BASKETBALL NOTES
In 1891 a teacher from Springfield, Massachusetts (USA), James
NAISMITH, was concerned that his students were unable to do outdoor
sporting activities during the winter months and invented a game that
could be played in the gym, which consisted of putting the ball into a
peach basket. That is how basketball was born.
The popularity of basketball was consolidated when men’s teams
played at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
Women’s teams debuted forty years later at the Montreal Games.
The best players and teams in this sport currently play in the
NBA league in the United States.

How is it played?
Objective:
The aim is to throw the ball through the basket and stop the
other team from doing the same to you.
Playing area:
The dimensions of a basketball court are 28m long by 15m wide
(28x15m) and the hoop is 3.05 m high.
Duration:
Four ten-minute quarters. When the time is over, if there is a tie,
overtime quarters of five minutes are played until one of the two
teams wins.
Scoring:
The value of scoring a basket is not always the same. It depends on the point from
which the shot was made:
From outside the three-point line: 3 points
From inside the three-point line: 2 points
From the free-throw line (after a personal foul): 1 point

BASIC RULES
Basketball players play with a ball on a court dribbling, passing, and
shooting.
There are two teams of five players on the court and seven reserves
on the bench.
They score points when a player shoots the ball through the hoop.
Play starts with a “jump ball” at center court. At halftime, teams
switch sides.
Each team has 5 time-outs per game.
Each player is assigned a position when playing. This position is
usually determined by the height of the player:
The tallest person usually plays “center”
The medium size ones play “forwards”
The shortest players then play “guards”
European League teams usually have one guard, two forwards and two
centers.

VIOLATIONS
A violation occurs when the player infracts the rules of
Basketball and it results in the possession of the ball to the
opponents.
It happens when:
● the player takes more than two steps without bouncing the
ball on the floor. This is called Travelling.
● when a player stops dribbling and then starts dribbling
again or bounces the ball with two hands at once. We call
this a Double Dribble.
● Backcourt rule: when the attacking crosses into the
frontcourt they cannot move back into the back court,
otherwise possession is given to the other team.
● Three-second rule: no attacker can spend more than three
seconds inside the scoring area of the rival team. When
someone exceeds this time, the ball is passed to the other
team, who has to throw it into play from the sideline.

FOULS
A foul is an illegal action that can commit a player from one team
to a player from the adverse team:
Basketball is generally a non-contact game. If, in particular occasion this is
not respected, a foul is committed.
There are two types of fouls:
The first ones are called defensive fouls. They occur when the
offensive player is being fouled by the defender. Defenders should not
block, push, trip, strike or hold the player in possession of the ball.
The second ones are the offensive fouls. For example a player in
offense commits an offensive foul when charging into a stationary defender.

PENALTIES
Play stops on all rules violations.
The opponent gains possession of the ball after a violation.
After a foul is committed and depending on which type of foul it is,
one of two things will happen:
-The opposing team gains possession of the ball, or…
-The fouled player shoots free throws.
