Emergence: The Connected Lived of Ants, Brains, and Software by Steven Johnson
In the introduction of the book Johnson begins by giving a narrative about the role that slime mold
took in discovering emergent behavior. Biologist in time have struggled to answer questions as to how
these organisms work together. The main concern about these emerging organisms was whether or not
there was a controlling member who directed all other members in each of the communities. More
than likely, the possible solution for any of these communities to show some sense of order would be
if there were a controlling unit or what Johnson mentions as controlling agents that would be in charge
of keeping the community in harmony.
So how exactly has the findings about slime mold given to science? Based on what I have interpreted
about the book I can say Johnson s narrative on how we find connection through emergent complex
living systems would be when he begins describing about the early work of Charles Darwin when
made his evolutionary discoveries at the Galapagos Islands. Because of his observational skills, which
mainly focused on natural selection and factors that would lead to a species to want to evolve due to
survival, this lead to wanting to understand more about what would be the true reason to want to
create emergence. The art of observation soon followed later in Johnson s timeline when he gives a

Response to 13, 1977, 21 by Jonathan Lethem
Alyssa M. Gonzalez
13, 1977, 21
In Jonathan Lethem s personal narrative essay, 13, 1977, 21 , Lethem reflects on when he was 13
years old, in the year 1977, where he watched the film Star Wars 21 times. But the essay is not
actually about the Star Wars film. It is about the way Lethem used going to the movies to remove
himself, or hide from the realities of his life, such as his mother s illness and awkward pre teenage
years.
The first few sentences of Lethem s essay is where he blatantly tells the readers that he s watched Star
Wars twenty one times in four months. He then uses the next three paragraphs to reflect on the
circumstances surrounding his trips to the movie theater in the summer of 1977 and trying to ... Show

The tone could be described as witty, but also nostalgic. Along with reflecting on his trips to the movie
theater, Lethem reflects on his awkward pre teen years, where it was speculated by his parents that he
was gay, and he followed a girl to her ballet class.
I m totally unsure, but I believe Lethem numbered each paragraph to go along with the significance of
numbers in his essay. The title itself, 13, 1977, 21 , begins to make sense once he introduces the events
of 1977, where he watched a film 21 times, at the age of 13. These three numbers are very significant
to him because he thinks of the twenty one times he watched the movie as him maturing, almost like a
Bar Mitzvah, at thirteen years old. Lethem also believed watching the movie twenty times would be
too mechanically round , and that adding the one more time would be more realistic. He also ends the
essay at paragraph twenty one the amount of times he went to see Star Wars.
Lethem s twenty one trips to the movie theater to see Star Wars was not entirely his
fascination with or liking of the movie. He used the Astor Plaza as a hiding place from the gradual
loss of his mother to natural illness, and already absent father. Watching the film so many times in the
summer of 1977 helped Lethem cope with his pre teenage struggles, and he describes it as when he
invented himself in the vacuum collision of

A Comparison Of Ancient Greek And Roman Civilization
Throughout History many civilizations have rose and fallen but we will be analyzing Greek and
Roman Civilization. Many people view the Romans as a copy cat empire compared to the Greek
because they modeled so many things after the Greeks, for myself, it would be correct to assume this
were true. At first during the colonial age or era, Romans and Greek heavily influenced one another
which one had engaged in trade at the Black Sea the surrounding Mediterranean areas. Trading
between the two nations was very successful due to the safety of Roman Military presence. Over time,
the Romans had adapted many of the Greeks practices and believes. This is one of the main reasons
that Roman could be seen as a copy cat of Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece and Rome both had used
agriculture. However, Rome did not have much problems with production of food through agriculture
like the Greeks did. Both of them had produced products like wheat, but the former, Greece, had failed
to produce a good amount of wheat because Romans had far superior farming techniques. Instead of
having a good production of wheat, the Greeks had substituted wheat for olive oil hence why many
people think of olive oil coming from Greece. Both nations had heavily relied on slaves as well. How
could a nation become so successful with running the government, thinking about important ideals, or
enjoying themselves if they had to worry about how they were going to get fed? Roman slaves were a

