AUTOMATIC IRRIGATION
SYSTEM
1
What is irrigation?
Irrigation is the artificial application of the
water to the soil.
It is used to assist in the growing of agricultural
crops, maintenance of landscape, and re-
vegetation of disturbed soils in dry areas and
during periods of inadequate rainfall.

ABOUT AIS
 This system senses the moisture content of the
soil and automatically switches the pump when
the power is on.
It has been designed to facilitate the automatic
supply of adequate water from a reservoir to
field or domestic crops in all agricultural
seasons.
This is employed to continuously monitor the
soil moisture content level to decide whether
4
Irrigation is needed in the soil.
PUMPING MECHANISM is used to deliver the
needed amount of water to the soil.
5
CONSTRUCTION AND
WORKING
 The work can be grouped into 4 subsystems
namely
i. Power supply
ii. Sensing units
iii. Control unit
iv. Automatic irrigation control system
6
COMPONENTS
MOISTURE SENSOR
COMPARATOR
8051 SERIES MICROCONTROLLER
WATER PUMP
VOLTAGE REGULATORS
CAPACITORS
RESISTORS
RELAY CIRCUIT
LED BULBS etc..
7
MERITS
Highly sensitive
Low cost
Reliable circuit
Work according to the soil condition
Complete elimination of manpower
System can be switched to manual mode
whenever required.
8
DEMERITS
This is applicable for only large farms
Have limited life after installation due to the
deterioration of the plastic component in a hot,
arid climate when exposed to ultraviolet light
9
FUTURE EXTENSION
The working of this project is basically dependent
on the output of the humidity sensors. Whenever
there is need of excess water in the desired field,
then it will be not possible by using sensor
technology. For this we have to adopt the DTMF
technology. By using this we will be able to
irrigate the desired field in the desired mount.
