Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Introduction
This assignment is a combination of 3 different subject which are measurement,
building material and construction technology. One week before we visit to the construction
site, Ms Ang has told us that on the 21th of november 2014 there will be a construction site
visit. Ms Ang had announced to us that day there will be an assignment after we done our
site visit. The assignment must be done by 28th of november 2014. On that day we have to
wear long pants and long sleeve shirt with our sport shoe and if possible we should wear
safety boots to avoid any obligation happen in contruction site
Ms Ang had help us find a contruction site which is just located nearby to our
campus. The construction site is D La-Tour Developed by Penang-based DK-MY
Properties SDN BHD was located at the following address:
No.4, Jalan PPU 3, Taman Perindustrian Puchong Utama, 47100 Puchong, Selangor
Darul Ehsan.
We walk to there since it is near to our university. We took around 5 minute to reach
the front gate of the contruction site. We reach there sharp at 10 o'clock. Before we enter
to the construction site, the site manager ask us to wear our helmet and make sure we
must follow the instruction to avoid any acident happen in the construction site. Around
sharp at 10.05 am we went in the construction site to take a tour around by the site
manager. The site manager explained to us each of everything. The site manager also
told us that this project total is RM65 million which is a lump sum contract. We can also
can see a clearer picture on the site on how is the technologies look like and also the
material that using in the construction site. Beside that we also can take picture inside the
site to gain more information.
D'latour comprises of two 23-storey towers with 332 serviced suites in one and 629
SoHo duplexes in the other. It occupies three acres and has a total built-up area of 1.7
million sq. ft. Curving gracefully up into the Bandar Sunway skyline, it is built to master-
class quality and infused with the most demanding standards . Comprising two designer
towers( D'Latour SoHo and D'Latour Residence),D'Latour is set to become the next big
thing in terms of residential landmark in Bandar Sunway.
It one of the kind design features include:
•Vertical garden city concept
•Internal void area for better natural ventilation
•Elevated infinty swimming pool with waterfall feature
•Environmental friendly Sky Garden at various at various floors
•Roof Top Sky Hub
•Distinctive 'Welcome Home' lobby
The designer of D'Latour was the world-class architecture company RDA Harris Architects
Sdn Bhd which is responsible for the design of multiple award winning developments
around the world.
4. Objective
–To give us the chance to experience the working environment in the construction site as a
Quantity Surveyor in the future
–To understand the safety and precautions on the site of the construction.
–To visualize a clearer picture of the building, machine and material that used in
construction site.
–To gain more knowledge on the uses of the machinery on the construction site.
–To know how does the process build up the building.
5. Content
Once we reach to construction site, we can clearly see that the building is
surrounded by the vertical hoarding. The uses of the vertical hoarding is to prevent
unauthorized person to enter to the site. Besides that, we can clearly see that the panel
about rules and regulation that was placed on the hoarding to make sure that the people
who authorize to enter the construction site must always follow the rules if not any injure
that happen u must bear it yourself. A small guardhouse that have been constructed and
for the purpose of guarding the gate to avoid unauthorized person get into the site.
Before we enter to the site, the site manager told us the safety precaution. He also
roughly explained the company and the building itself the D La-Tour. The site manager
then bring us into the construction site. In the construction site we can found that there are
a lot of thing that we does not seen before. Then we follow the site manager to enter to a
pathway that was constructed by timber with side netting that lead to the building.
In the building, the site manager start to explained that the foundation of the
construction site. Foundation of this building is micropile. Micropile is another type of pile
which is act as a supporting structure to transfer the load from the building to the ground.
As the name implies, micropile is small diameter piles constructed by the drilling process
and are often keyed into rock. There is various diameter of micropile can be found in the
market ranging from 100mm to 250mm. Of late, technological advancement in machinery
has made it possible for micropile of much greater diameters to be constructed. After
explained the site manager bring us to the basement.
Alongside we walked to the basement, we can see the reinforcement bar that pop
out from the slab. Those are post tensioning system that have been use for the whole
building. There is another thing we can assure this building is use post tensioning which
are there are no beam on top. We can only see there is only column that support the upper
floor slab. Telescopic props can be found everywhere inside the building. It is ideal to
support all kind of formwork to slabs, beams, walls and columns. Beside that the props
also act as safety purpose. Storage also can be found inside the building. The purpose of
the storage is to store cement, plaster, lime – dry store free from draughts which can bring
in moist air. Aggregates – clean firm base to ensure foreign matter is not included when
extracting material from the base of the stockpile. Bricks & blocks – to be stacked in stable
piles on a level & well-drained surface; covered with polythene sheets. Roof tiles – to be
stacked in pairs, head to tail, to give protection to the nibs.