Loyalty In Sir Gawain And Beowulf
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the narrative Beowulf are stories of great bravery and loyalty.
Sir Gawain, one of the finest Arthurian romances, is an accurate representation of the code of chivalry,
bravery. Beowulf, an epic poem that has been told for centuries, is about a hero with superhuman
qualities demonstrating loyalty. Granted these characters are not alike in their actions, they do both
display bravery and loyalty in one way or another. Sir Gawain and Beowulf are both brave and loyal,
showing these qualities by taking on seemingly impossible tasks. Sir Gawain expresses his loyalty to
King Arthur, his uncle, by stating, I d be deeply honored to advise you before all the court (Gawain
Poet 124). Basically Sir Gawain is offering

Historical the things the whites did was violence against the black s communities. If anybody was
color the whites did not care what age they were in there eyes a nigger was a nigger so they would kill
them for no reason. It begins in a little community called Rosewood it had blacks and whites in it but
majority was blacks. A mob of 40 150 whites comes to Rosewood and raise hell just to mess with the
colors. All because of a lady name Fannie Taylor. She was a wife to her husband name James, she also
had workers named Aunt Sarah Carrier, and her granddaughter they both was African Americans. Aunt
Sarah had a big family to, everybody loved Aunt Sarah because she was a good women, hardworking,
and even the whites loved her. Also there was a white man named Mr. Wright who own a store he was
basically making nigger. Mr. Wright was a married man with a family but he be having sex with his
worker and she is African American. He was for the blacks, there was a lot of violence going on a lot
of the blacks was not safe. In Florida and the south, the response of whites to the massive departure of
black resident was mixed (Rosewood Report,1993 p4). Fannie Taylor had a secret lover she would not
give her husband none because of her lover. Few hours later her lover came over after the husband left
and they started to have sex. After that situation was over the lover beat her than ran off.

Comcast Universal Merger Case Study
Company and Situation
In December 2009, Comcast announced its intent to acquire a majority stake in the media
conglomerate NBC Universal from General Electric (GE). The planned acquisition was subject to
scrutiny from activists and government officials; their concerns primarily surrounded the potential
effects of the vertical integration that the acquisition could create, as Comcast is also heavily involved
in cable television and internet services in many media markets. The deal went through, resulting in
Comcast owning 51% of the company until March 2013, when GE divested its stake to give Comcast
sole ownership.
Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts described the deal as a perfect fit for the company, as Comcast would
be able to bolster its role as a creator and distributor of content, with a particular emphasis on
multiplatform anytime, anywhere media that American consumers are demanding ; increasing access
to NBC owned content through various platforms. The deal would also add Comcast s own cable
channels to NBCU s existing suite of cable networks, contributing to 82% of the merged company s
total revenue. Despite the focus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ownership remained split at 51% to 49% for four years. Then, on February 12, 2013, Comcast
announced its intention to complete the purchase all at once and assume 100% ownership of the
company by the end of March.
The acquisition was completed March 19, 2013. The video marketplace has changed structurally with
or without Comcast NBC acquisition. More and more videos, programs and advertisements are
displayed on the Internet, not the traditional media channel, television. The video business model has
gradually changed as time goes by. Comcast has reached such a significant scale that it now owns a
huge large amount of media and entertainment properties. However, facing the uncertainty of video
marketplace, many people proposed their

The Daphnia Magna Experiment
Plant compounds play a very important role in the defense of plants and in this experiment the plant
defense compounds of caffeine and Kava kava were tested on Daphnia magna to test if there was a
change in heartbeat of the organism. The purpose of the experiment was to see how these compounds
affected the Daphnia magna. The t values for both the caffeine and Kava kava were calculated to be
1.82 and 1.62, which were both smaller than the obtained t critical value of 2.57. A conclusion was
drawn that there was no statistically significant difference in heart rate after the plant defense
compounds of caffeine and Kava kava were added compared to before they were added.
Introduction: In this experiment two plant defensive compounds, ... Show more content on

