This chapter discusses attention and consciousness. Attention is how we actively process limited information from our senses and memories. Consciousness includes awareness and content of awareness. There are different conceptions of consciousness including biological levels of arousal, being aware of cognitive processes, unconscious information, and subjective experiences. The relationships between attention and consciousness are: attention + consciousness, no attention + no consciousness, attention + no consciousness, and no attention + consciousness. Examples of each are provided. Preconscious processing is also discussed where information is available for processing but outside conscious awareness, such as priming effects.

Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. Researchers tried to understand the basic elements of consciousness using a method known as introspection. Wilhelm Wundt, founder of the first psychology lab, is often associated with this school of thought despite the fact that it was his student Edward B. Titchener who first coined the term to describe this school of thought.
Functionalism formed as a reaction to the structuralism and was heavily influenced by the work of William James and the evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin. Functionalists sought to explain the mental processes in a more systematic and accurate manner. Rather than focusing on the elements of consciousness, functionalists focused on the purpose of consciousness and behavior. Functionalism also emphasized individual differences, which had a profound impact on education.
Person-centred therapy, also known as person-centred or client-centred counselling, is a humanistic approach that deals with the ways in which individuals perceive themselves consciously, rather than how a counsellor can interpret their unconscious thoughts or ideas.
The core purpose of person-centred therapy is to facilitate our ability to self-actualise - the belief that all of us will grow and fulfil our potential. This approach facilitates the personal growth and relationships of a client by allowing them to explore and utilise their own strengths and personal identity. The counsellor aids this process, providing vital support to the client and they make their way through this journey.
This ppt talks about cognitive skills such as perception, memory, language, and decision making. It also explains how these skills are connected to the brain and which part of the brain is responsible for these skills. It also denotes the deceases and defects associated with these skills.

This slide(perception) describes perception, types of perception, the parts of the brain which control it, and disorders and remedies. It also explains memory and its types. The language which is another cognitive skill also presented in this slide.
This is a brief overview of various aspects of the higher mental functions. Namely
memory
orientation
attention
communication
perception
executive functioning
these needs to be assessed using screening and categorizing tools such as MMSE and MoCa
Cognition is the study of the brain, mind, and its process. There are a lot of cognitive skills. Some of them are Attention, perception, memory, decision-making, creativity, problem-solving, reasoning, and the like. This slide show talks about the same.
This slide will guide an individual to enhance their listening skills, and make them aware about its different aspects which influence their social activities.
In this brief presentation, we are going to view the aspects of integrative functions & their associated parts in the brain & ANS, also some effects of stroke on patients regarding the post-psychosocial aspect, & other interesting matters to view at the end of the presentation, please view the presenter's notes since they contain more info & some links relevant to our topic

In Odoo, the multi-company feature allows you to manage multiple companies within a single Odoo database instance. Each company can have its own configurations while still sharing common resources such as products, customers, and suppliers.
The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. 1. The Nature of Attention
and Consciousness
• Attention
– Is the means by which we actively process a
limited amount of information from the
enormous amount of information available
through our senses, our stored memories,
and our other cognitive processes
3. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
• Consciousness
– More directly concerned with awareness – it
includes both the feeling of awareness and
the content of awareness, some of which may
be under the focus of attention
4. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Different conceptions of consciousness
• Biopsychological
– different levels of arousal (sleep, coma, hyperactivity)
• Meta-cognitive
– Reflection on your own cognitive processes
– Being aware of cognitive processes
• Psychoanalytic
– Unconscious information – we do not have access to
it in normal awakened state
• Phenomenological
– What it is like to have an experience of something
– Individual, subjective aspects of experience
5. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Relationship between attention and
consciousness
• Attention + Consciousness
• No attention + No Consciousness
• Attention + No Consciousness
• No attention + Consciousness
6. ?
Can you provide an example of each of the
possible relationships between attention
and consciousness?
7. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
1. Preconscious Processing
•Information that is available for cognitive
processing but that currently lies outside of
conscious awareness exists at the
preconscious level of awareness
8. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Preconscious Processing
•Priming
– Processing of certain stimuli is facilitated by
prior presentation of the same or similar
stimuli
– Sometimes we are aware of the prime
sometimes we are not
– Even when we are not aware of the prime,
the prime will influence the processing of the
target
9. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Preconscious Processing
Antony Marcel (1983)
•Participants had to classify series of words into
various categories (e.g. pine-plant)
•Primes where words with two meanings such as
palm followed by target word (tree or hand)
•Task outline:
Is this a plant?
Prime – PALM
Target - TREE
10. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
1. Preconscious Processing
Antony Marcel (1983) (cont.)
- If the participant was consciously aware of
seeing the word “palm”, the mental pathway for
only one meaning was activated
- If the word “palm” was presented so briefly that
the person was unaware of seeing the word,
both meanings of the word appeared to be
activated
11. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Preconscious Processing
Tip-of-the-tongue phenomenon
•People who can not come up with the word, but
who thought they knew it, could identify the first
letter, indicate the number of syllables, or
approximate the word’s sounds
12. The Nature of Attention and
Consciousness
Preconscious processing
Blindsight
•Lesions in some areas of the visual cortex
•Patients claim to be blind
•When forced to guess about a stimulus in the
“blind” region, they correctly guess locations and
orientations of objects at above-chance levels
