ASSURE Method
1-Teaching the months of the year to a 1st grade class, Special Ed, 10 boys, 7 girls,70% white 20%
African-Americanand 10% Hispanic.7 studentsin the class have mild to severe ADHD (attentiondeficit
hyperactivitydisorder).
A – I will be teachingaspecial educationclassthatincluded10boysand 7 girlsfor a total of 17 students.
12 studentsare white,4 are African-American,and1 isHispanic. A little underhalf of the classhas
ADHD rangingfrommildto severe. Basedoff thisknowledgesome general characteristicsIknow are
that the students’culture rangesgreatly. The studentsare between6or 7 yearsoldbecause theyare in
the firstgrade.Because there issuch a difference betweenthe students,Iamgoingto assume that do
not all learnthe same and have variouslearningstyles.
S – The 1st
grade studentswill verballystate the monthsof the yearinthe correct orderby engagingin
variousgames,makingcalendars,andpracticingwithaclassmate witha90% successrate bythe endof
the week.
S – The mediathat I have selectedtouse are computers, calendars, polyspots, note cards, the smart
board andiPads.
U – Since Iwill be usinga couple differenttypesof media,Iwill needto make sure thatthere isa type of
technologyavailable thatwillworkforthe purpose Ineeditto serve. The firstday I will arrive towork
earlyand checkto make sure everythingisinplace before the studentsarrive andthe restof the weekI
will make sure everythingisreadytogo forthe nextday before Ileave thatevening. Asthe students
arrive to classI will tell themthatwe will be learningthe monthsof the yearandask if anyone thinks
theyalreadyknowsome togatherwhat little knowledge thattheyalreadyknow. ThenIwill tell them
howwe are goingto do it. Followingthat,we will beginlearningthe monthsof the year. The firstgame
we will playwill be agame.I will have studentssaythe monthsof the yearbysettingupa boardgame
type thingon the ground withpolyspots and thenif theyanswercorrectlytheygettomove forwarda
space. Afterevaluatingthe students,Icouldplace studentsingroupsbasedonhow well theyknowthe
material. If a couple studentsknowbetterthanthe others, thentheycanhelpeachother while theyare
ingroups. The nextactivityinvolvesmakingacalendar. Iwill alreadyhave sheetsof paperprintedoff
withthe calendartemplate butwithoutthe actual monthname missing. Afterfillinginthe namesof the
months,theywill thenfill inimportantdatesandholidaysthattheyalreadyknow tohelpthemmaintain
memoryof that specificmonth. AfterIfeel thattheyhave gainedagoodgrasp, I will allow the students
to getin pairsand practice namingmonthsof the year to eachother. They can do thisbyusingnote
cards and iPads. Ican have themwrite the numbers1-12 on one side of the note card and one partner
has to holdupthe card and showthe numberandthe otherhasto say whichmonththat is,so that way
I knowtheyknowthe order. To use the iPads, theycouldwrite outthe monthsof the yearon a paint
app.
2. R – I will observe the studentsandmake sure theyare learningthe material asIwant themtoo. If I stop
classand ask randomstudentsquestionsaboutthe monthsof the year, theyshouldbe able toanswer
correctly. If theydo now, thenI knowthat I needtotry somethingdifferentorgive themalittle more
time to learnit.
E - If I observe thata certainmethodthatI have alreadyplannedisnotworkingout, thenIwill have to
switchmyways andtry somethingdifferent. If the studentsare notpickingupthe soundsof the words
well withthe audiotape,Imayhave to soundthemout myself thenhave themsounditoutto each
other.
