R- Require learner participation
E- Evaluate and revise
A- I have twenty students in my fourth grade class. Of those students eleven are girls, and
nine are boys. Two of them are Muslims, three are Jewish and two are African Americans.
S- My students will discover and recognize the holiday tradition of their choice celebrated
around the world after watching a video, researching information with books and the
Internet, playing/singing a verse of a popular song from given country and creating a model
in two weeks with 85% accuracy.
S- YouTube, story books, magazines, computers, CD players and art supplies (paper,
crayons, glue, scissors, boxes) will be the media and materials used.
U- YouTube will be used to show an example of how holidays are celebrated all over the
world. Books, magazines, and computers will be used as research tools for the students to
obtain information about the country and holiday in which they choose to study. Students
2. will work in groups of 5 and use art supplies to create a model representing their holiday
celebration. The models will then be put into stations where there will be a CD player with a
popular song from the country that the students have chosen. The students will then walk
through the stations (figuratively visiting) and examine all of the different holiday traditions.
Throughout the weeks I will ensure all computers and media are working properly and all
materials are available prior to class starting.
R- Students will be engaged when watching the YouTube video, taking notes if appropriate.
Students will decide among themselves which responsibility each member has when it comes
to the group project. All students will research their country and how they celebrate holiday
traditions. Everyone will be required to create a drawing/object to contribute to the model.
The students in the group will vote on a song of their choice and inform the teacher at the end
of the first week so a CD can be made. There will be a preview day where the students
finalize their projects, ask questions, and the teacher can provide positive or negative
feedback.
E- Throughout the course of the unit I will modify accordingly if the students are having
trouble getting something. I will assess the information they are providing in their project to
determine of they have a true understanding of their holiday tradition. I will constantly be
checking the media they are viewing to make sure it is relevant and I will also listen to each
song before burning it onto a CD. I will also be making sure every student is contributing to
the group and that everyone is engaged at all times. After viewing their final model in the
walk through I will know whether I have achieved my objective. A rubric will be used to
assess the final project and a short quiz will be given testing the students on group projects
other than their own.
