Benzaldehyde is an organic compound consisting of a benzene ring with a formyl substituent. It is the simplest aromatic aldehyde and one of the most industrially useful. Benzaldehyde was first extracted in 1803 from bitter almonds and can also be synthesized from toluene through chlorination and oxidation or from benzyl alcohol through partial oxidation. It is used as a flavoring agent in imitation almond extract and in the production of other compounds like ephedrine and chloramphenicol.
