Evaluation Question 3
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Throughout this project, audience feedback has been essential, from the research and
planning stages, right through to the final feedback and completed tasks.
At the beginning of the coursework, during the early stages of the research, I pitched first and
original ideas. At this stage the ideas were basic and what my first thoughts were when
listening to my chosen music. The first idea was a music video with the main images being
nature and a very loose narrative around one guy and two girls that appeared throughout but
weren’t the main focus. The feedback for this very early idea was that a more complex
narrative should be the main focus although natural imagery should still be incorporated.
The next time I pitched any ideas was during the Primary Target Audience research stage. This
was through asking primary target audience members what they would like to see in videos
so that I could incorporate it into my own. I asked them 10 questions either on their own or
in pairs.
After the primary target
audience research
interviews, I created a
pitch to present in front a
group of primary target
audience members so that
they could evaluate and
give me feedback on how
to improve it to suit their
preferences. This allowed
me to show them how I
had developed since the
early ideas and after their
feedback and the
interviews.
During the editing stage of the video when we all had the timelines together and had began
putting a absic video together we evaluated each others videos. This allowed a target
audience to give feedback on what I should add to the video to make it more appealing and
suit the genre better.
During the finishing of both the music video and the ancillary tasks the class gave everyone
one last set of feedback for some last improvements. These are the notes I got back on the
music video:
 Really like the quick changes of filters on the beat
 Filter change at 40 seconds is a bit sudden/ too quick
 Like the scene at the end between the two different girls
 Like the sunsets
 The flashes are good
 A bit confusing at times
 Love the confusion – trippy, enjoyable especially the colour flashes
 Excellent pacing/ effcets of editing – very trippy and well suited to the song
 Creative ending
 Warm to cold is nice
 Pacing matches
 Mise-en-scene works
After completing the video I showed it to people in target audience and uploaded it to
YouTube in order to get feedback in the comments and reach a wider audience. I got
feedback from Alex Woolley and Katie Nicholls from showing them diretcly. I also got
feedback on the ancillary tasks from
them both.
I asked them both to give me negative
feedback as well as positive so that I
could see what I could have improved
on during the filming and editing
processes
The feedback I got in the comments on YouTube were useful because they included
positives and negatives; just like Alex and Katie.
 Pace of video matches pace of music
 Colour flashes, fades and use of black and white (decrease in saturation) work
well
 Coherent narrative
 Well-acted
 Likes that blink is in sync with the beat
 Likes colour flashes
 Likes narrative
 Likes colour flashes – works well with impact points
 Likes change of shot on impact points
 Video works in sync of music
 Likes the way that the black and white/ saturation decrease represents a
flashback
 Unsure of narrative – who the girlfriend and the other woman are
 Likes colour flashes
 Likes ‘creative editing’
 Likes fast paced cutting
 Likes the interpretation of the lyrics
 Likes ‘overall creativity’
 Likes production design
 Likes use of abstract imagery
At the beginning of the ancillary tasks, we only started with digipaks. I created four designs
for outside panels, two designs inside panels, and four different fonts for the digipaks.
We then all gave feedback to each other on the digipak drafts.
I got this feedback, which included which choices I should make to create a final digipak:
This is how I developed the feedback and suggestions:
I took the initially feedback and created
a design out the draft pictures of what
it would roughly look like.
I then took what I would have liked to
have created and incorporated the
feedback to create a rough design.
I began work on both designs but
ended up only creating the version I
preferred.
This meant that although I took in the
audience feedback I wanted to create
something that fit more into the
conventions. I used some of the
feedback to create the final digipak as
well as creating something that I would
like more.
After beginning to create both versions
in Photoshop it became clear that the
audience feedback based version was
less popular as when I began making it some primary audience members said they preferred
the blue digipak better.
I then solely worked on the blue version and got feedback on that. This done with the final
feedback on the music video and magazine advert. The feedback on the digipak was:
 Maybe put a glow around the Photoshop-ed images to blend more with the
background.
 Simple but effective.
 What is the panel with the girl? Is it relevant?
➢ As the album is called Chloe Burbank Vol. 2 I decided to add an image of a girl to
represent ‘Chloe Burbank’ this is loosely inspired by the Weeknd’s album The
Trilogy.
 Maybe stretch the top left (right inside panel) across to the right (left inside
panel)?
➢ If I had done this, the image would have been distorted or less of the image
would have been visible. Also, the image of ‘Chloe Burbank’, the title of the
album, and the yellow which develops the conventions by creating an eye-
catching inside panel would have been removed.
