2. Topics
• Avoiding Gender-Oriented Language
• Avoiding Gender-Biased Language
• Avoiding Gender Specific Language
• Avoiding Sexist Language
• Using Gender Neutral Language
6. Defining Sexist Language
Sexist language is language that excludes either
men or women when discussing a topic that is
applicable to both genders.
The practice of assigning gender biased terms to
neutral terms.
7. For instance, the statement
"Each student choose his own topic for his term
paper," leads the reader to assume that all the
students in the class were male, despite the
probability that half of them were female.
13. Reasons to Avoid Sexist Language
• Sexist language encourages discrimination.
• It discourage the people from pursuing their
dreams.
• It offends a group of the people or community
i.e. either male or female.
• It alienates or isolates one gender from the
other.
14. For Example
If engineers are always spoken of as male, a girl
who aspires to be an engineer may feel that she has
no hope, since "all" engineers are men.
Or
If a Gynecologist is always spoken for female, a boy
who wish to go on this field will be discourage.
15. By using Sexist language which is
offensive to half of our audience,
we will not get our message across.
People will not take interest in our
arguments if they are aggrieved by
our use of exclusively masculine
pronouns.
17. One thing should be remember that;
the goal is not to avoid referring to
individual people as male or female;
the goal is to be inclusionary when
speaking in theoretical statements or of
mixed-gender field.
18. Methods to avoid Sexist language in
our context
1.Use genderless titles.
2. Use alternate male and female expressions.
3.Recast into the plural.
4.Replace the sexist pronoun with appropriate words.
19. 1. Use Genderless titles
1.The average student is worried about his
grade.
• Fixed [ The average student is worried
about grades. ]
2. There were a meeting of chairmen of
different companies.
• Fixed [ There were a meeting of
chairpersons of different companies. ]
20. AVOID USE
1. Man, Mankind
2. Chairman,
chairwoman
3.Female Nurse,
Male Nurse
4.Manpower
5.Layman
6. Airhostess, Air
Host
Humanity
Chairperson
Nurse
Human resource,
Layperson, non
specialist
Flight Attendant
21.
22. 2. Use alternate male and female
expressions
1. Let each student participate. Has he had a
chance to talk? Could he feel to go out?
• Fix [ Let each student participate. Has she
had a chance to talk? Could he feel to go out? ]
23. 3. Recasting into plural
1. Give each student his paper as soon as he is
finished.
• Fixed [Give students their papers as soon as
they are finished.]
(Gender-neutral and grammatically correct)
2. Each student makes up his own schedule.
• Fixed [Each student make their own
schedules. ]
•(Gender-neutral and grammatically correct)
24. 4. Replace the sexist pronoun with
ONE, YOU, or (sparingly) HE OR SHE both.
• When it is not possible to recast sentences in the
plural sense then
Use he or she or his or her to be inclusive.
25. For Example:
The winning contestant must claim his or her
prize by Tuesday.
However, using this formulation too often
can break up the flow of your writing, so use
it sparingly.
26. •Original: “…Go where no man has gone
before.”
•Clunker: “…Go where no man or woman has
gone before.”
•Clunker: “…Go where no one has gone before.”
•Clunker: “…Go where no humanoid gone
before.”
•Fix: “…Go where we have never gone before.”
27. • Original: “Every man for himself”
• Clunker: “Every man or woman for himself
or herself”
• Clunker: “Every man/woman for him/her
self”
• Fix: “Everyone for him or herself”
• Fix: “Everyone for yourselves”
28.
29. The use of sexist language undermines
the universal and social goal of a non-
discriminatory, inclusive society.
There are simple ways to avoid using
language that can offend and
marginalize half the people on Earth, so
writers should take care to use gender-
inclusive language.