In this building, scaffold can be found everywhere. There are two type of scaffold
which is independent and mobile access tower scaffolding. I can see that most of the
scaffold that for the external used is independent. While the internal use are mostly mobile
access tower. Independent scaffolds follow the same principal as putlog scaffolds but are
'free standing', putlogs are replaced with 5ft tubes and a row of standards and ledgers are
erected on the inside as well as the outside to provide support, in addition diagonal braces
are fitted between standards to give stability. The main reason to use independent
scaffold is because it does not rely on the building. Moreover it also easy to fix
up and easy to dismantle. For the mobile access tower is a gaining access to
buildings for maintenance and repair. Assembled from prefabricated
components. The reason that why mobile access tower is useful is because it
can move everywhere due to 4 castor have been install. Beside that it is stable
and rigid.
6. The three types of formwork that can be found around the site are wall,
column and slab formwork.
Beam Formwork- Beam formwork has prefabricated formwork sheeting parts (sheeting
bottom and side sheeting panels). Such individual parts are manufactured based on the beam
dimensions specified in the project. For prefabrication of the formwork sheeting parts, a
special preparation table must be manufactured on site.
Slab Formwork- It consist of sole plates, wedges, props, head tree, planks, batten and
ledgers. Slabs formwork rest on battens and joists. If props more than 8 it must provide
horizontal braces
Column Formwork- Similar to beam formworks, the sheeting of column formworks is
prefabricated according to the column dimensions from sheeting boards connected by cover
straps. The sheeting panels are placed in a foot rim which is anchored in the soil by steel
bolts. The foot rim consists of double-nailed boards. The foot rim must be exactly measured-
in because it is decisive for the exact location of the column. It has the same functions as the
thrust-board for foundation or beam formwork. When the sheeting panels have been inserted
in the foot rim, vertical arch timbers are placed to take up the forces from the cover straps of
the formwork sheeting.
There have three types of material formwork used in this building, which are timber, table
and steel formwork
Timber formwork
ADVANTAGE
•Timber is a popular formwork material.
•Concrete formwork can be made using only timber or combining timber with other
types of formwork material.
•Light weight, easy to fix and remove.
•Economical
DISADVANTAGE
•It is a traditional procurement process.
•It needs additional design and engineering time.
•Lack of experienced builders and erection crews for this formwork
Table formwork
ADVANTAGES
•Fast construction for large floor layouts.
•Fully assembled units can be maneuvered quickly into place.
•Using appropriate quality control, high quality surface finishes can be achieved.
•Reduced long-term workforce requirement on site.
•The need for infill areas and decking joints is minimized.
•Individual components of the formwork system can be precisely adjusted.
•Repetitive nature of the work makes it easier to plan construction activities.
DISADVANTAGES
•Cost of raw materials and cranes are expensive
Steel formwork
ADVANTAGE
•Has very high reuse rates
•Very smooth surfaces are possible
7. •Strong and can be stripped late
•Fast to install in simple walls and likes
DISADVANTAGE
•Thicker the surface greater the weight
•Steel dents easily
•Low versatility
•Release agents are demanded
Furthermore, the grade of concrete apply to this construction building is grade 40 concrete.
This type of concrete is used because it provides greater strength to the building. The
advantages of using grade 40 concrete are it has a relatively high compressive strength
and reduce in depth of slab, therefore it reduces cost. While the disadvantages of using
grade 40 are it is more expensive and it doesn’t retain the heat well. However in this
building, grade 15 is applicable to the column while concrete grade 25 is for the slab.
Regardless of the usage of concrete grade 40, another grade of reinforced concrete that I
would likely to recommend is concrete grade 30. The advantages of concrete grade 30 are
resistance to fire and cheaper than concrete grade 40. While the disadvantages of using
concrete grade 30 are lower compressive strength compare to grade 40 and it will easily
crack under heavy load.

Conclusion
After the construction site visit done by us, there are many valuable information and knowledge
gained by me. First of all, I have the chance to experience the life being a quantity surveyor.
Besides, I have learnt many things that I couldn’t learn from the lectures and textbooks. I now
understand better about how a construction site works after the visit.
I had seen many materials and tools used during the construction period. The process really
impressed me as I have never had the chance to see it that close. This will definitely help us to
recognize the materials better in the future.
Besides, I realized that communication between workers is very important. This is because every
single worker at the construction site is cooperating with each other in order to complete the task
given.
Furthermore, I had the chance to see how much safety has been emphasized in the construction site.
They require every single worker to wear their safety equipment on when they present in the
construction site. The safety rules need to be strictly followed by everyone present in the
construction site. Moreover, safety precaution signboard were seen everywhere especially at the
entrance. A safety officer was there to brief us about the safety rules before the visit began.
In conclusion, this visit is amazing for me as it has greatly increases my knowledge about
construction site. I am very thankful to have an opportunity to visit there in the first
semester. I wish that I could have more chances like this in the future later.
