Audience Research Analysis
As you can see from the statistics above, the results that I got showed that the
majority of my target audience turned out to have a female majority. Thus I will
try and fit the narrative and video around the stereotypical ideas of what women
enjoy to see within music videos, such as a theme of love within the narrative.
Within this question I began to get a solid idea of what the overall genre
preference of my target audience. This has allowed me to plan my video along
with the common conventions that are found within the music videos in said in
certain genres. Due to the results that I have gathered, I have decided to make
my music video fit the genre conventions of a pop rock video, while also keeping
to some of the conventions of a rock video, thus I will use a mixture of narrative
and performance shots.
I decided on this question for part of my survey to gain knowledge on the types
of artists in which my target audience enjoy to watch. This allows me to research
various music videos from popular bands and see what they have created, thus
allowing me to adjust my plan to suit the similar conventions and characteristics
of these bands. This links to another question within the survey where I had
asked my audience to leave the name of their favourite bands.
From the research I have gathered, it is clear to see that the majority of pepole
would believe that a link between the lyrics and the visuals is the key feature
within a music video as just under three quarters of the chart is taken up with
this section. Therefore I plan to focus my music video heavily around a link
between the lyrics and narrative that is occuring with the video, allowing me to
meet the requests of my target audience.
As you can see in the table above, the majority of my target audience belive that
the use of a strong narrative, within a music video, is an important feature. The
average weighted score overall for this section was 7.70/10, therefore I plan to
have a strong narrative that has a decent development and obeys Todorov’s
narrative theory.
As you can see, unlike the narrative structure, my target audience did not view a
performance within the music video to be as important as a strong narrative. The
weighted average result for this question was only 6.40/10. However, due to this
result I do not plan on excluding a performance aspect within my video as this is
a common convention within the pop rock genre and it is still seen by my target
audience as a semi-important element to the music video.
I included this question to try and narrow down the song choices that I had been
considering using for my music video. All of the songs are well known songs by
the artist ‘Train’ and as you can see from the answers, my choices have been
narrowed down to one specific song. Therefore I have decided to use the song
‘Hey Soul Sister’ for my music video as it was the most popular song out of the
five that I had presented to my target audience.
Finally I decided to include the 3 different catergories into which a music video
could fall and asked my target audience which they would like to see portrayed
in a music video. The data that I had gathered has highlighted that I should use
amplification within my video, however I am not eager to disregard the other
two catergories within my video and thus I am considering making a music video
that is a combination of two of the catergories.

Audience research analysis

  • 1. Audience Research Analysis As you can see from the statistics above, the results that I got showed that the majority of my target audience turned out to have a female majority. Thus I will try and fit the narrative and video around the stereotypical ideas of what women enjoy to see within music videos, such as a theme of love within the narrative.
  • 2. Within this question I began to get a solid idea of what the overall genre preference of my target audience. This has allowed me to plan my video along with the common conventions that are found within the music videos in said in certain genres. Due to the results that I have gathered, I have decided to make my music video fit the genre conventions of a pop rock video, while also keeping to some of the conventions of a rock video, thus I will use a mixture of narrative and performance shots. I decided on this question for part of my survey to gain knowledge on the types of artists in which my target audience enjoy to watch. This allows me to research various music videos from popular bands and see what they have created, thus allowing me to adjust my plan to suit the similar conventions and characteristics of these bands. This links to another question within the survey where I had
  • 3. asked my audience to leave the name of their favourite bands. From the research I have gathered, it is clear to see that the majority of pepole would believe that a link between the lyrics and the visuals is the key feature within a music video as just under three quarters of the chart is taken up with this section. Therefore I plan to focus my music video heavily around a link between the lyrics and narrative that is occuring with the video, allowing me to meet the requests of my target audience. As you can see in the table above, the majority of my target audience belive that the use of a strong narrative, within a music video, is an important feature. The average weighted score overall for this section was 7.70/10, therefore I plan to have a strong narrative that has a decent development and obeys Todorov’s narrative theory.
  • 4. As you can see, unlike the narrative structure, my target audience did not view a performance within the music video to be as important as a strong narrative. The weighted average result for this question was only 6.40/10. However, due to this result I do not plan on excluding a performance aspect within my video as this is a common convention within the pop rock genre and it is still seen by my target audience as a semi-important element to the music video. I included this question to try and narrow down the song choices that I had been considering using for my music video. All of the songs are well known songs by the artist ‘Train’ and as you can see from the answers, my choices have been narrowed down to one specific song. Therefore I have decided to use the song ‘Hey Soul Sister’ for my music video as it was the most popular song out of the
  • 5. five that I had presented to my target audience. Finally I decided to include the 3 different catergories into which a music video could fall and asked my target audience which they would like to see portrayed in a music video. The data that I had gathered has highlighted that I should use amplification within my video, however I am not eager to disregard the other two catergories within my video and thus I am considering making a music video that is a combination of two of the catergories.
