This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching 4th grade students about holiday traditions from different cultures. There are 20 students total, with some cultural diversity including 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish students, and 2 African Americans. The lesson plan involves presenting students with information about holidays from American, Muslim, Jewish, and African American cultures through objects, photos, PowerPoints, and Internet research. Students will then choose a holiday by random drawing and create a shadow box to demonstrate their understanding of the chosen holiday's traditions and importance. The teacher will evaluate student learning throughout the lesson and after its completion through class discussions, charting activities, a shadow box project, and a Jeopardy review game.

“Teaching Holiday traditions to 4th graders. There are 20 students; 11 girls and 9 boys. There
are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish, and 2 African Americans.”
A- Analyze Learners
The age range of students in my class is 9 to 10.
11 students are female, the other 9 are male.
The students are in 4th grade.
The students in my class have cultural diversity (2 Muslim, 3 Jewish, 2 African
Americans, 13 White Americans).
S- State Objectives
The students will describe one holiday of each culture (American, Muslim, Jewish,
African American). Students will be presented with objects and photographs of
important items in each culture’s holiday; for example, a Menorah will be presented for
the Jewish holiday Hanukkah. The students will also watch a PowerPoint on each
holiday. After the students have been presented with all the information they will draw
a holiday name out of a hat andthen present a shadow box with items and a paragraph
on the importance of the holiday. At the end of the unit the students will describe one
holiday from each culture with 85% accuracy.
S- Select Methods, Media, & Materials
The students will be presented with objects and photographs of important items in each
culture’s holiday. The students will listen while being presented with a PowerPoint on
each holiday. After gaining knowledge on each holiday the students will be asked to
make their own shadow box that represents the holiday they have been assigned. To
gain extra information about the assigned holiday the students will be allowed to use
the Internet for one hour, and then the students will write a paragraph on the
importance of the holiday.
U- Utilize Media & Material
Each day the students will obtain knowledge about a new holiday and its traditions.
They will first be presented with the objects/pictures and asked if they know what
culture celebrates the holiday. Then a PowerPoint presentation will be used to further
their knowledge. The students will use computers to get on the Internet to do research

on a holiday. They will also be provided with materials (such as construction paper,
glue, glitter, plastic bottles, and pipe cleaners) to make a shadow box.
R- Require Learner Participation
The students will be required to participate in a class discussion after each lecture on a
holiday. They will also be required to demonstrate their knowledge of each holiday by
working individually and charting the information in a format they prefer (web diagram,
lists, etc.). The students will also be required to design their own shadow box that
represents the importance of the holiday they have been assigned.
E- Evaluate & Revise
Every day I will present the students with a PowerPoint of each holiday.At the beginning
of each new class the students will be presented with a short video pertaining to the
holiday they learned about the day before. After all the holidays have been taught the
students will participate in a mini Jeopardy game. As a project to demonstrate their
knowledge, the students will design a shadow box to the importance of the assigned
holiday.
