MUSIC VIDEOS: THE AUDIENCE - RESEARCH Ben Crofts
I created an online survey to gather some information about peoples viewing habits on music video Most of the people answering my survey were in my age group, due to me advertising the survey on my social networks where most of my audience are under 18 year olds! The results are just a small insight to the viewing habits of those watching music videos
The Results

How often do you watch music videos?
What genres (types) of music video do you watch?
How do you watch music videos?
Why do you watch music videos? I find them entertaining to watch, normally there is a story behind the video and too the song Its good to see the visual interpretation and for older music the body language of the performers Entertaining Usually when someone suggests it or there is a lot of hype about it, idont watch them for fun It is good to put an image with a sound I'll watch the videos of my favourite bands/singers because I like them. Entertainment and general interest in specific artists. Entertaining, a way to escape and relax
To you, What makes a good music video? Videos where there is some connection between the lyrics and the visuals although random can make it interesting. Random videos but still make sense and aren't being weird purely for the point of it Something fun, exciting, sometimes humorous  If it makes sense and there is actaully a ponit being made,not random stuff put in the vidoe Live recording. Sometimes the video can make a normally dull track something better Unique, creative  and has general relation to the actual song. Bit of humour, bit of live performance

Where do you watch your music videos?
Ever purchased a music video? (on iTunes etc)
Results    There was a very small sample size of this survey so we can only use it to get a very very small insight into the viewing habits of music video and most of the participants were under 18.
However.. From the survey I have learnt the majority of my participants watched music videos fairly often. The most popular genre was Pop & R&B but only marginally – which is expected considering the age group I mainly surveyed  100% of the people I surveyed had watched music videos on YouTube! Presumably because it’s on demand, you can watch what you want when you want.
77% of the people I surveyed also watched music videos on music TV channels and 44% also watch music videos on social networking sites like Facebook Different people had different opinions on what made a good music video and why they watched them, but generally it was for entertainment Those surveyed mainly view music videos on their computer
Although watching music videos on iPod/iPhones was a runner up, as the mobile technology in the future increases we can expect more people to view music videos on mobile phones as opposed to the 34% who view music videos on their mobiles in my survey, in the future some may argue that watching music videos on mobile phones may become the norm. Most people watch music videos on their own but many also view them with their friends and family. Only 22% of those surveyed have purchased a music video, the rest either didn’t at all or had one included in a digital download
Conclusion This has given me a brief insight into the audience’s viewing habits on music video, these figures are ever changing as a few years ago ‘YouTube’ was unheard of and the thought of watching music video on mobile phones would be unthinkable.  Institutions need to think of ways to keep up with the ever growing technology to engage with the audience, ‘Vevo’ working with Youtube was a joint set up between record companies to make music video easier to view online and stop illegal copyright an example of how institutions are trying to engage with the audience in ways which fit with the technology available today.
