3. Acknowledgement
First, i would like to express my sincere gratitude to Ms Ang
Fuey Lin, Mr Leong Boon Tik, and Ms Hasmanira Mokhtar for
guiding me and my friends, giving us some useful tips for this
study and also teaching us before, during, and after the site trip
which has helped me to complete this project more efficiently.
I would also like to thank to the contractor and every other
person involved in the site trip for taking their time to guide and
teach us students during our visit.
4. Introduction
We were given an assignment that invloves the three modules that is Measurement 1,
Construction Technology 1, and Building Materials, where every individual needs to
write a report on a site visit to a construction site. Ms Ang Fuey Lin organized the site
visit for us students to visit there on the 20th of June 2014 (Friday). The construction
site is located at Jalan Kelang Lama in Mukim Petaling.
About 60 students attended the site visit where everyone needs to be there outside the
site at the promised time 8:30 AM.
After everyone is assembled Ms Ang then guided us to a place with small buildings
around the construction site where the buildings are used exclusively for the
accommodation of workers in which we are to meet with the person in charge, which
is the contractor, to brief us on this site visit. Throughout the whole trip the contractor
and the safety officer gave us detailed explanations of the construction time by time in
every session. My friends and i are allowed to ask questions from them in which we
were able to get as much information as to understand more about the building. We
went as far as going to the upper floors from the lower ground level and then return
back to the ground floor by going down through the scaffolding. After that all of us
went into the meeting room for more discussion and to hold Question & Answer
session with the contractor. That is considered as the last thing that we will do before
the site trip ended. Before we leave, all of us students expressed our gratitude to the
contractor for allowing us to conduct this site trip and after that we took a group
picture before going back to Taylor's university with the bus provided.
5. Objective
To let us experience the actual working environment as a Quantity Surveyor
understanding the situations in dealing with unsure circumstances such as weather
conditions where at times some workers stop working when it happens and other risks
that may happen on site, this will help us where we can adapt easily once we start to
do work as a Quantity Surveyor in the near future.
To gain more knowledge in understanding what we've known from what we have
studied and also undertanding new things that we haven't studied before, which we
can see in real life at the construction site such that it can increase our knowledge on
the basic construction process by observing the workers and other informations that
are carried on site
Observe the usage of the construction equipment on site including mechanical plants.
To have an understanding of how the building is constructed in relating with the
drawings.
To understand and be aware of the importance of safety on site where we need to take
care by following the safety precautions and other instructions that will help us avoid
any accidents or injuries that can happen in the future once we enter into a constuction
site.
6. Details of the project
-25 storeys
-to be completed next november
-type of foundation: piling

carpark area, levels 7-24 for apartments
-AIKBEE TIMBERS (employer), LT LEONG SEKUTU (architect), PERUNDING

electrical engineer), PCM COST PERUNDING (quantity surveyor), ENCORP
CONSTRUCT (main contractor)
7. Content/Technical observation
This is the view of the site that i took when we firstarrived from he bus. The
construction is already in the structural works progress where you can see columns
and scaffoldings.
When we approach to one of the temporary buildings i saw these posters to tell us
about the main contractor's company that also includes some safety precautions as a
reminder of how important it is such that we always must wear a safety helmet and
other things when visiting a site.
8. This building is an accomodation for workers in which this is an office and it is where
we met the person in charge of our trip that is the contractor
Beside the officeis a schedule
where it shows a schedule,
rebar, casting, material
delivery, tower crane usage
and the contact number of the
relevant people
Based on my study, i quickly
identifued this as one of those
'temporary works' that i've
learned in construction
technology, These toilets are
mostly found outside the
buildings where this one is
taken right beside the water
storage
9. This symbol indicates that
there's a fire extinguisher
inside which will help in
case of an emergency where
you need to use it
Before we go in further in the building the contractor gives us a
short brief about safety where it is what they have to do every
time when there is a visitor.
10. This scaffolding is placed at the center
of the building (void) where it started
from the ground floor and leads to
higher floors. From what i've heard, the
void that is located there is to be used
for escalators. It will be constructed
once structural works are complete.
Steel bars arranged together
waiting to be used
Steel bars that are no
longer in use and is
grouped together for
recycling
11. Loads of timber materials waiting to be used, laid beside the building
Delivery vehicle, used to
transport materials such as
reinforcement bars
New fabric reinforcement
just delivered right when
our trip ended
12. Plastic and Steel
pipes found in the
building
A temporary work
for the workers
where it is found in
the 1st basement
floor. Most of the
rooms has electricity
which provides
lighting and power.
There are those
temporary works
that i've found here
which are used for
material storage and
other purposes.
Some are used for a
place for praying
(surau) for the
muslim workers
13. Indepent scaffolding found on the basement floor where we can see the workers
doing the plastering of the ceiling.
One of the types of temporary works. I noticed that you could find these
temporary buildings in most areas of the construction site that includes
the ground floor and the basement
14.
15. Bags of cement in
the building
Pile foundation that supports the base of the building
16. The picture above shows the
steel bars that are gathered
on the floor waiting to be
used. Whereas the picture
on the left shows the
reinforcement bars for the
car parks
17. The exterior
scaffolding used to
access the floors or to
transport materials.
During the sessions we
used this scaffolding
to go down to the
ground floor
18. The construction workers use
the formwork to bend the bars; i
find that very interesting, it's
like another type of bar bending
methods.
Bent bars found at the upper floors
19. 3m long pipes for
transportation of concrete,
there will need to be more
pipes added if they
transport the concrete to
the upper levels
20. Machine used to push the concrete along the pipe, even pushing it upward
The formwork for sides
and soffits of staircase
21. Water storage for the construction workers, placed outside the building and it is
used for laundry and toilets
The production of spacers, which
are used to determin the concrete
cover
This picture shows a
worker separating the
damp concrete to the right
measurement
22. Tower cranes used to carry
materials to the upper floors
Safety warnings
23. This is a temporary
office that is mostly
used for the
consultants and other
workers, as they're
so many drawings
that we found on the
table. The large table
is effectively used
for meetings and
discussions. On our
site trip, this is the
place where the
contractor holds a Q
& A session where
studentd get to ask
the contractor about
what they want to
know.
24. Conclusion
A site trip that lasts for about two in a half hours, i've come to understand how
important that safety is where you must always remember the safety rules and
precautions to avoid and damages or injuries such that every students that attended the
site visit wore safety helmets as instructed from the safety officer (those who doesn't
wear one will not be allowed to enter the site for safety measures). We were also told
to watch our steps as they're sometimes nails and open holes that are hard to notice on
the floor. In any case, i'm glad that we have a safety officer to brief us about it before
our trip to go inside the building.
I've also understood and was able to have a clear vision of how the construction
works where before this i was only able to understand through studies from notes or
books. The fact that there are at least one question asked from the students in every
session where the contractor answered every one of them helped an individual like me
in which he gave us some detailed explanations when answering, this was also thanks
to the students for asking some valuable questions in which we all share our
knowledge together. i was able to identify and recognize the the building components
such as the temporary works and the machineries that i see from the ones that i've
known from the notes and lecture slides. Communicating with them was a bit nervy
but as the time goes i feel very composed and was able to think clearly while not
feeling stiff or pressured, it was a great opportunity.
The site visit was an amazing experience, one of the first of many but this is one that
i'll never forget for it is the site trip that has made me understand more of the things
that i cannot even learn in class. This trip has greatly improved my knowledge in
many categories, especially knowing about the construction process. i am very
grateful for this opportunity provided for us first years.
