems occasionally will arise, but a well-prepared organization will be equipped to handle such issues: “Problems are going to happen … You have to work with your people. This can translate to any tool that you’re putting in place. Make sure your people have plans for what happens when it goes wrong, because it’s going to [happen] every single time.”
Milroy also noted that having actionable vulnerability management data is important for organizations of all sizes. If an organization evaluates its vulnerability management processes regularly, Milroy said, it can collect data and use this information to improve its security: “The simplest rule of thumb for vulnerability management, click the report, hand the report to someone. Don’t ever do that. There is no such thing as a report from a tool that you can just click and hand to someone until you first tune it and pare it down.”

Design of Experiment (DOE) has been widely applied on improving product performance. It is an important part of Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). However, due to its limitation on data requirement and model assumptions, it is not popularly used in life test. In this presentation, a method combining regular DOE technique with proper life data analysis method is presented. This method can be used to identify factors that affect product life and also can be used to optimize design variables to improve product reliability.
It is crucial for businesses to audit their software test processes. This enables management to understand / evaluate if they are being adhered to. In cases where process deviation was accepted, it helps one to evaluate how the risks and impacts were measured and communicated. An audit will uncover what triggers major problems and early warning indicators are set in place to reduce risk.
Mindtree quality and test consulting addresses these issues by providing optimum solutions to help businesses audit their software test process.

Reducing Product Development Risk with Reliability Engineering MethodsWilde Analysis Ltd.
Overview of how reliability engineering methodology and software tools can help companies manage risk during product development and improve performance.
Presented at the Interplas'2011 exhibition and conference at the NEC on 27th October 2011 by Mike McCarthy.
This presentation looks at how ‘Reliability Engineering’ tools and methods are used to reduce risk in a typical product development lifecycle involving both plastic and metallic components. These tools range in complexity from simple approaches to managing product reliability data to the application of sophisticated simulation methods on large systems with complex duty cycles. Three examples are:
- Failure Mode Effects (and Criticality) Analysis (FMECA) to identify, manage and reuse information on what could go wrong with a design or manufacturing process and how to avoid it
- Design of Experiments for optimising performance through a structured and efficient study of parameters that affect the product or manufacturing process (e.g. injection moulding)
- Accelerated Life Testing to identify potential long term failure modes of products released to market within a shortened development time.
We will explore how gathering enough of the right kind of data and applying it in an intelligent way can reduce risk, not only in plastic product design and manufacture, but also in managing the associated supply chain and in the ‘Whole Life Management’ of products (including warranties). Furthermore, we will show how ‘sparse’ data gathered from previous or similar products, such as field/warranty reports, engineering testing data and supplier data sheets, as well as FEA, CFD and injection moulding/extrusion simulation, can inform and positively influence new product design processes from concept stage onwards.

With the increase in global competition, more and more costumers consider reliability as one of their primary deciding factors, when purchasing new products. Several companies have invested in developing their own Design for Reliability (DFR) processes and roadmaps in order to be able to meet those requirements and compete in today’s market. This presentation will describe the DFR roadmap and how to effectively use it to ensure the success of the reliability program by focusing on the following DFR elements.
Improved QFN Reliability Process by John Ganjei. John will talk about the improvements in the reliability process in this webinar.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

- Increasing competition
- Increasing product complexity
- Increasing customer expectations of product
performance, quality and reliability
- Decreasing development time

Hi (i = 1, …, n) represent a mutually exclusive
exhaustive collection of hypothesis. Suppose that
an event S exists and the conditional probabilities
P(S|Hi) are known. P(Hi) is termed as the prior
probability that Hi is true, and P(Hi|S) is the posterior
probability that Hi is true upon observing S.

13. Bayesian Approach – Discrete Case, cont’
Example: A large number of identical units are
received from two vendors, A and B. Vendor A
supplies with nine times the number of units that
vendor B supplies. Based on records, defective rate
from A is 2% and defective rate from B is 6%.
Incoming inspection randomly selects one unit and
finds it to be defective. Q: which vendor produced it?

14. Bayesian Approach – Continuous Case
f ( ) h(S | )
Prob( | S)
f ( ) h(S | ) d
where, S represents a group of observed
events, θ is a random scalar or vector to
describe the parameters or statistics of the
underline event distribution, Prob(θ|S) is the
posterior probability density function of θ, f(θ) is
the prior probability density function of θ, and
h(S|θ) is the conditional distribution of S.
Mingxiao Jiang MEDTRONIC CONFIDENTIAL

21. Reliability Prior Distribution in DFR Process - 2
• In the DFR risk prioritization phase, the reliability allocated
to a specific component or subsystem could be very high. For
example, a product under development may have an overall
reliability requirement of 90% (for example, first year).
Through FMEA and prior product Pareto assessment, about
10 critical components and subsystems are identified. For the
sake of argument, assuming equal allocation of reliability
requirement to each critical component or subsystem (a much
better allocation approach can be done based on
consideration of cost, risk level, etc) we have approximately
99% reliability as the requirement at one of these individual
components or subsystems.
• Throughout the DFR process with stress testing and PoF
driven corrective actions, the reliability growth is tracked. Of
course, this is subject to RDT to validate.

23
27. Remarks - 1
• Successful application of a Bayesian approach
depends on the prior experience or life data (testing or
field) from previous generations of the product under
design. BRDT can still be used successfully for a totally
new product design and development, based on the
prior distribution characteristics of reliability in a DFR
process.
• DFR activities aid estimation of prior reliability. BRDT
can be integrated into the whole DFR process by linking
it to FMEA, PoF, and reliability requirement flow down or
allocation.
Mingxiao Jiang MEDTRONIC CONFIDENTIAL
25
28. Remarks - 2
• Estimating prior reliability quantifies the interim
effectiveness of the DFR process: the more effective
upstream DFR effort, the more efficient and often
earlier RDT. This can feed into reliability growth
analysis useful for the BRDT design.
• Bayesian reliability approaches involve challenging
mathematical operations for engineers. The illustrated
numerical approach can be used easily by engineers
with any standard spreadsheet calculation
methodology, for success run test or test with failures.
• Bayesian RDT is more efficient and cost effective
than Classical RDT.
