Team handball originated in Germany in the 1900s and became an Olympic sport in 1972. It is now played indoors by two teams of 7 players on a court similar to a basketball court. Players can dribble for 3 steps and pass to teammates but cannot bounce the ball more than once or pass to themselves. Goals are scored by throwing the ball into the opponent's net, and games involve different types of throws, passes, and shots along with defensive skills like blocking and stealing. Team handball has grown to become popular in Europe and over 140 nations participate through the International Handball Federation.
