- Focus Group-
I got various people of mixed gender, within the target audience age
range to look at some of the construction work I have done so far;
to give opinions and advice on how to improve. Overall I had 10
people, 6 girls and 4 boys. I showed them 2 Magazine Advert
designs I made, one featuring the picture used for my Digipak front
cover and another with a different photo from the same
photoshoot. Then I showed them two different Digipak designs, one
with some images from the music video shooting and the other
with the majority of the pictures from the Digipak photoshoot.

2. Which Magazine Advert do you think is
most effective and why?

3. The majority of the people (7) I asked
preferred this Digipak design over the
other one, as they felt the framing of
the photo was a lot better. They also
thought that the ‘SYML’ fit better on
this one as it didn't cover his part of his
head like it does in the second. Another
aspect most people preferred was that a
lot more of his body was showing
therefore the overall ad didn't feel as
crowded; some people said they liked his
hands being in the shot as it gave a more
relaxed feel. On the other hand some
people (3) liked the other image as they
preferred the closer shot, and felt it was
a lot more engaging. Everyone agreed
that the yellow and black writing really
suited the style and colours of the
Magazine Ad, however felt the ‘SYML’
could have a brighter yellow shadow to
make it stand out more, and be a lot
bolder.

4. Although the majority preferred the
other Magazine Ad design everyone
agreed that this image was also
effective and just as eye catching.
They liked the fact it was a closer
shot and that his body language was
still really relaxed to fit the style of
music. Everyone agreed that if I were
to use this image I would need to put
the ‘SYML’ behind his head and make
the ‘Where’s My Love’ so it doesn't
cover his head at all. I asked
everyones opinion on the typeface
and if they felt it suited the genre
and style of music as well as being
able to read it. The majority (8) felt it
was good and the yellow shadow
behind helped it stand out. The other
2 felt that the bottom line of writing
on both designs was too small and
quite difficult to read.

6. Everyone is the focus group much preferred this Digipak design over the other. They
all agreed that for an album Digipak it was best to not have too many pictures from
the music video; as this would work for an EP but they all felt an album Digipak
needed to mainly be pictures of the artist, which I completely agree with. Everyone
liked the 6 panel layout and really like the landscape picture spread over 2 panels.
For both Digipaks they liked the CD panel having a picture from the music video as
the felt the colours of the image work well with the rest of the colour scheme.
Everyone agreed that the back cover works well, conventionally igipaks have a plain
back picture however I really liked this picture of the artist from the filming.

7. Everyone much preferred the first insert picture on this Digipak as they felt the
colours fit much better as well as being a lot more engaging than the other one. The
also felt that the Digipak looks a lot more professional with having all the images
from the one photoshoot. When looking at existing Digipaks I did find that the
majority of the pictures are from one photoshoot. Overall they liked the front
cover, the framing of the picture and the typeface positioning, they felt was really
effective. The use of the black and yellow being used both on the Digipak and
Magazine Advert gives a good link and flow to all the products. Finally they liked
the overall simple design and layout and think it looks very professional.