 Artist goes well with the genre.
➢ The image is similar to the front cover of A Seat At The Table by Solange
Knowles which is a real media product in the Alternative R&B genre.
 Inside panel imagery is good.
➢ The image of the girl is part of what I originally wanted to create and the image of
the sunset is based on audience feedback during the draft stage.
 Unclear album/ artist name.
➢ In the genre the album and artist name is always on the back for enigmatic
purposes as well being so the artist is the brand rather than the name.
 Too plain.
➢ This is genre specific as all digipaks in the genre are ‘plain’ because simplicity is
generic in all aspects of the Alternative R&B genre.
 Black font on spine is too hard to read.
 Love it, maybe back panel in yellow?
➢ This wouldn’t have worked due to the dark blues of the front would be too
contrasting.
 Too basic, needs more depth.
➢ The simplicity is part of generic conventions and both original drafts that were
chosen were very simplistic.
Other feedback I got from Alex Woolley and Katie Nicholls on the finalised versions of the
digipak was:
The other ancillary task created was a magazine advert to accompany the digipak. We began
by presenting drafts like what we did with the digipak drafts.
 ‘However the image of a sunset in the inside cover seems a bit out of place, as
its subtler colours vary from the highly saturated blocks of colour’: In my original
thoughts before presenting the drafts it was going to be a block of blue like the
outside panels. However, during the first feedback session target audience
members said they liked the idea of the image of a sunset would link in with the
genre and back to the music video loosely.
 ‘I don’t understand why the picture of the picture of the back of the head is
necessary, this is unclear’: This is to represent the album title: Chloe Burbank.
 ‘The colour of the back cover makes it hard to read the writing, it would be
clearer if the writing was white or a brighter colour’: I had tried the text in a white
but it hadn’t looked right and stood out too much. I had tried to make the text in
a darker grey rather than a black but it may still look too dark on the dark blues.
We presented them and then the class chose which magazine advert they preferred. This
time I had no prior design that I particularly wanted to create so I would try to go solely by
feedback in order to create one that I knew the target would like.
The two least popular drafts fit in with the conventions of magazine adverts in the
Alternative R&B the most as they presented tour dates as the main text, and the artist as
the main image as a part of the background image.
The chosen deign essentially breaks all conventions but as both the music video and digipak
also break conventions in the genre the magazine advert did not look completely out of
place.
I had begun to create a magazine advert that looked like the original draft, as this is what
target audience members preferred to other drafts. However, when it had started to look
what a possible final version would do it became apparent that it did not look good.
 Unsure about background colour
 Like layout but name could be bigger
 Not sure about the logos
 The font is a bit generic
 Background colour is a bit off
 This looks basic - think text could be better integrated
 Synergy - streaming media debatable
 ‘Joji’ needs to be bigger
 Love it other than the stars
 Love the song list
I then started working on a completely different version. This was the easiest route as i
wanted a fresh start so that what I created for the target audience would fit completely
what they would want.
This is what the completed version looks like. It incorporated the image of the sunset yet
still keeping the yellow/ orange tones of the originally background colour from the first
version. The layout is also very similar expect ‘Joji’ stands out more now as it has the
shadow drop effect on it. Also, the orange stars don’t stand out as much but are still
noticeable. The contrast of the blue album cover on the orange toned background make it
stand out making it the centre focus as it is the main image.
 ‘It doesn’t really look like a magazine article, are something that you would see on a
social media page’ - as this is usually how they promote the tour dates or upcoming
albums this interpretation could mean that the promotional material fits conventions.
 ‘The colour of the album cover doesn’t match with the colours of the article’ - this was
too break conventions as usually the album cover, a similar image, or something that
relates to a music video from the album.
 ‘It doesn’t say where the album is available to buy from, it only says ‘out now’ - the
viewer might want to know which shops sell the physical album rather than just having
the digital copy’ - as to the recent development in digital technology more people are
using streaming services rather than buying hard copies in shops.
 ‘The Amazon (Apple) Music logo does start to blend with the background slightly, making
it a bit difficult to differentiate from the background’ - I had tried to place it over a
darker area in order for it to stand out more however it blended in anyway. If I could I
would put a slight border around it, like the images on the digipak, in order for it to not
blend in as much.
To conclude, what I have learned from audience feedback is that listening to what
the target audience would like is the best route because the products being created
are for them so their opinions and preferences matter. They can also point out flaws
in the products that I couldn’t see because I had been working on them for so long
which helped me improve during development.

