 Team Handball originated in Europe in the 1900’s, and recognizes
over 140 countries as members for the International Handball
Federation.
 It started as a field game and had 11 players
on a team. Later, the game was modified to become an indoor
sport.
 This is a team sport where two teams of seven players each (six
players and a goalkeeper) pass and bounce a ball trying to throw it
in the goal of the opposing team.
 The object of handball is to score more points than your opponent.
 A handball game can be played with a court, two goals and a ball.

 The Ball
 The ball is 58 to 60 centimetres for men and 54 to 56 for women. It
weighs 425 to 475 grams for men, 325 to 400 for women.
 The Court
 The court for handball is 40 metres long and 20 metres wide.
 A match consists of two periods of 30 minutes each.
 Each team consists of 7 players; a goalkeeper and 6 outfield players.
 Outfield players can touch the ball with any part of their body that is
above the knee.
 Once a player receives possession, they can pass, hold possession or
shoot.
 Only the goalkeeper is allowed to come into contact with the floor of
the goal area.
 Goalkeepers are allowed out of the goal area but must not retain
possession if they are outside the goal area.
Are allowed to:
• 1. Defend the goal using
hands, feet and body.
• 2. Move outside the goal
area and throw for a goal,
but must abide by the same
rules as court players.
• 3. Take more than 3 steps
when carrying the ball
• 4. Hold the ball longer than
3 seconds.
Aren’t allowed to:
1. Leave the goal area while in
possession of the ball
2. Pick up a ball outside the
goal area.
 Goalkeeper  the player who defends the goal with just about
every part of the body! The goalkeeper is the only player who can
touch the ball with their feet.
 Centre a creative handball player who directs play in both
defense and attack.
 Left and right backs usually the largest players on the
handball team. When defending, they try to block shots.
 Circle runner The circle runner is quick and gets into a good
scoring position themselves.
 Left and right wingers the fast players. They shoot from the
more difficult angles.
