Theory Recap
AUDIENCE THEORY
LO: Identify concepts of audience and explain how they
apply to one of your media productions
What is audience?
• The media industry is highly competitive and all media
texts are created with a target audience in mind.
• If there isn’t an audience for a media text then it won’t be
successful either in getting its message across or, if it is a
commercial media text, making money for the producers.
• Media producers use audience research and analysis to
find out as much as possible about their target audience
and use that research to ensure their production will
appeal to them.

LO: Identify concepts of audience and explain how they apply to one of your media productions
Example for Narrative
The first theory I will discuss is Todorov’s narrative theory which states that
all narratives follow a three part structure: they begin with equilibrium,
where everything is balanced, progress until something comes along to
cause disruption and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is
restored.
This can be applied to my own production as my film opens in a sense of
equilibrium whereby the protagonist is going about his daily routine which
is evidenced in the establishing shot. As the scene continues the
protagonist is involved in a fight with the antagonist which is emphasised
through various handheld camera movements which would carry a
signified meaning of a disruption.
However, as the scene ends on a cliffhanger it can be suggested that
there is no equilibrium which was done on purpose to create a sense of
enigma.

  • 17. What is audience? • The media industry is highly competitive and all media texts are created with a target audience in mind. • If there isn’t an audience for a media text then it won’t be successful either in getting its message across or, if it is a commercial media text, making money for the producers. • Media producers use audience research and analysis to find out as much as possible about their target audience and use that research to ensure their production will appeal to them. • 31. Example for Narrative The first theory I will discuss is Todorov’s narrative theory which states that all narratives follow a three part structure: they begin with equilibrium, where everything is balanced, progress until something comes along to cause disruption and finally reach a resolution, when equilibrium is restored. This can be applied to my own production as my film opens in a sense of equilibrium whereby the protagonist is going about his daily routine which is evidenced in the establishing shot. As the scene continues the protagonist is involved in a fight with the antagonist which is emphasised through various handheld camera movements which would carry a signified meaning of a disruption. However, as the scene ends on a cliffhanger it can be suggested that there is no equilibrium which was done on purpose to create a sense of enigma.