Evaluation Question 3 - A2 Media Studies

  • 1. Evaluation Question 3 What have you learned from your audience feedback? Throughout this project, audience feedback has been essential, from the research and planning stages, right through to the final feedback and completed tasks. At the beginning of the coursework, during the early stages of the research, I pitched first and original ideas. At this stage the ideas were basic and what my first thoughts were when listening to my chosen music. The first idea was a music video with the main images being nature and a very loose narrative around one guy and two girls that appeared throughout but weren’t the main focus. The feedback for this very early idea was that a more complex narrative should be the main focus although natural imagery should still be incorporated. The next time I pitched any ideas was during the Primary Target Audience research stage. This was through asking primary target audience members what they would like to see in videos so that I could incorporate it into my own. I asked them 10 questions either on their own or in pairs.
  • 2. After the primary target audience research interviews, I created a pitch to present in front a group of primary target audience members so that they could evaluate and give me feedback on how to improve it to suit their preferences. This allowed me to show them how I had developed since the early ideas and after their feedback and the interviews.
  • 3. During the editing stage of the video when we all had the timelines together and had began putting a absic video together we evaluated each others videos. This allowed a target audience to give feedback on what I should add to the video to make it more appealing and suit the genre better. During the finishing of both the music video and the ancillary tasks the class gave everyone one last set of feedback for some last improvements. These are the notes I got back on the music video:  Really like the quick changes of filters on the beat  Filter change at 40 seconds is a bit sudden/ too quick  Like the scene at the end between the two different girls  Like the sunsets  The flashes are good  A bit confusing at times  Love the confusion – trippy, enjoyable especially the colour flashes  Excellent pacing/ effcets of editing – very trippy and well suited to the song  Creative ending  Warm to cold is nice  Pacing matches  Mise-en-scene works
  • 4. After completing the video I showed it to people in target audience and uploaded it to YouTube in order to get feedback in the comments and reach a wider audience. I got feedback from Alex Woolley and Katie Nicholls from showing them diretcly. I also got feedback on the ancillary tasks from them both. I asked them both to give me negative feedback as well as positive so that I could see what I could have improved on during the filming and editing processes
  • 5. The feedback I got in the comments on YouTube were useful because they included positives and negatives; just like Alex and Katie.
  • 6.  Pace of video matches pace of music  Colour flashes, fades and use of black and white (decrease in saturation) work well  Coherent narrative  Well-acted  Likes that blink is in sync with the beat  Likes colour flashes  Likes narrative  Likes colour flashes – works well with impact points  Likes change of shot on impact points  Video works in sync of music  Likes the way that the black and white/ saturation decrease represents a flashback  Unsure of narrative – who the girlfriend and the other woman are  Likes colour flashes
  • 7.  Likes ‘creative editing’  Likes fast paced cutting  Likes the interpretation of the lyrics  Likes ‘overall creativity’  Likes production design  Likes use of abstract imagery At the beginning of the ancillary tasks, we only started with digipaks. I created four designs for outside panels, two designs inside panels, and four different fonts for the digipaks.
  • 8. We then all gave feedback to each other on the digipak drafts.
  • 9. I got this feedback, which included which choices I should make to create a final digipak: This is how I developed the feedback and suggestions:
  • 10. I took the initially feedback and created a design out the draft pictures of what it would roughly look like. I then took what I would have liked to have created and incorporated the feedback to create a rough design. I began work on both designs but ended up only creating the version I preferred. This meant that although I took in the audience feedback I wanted to create something that fit more into the conventions. I used some of the feedback to create the final digipak as well as creating something that I would like more. After beginning to create both versions in Photoshop it became clear that the audience feedback based version was
  • 11. less popular as when I began making it some primary audience members said they preferred the blue digipak better. I then solely worked on the blue version and got feedback on that. This done with the final feedback on the music video and magazine advert. The feedback on the digipak was:  Maybe put a glow around the Photoshop-ed images to blend more with the background.  Simple but effective.  What is the panel with the girl? Is it relevant? ➢ As the album is called Chloe Burbank Vol. 2 I decided to add an image of a girl to represent ‘Chloe Burbank’ this is loosely inspired by the Weeknd’s album The Trilogy.
  • 12.  Maybe stretch the top left (right inside panel) across to the right (left inside panel)? ➢ If I had done this, the image would have been distorted or less of the image would have been visible. Also, the image of ‘Chloe Burbank’, the title of the album, and the yellow which develops the conventions by creating an eye- catching inside panel would have been removed.  Artist goes well with the genre. ➢ The image is similar to the front cover of A Seat At The Table by Solange Knowles which is a real media product in the Alternative R&B genre.  Inside panel imagery is good. ➢ The image of the girl is part of what I originally wanted to create and the image of the sunset is based on audience feedback during the draft stage.  Unclear album/ artist name. ➢ In the genre the album and artist name is always on the back for enigmatic purposes as well being so the artist is the brand rather than the name.
  • 13.  Too plain. ➢ This is genre specific as all digipaks in the genre are ‘plain’ because simplicity is generic in all aspects of the Alternative R&B genre.  Black font on spine is too hard to read.  Love it, maybe back panel in yellow? ➢ This wouldn’t have worked due to the dark blues of the front would be too contrasting.  Too basic, needs more depth. ➢ The simplicity is part of generic conventions and both original drafts that were chosen were very simplistic. Other feedback I got from Alex Woolley and Katie Nicholls on the finalised versions of the digipak was:
  • 14. The other ancillary task created was a magazine advert to accompany the digipak. We began by presenting drafts like what we did with the digipak drafts.  ‘However the image of a sunset in the inside cover seems a bit out of place, as its subtler colours vary from the highly saturated blocks of colour’: In my original thoughts before presenting the drafts it was going to be a block of blue like the outside panels. However, during the first feedback session target audience members said they liked the idea of the image of a sunset would link in with the genre and back to the music video loosely.  ‘I don’t understand why the picture of the picture of the back of the head is necessary, this is unclear’: This is to represent the album title: Chloe Burbank.  ‘The colour of the back cover makes it hard to read the writing, it would be clearer if the writing was white or a brighter colour’: I had tried the text in a white but it hadn’t looked right and stood out too much. I had tried to make the text in a darker grey rather than a black but it may still look too dark on the dark blues.
  • 15. We presented them and then the class chose which magazine advert they preferred. This time I had no prior design that I particularly wanted to create so I would try to go solely by feedback in order to create one that I knew the target would like. The two least popular drafts fit in with the conventions of magazine adverts in the Alternative R&B the most as they presented tour dates as the main text, and the artist as the main image as a part of the background image.
  • 16. The chosen deign essentially breaks all conventions but as both the music video and digipak also break conventions in the genre the magazine advert did not look completely out of place. I had begun to create a magazine advert that looked like the original draft, as this is what target audience members preferred to other drafts. However, when it had started to look what a possible final version would do it became apparent that it did not look good.  Unsure about background colour  Like layout but name could be bigger  Not sure about the logos  The font is a bit generic
  • 17.  Background colour is a bit off  This looks basic - think text could be better integrated  Synergy - streaming media debatable  ‘Joji’ needs to be bigger  Love it other than the stars  Love the song list I then started working on a completely different version. This was the easiest route as i wanted a fresh start so that what I created for the target audience would fit completely what they would want.
  • 18. This is what the completed version looks like. It incorporated the image of the sunset yet still keeping the yellow/ orange tones of the originally background colour from the first version. The layout is also very similar expect ‘Joji’ stands out more now as it has the shadow drop effect on it. Also, the orange stars don’t stand out as much but are still noticeable. The contrast of the blue album cover on the orange toned background make it stand out making it the centre focus as it is the main image.  ‘It doesn’t really look like a magazine article, are something that you would see on a social media page’ - as this is usually how they promote the tour dates or upcoming albums this interpretation could mean that the promotional material fits conventions.  ‘The colour of the album cover doesn’t match with the colours of the article’ - this was too break conventions as usually the album cover, a similar image, or something that relates to a music video from the album.  ‘It doesn’t say where the album is available to buy from, it only says ‘out now’ - the viewer might want to know which shops sell the physical album rather than just having the digital copy’ - as to the recent development in digital technology more people are using streaming services rather than buying hard copies in shops.  ‘The Amazon (Apple) Music logo does start to blend with the background slightly, making it a bit difficult to differentiate from the background’ - I had tried to place it over a darker area in order for it to stand out more however it blended in anyway. If I could I would put a slight border around it, like the images on the digipak, in order for it to not blend in as much.
  • 19. To conclude, what I have learned from audience feedback is that listening to what the target audience would like is the best route because the products being created are for them so their opinions and preferences matter. They can also point out flaws in the products that I couldn’t see because I had been working on them for so long which helped me improve during development.