Their bodies are encased by an uncalcified shell, carapace, and they can reach lengths of 5mm with a
kidney bean shape (Ebert, 2005). The Daphnia magna live in mostly freshwater environments, but can
live in certain brackish water areas. In comparing males and females the males have smaller body
sizes, larger antennas a modified post abdomen (Ebert, 2005). The Daphnia magna are good test
subjects to assess the effects of the plant defense compounds of caffeine and Kava kava, as they are
easy to care for, inexpensive, and the effects of the compound are easily noted through looking at the
heart rate of the organism under a microscope. This experiment required the use of a two tailed t test
to determine whether there was a difference in heart of the Daphnia magna before and after the plant
defensive compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were introduced. This test also helps to see if the
difference in the test is statistically significant, which determines if the results obtained occurred by
chance. A t value is obtained to get the probability value and as the t value increases it signifies a
larger meaningful difference between the two groups (Blanar, 2017) and as it decreases the opposite
happens. If a t value is smaller than the t critical value the null hypothesis is accepted, but if the
obtained t value is larger than the t critical value the null hypothesis is rejected. A p value is also
important for this experiment, as it is the probability the null hypothesis is correct. The null hypothesis
for this experiment was that there was no difference in the Daphnia magna heart rate after the plant
defense compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were added compared to before, while the alternative
hypothesis generated was that there is a difference in the Daphnia magna heart rate after the plant
defense compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were added compared

The Free Trade Area Of The Americas
The Free Trade Area of the Americas
Introduction
The Free Trade Area of the Americas agreement (FTAA), was first introduced in 1994 with intentions
of finalizing the deal by 2005. However, the agreement failed to pass due to the backlash of some of
the Latin American countries involved, especially Venezuela and its President of the time, Hugo
Chavez, who held a strong vocal opposition of the free trade agreement (The Defeat of the FTAA). In
this paper I will discuss the history of the FTAA, about how it started, why it did not happen, and if it
will be possible in the future. I will give my opinion on whether the FTAA will ever come back and if
the current free trade deals will help or hurt a possible resurgence of the FTAA.

Inhibit Moral Behavior
A moral inhibitor is a condition that hinders our moral behavior and leads to acting irrationally. It
arises when the right thing to do, and the action that is being performed are not the same. In the next
600 words, I will present and explain a heuristic that inhibits moral behavior. I will then speak of a
situation that is an example of a heuristic. I will also describe what steps to take in the described
situation to help ensure moral behavior. Moral behavior is an aspect of our humanity that is essentially
learned at a very young age. Our moral behavior is sculpted based on our culture and our
surroundings. It is responsible for the actions we choose to commit. When our moral behavior is
inhibited, we stray away from the right thing to do and act in ways that would seem malicious and
cruel to a rational bystander. Social and situational context can explain what induces moral people to
act in heinous ways. A heuristic is a mental shortcut that readily comes to mind and simplifies
cognitive tasks. The solution itself is not perfect or guaranteed to be optimal, but it is enough to satisfy
the immediate goals (1). A heuristic affects moral behavior by invoking automatic evaluations, which
strongly influence judgements and actions and can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Discussing the Concepts 1. What is marketing and what is its primary goal? * One definition of
marketing is, a social and managerial process by which individuals and organizations obtain what they
need and want through creating and exchanging value with others. * A much simpler definition would
be, managing profitable customer relations. * Its primary goal is to create value for customers and
capture from customers.
2. Compare and contrast customer needs, wants and demands. Describe the need versus the want for

HOW SHAKESPEARE PRESENTS ROMEO’S FEELINGS IN
ACT 1 SCENE...
HOW SHAKESPEARE PRESENTS ROMEO S FEELINGS IN ACT 1 SCENE 1 AND ACT 2
SCENE 2
Love is an important theme in most of Shakespeare s play, including in Romeo and Juliet because love
is a stronger force than all the animosity and forces of fate in Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet,
Shakespeare s play, Shakespeare explores Romeo s change in attitude to love between Rosaline and
Juliet. In Act 1 Scene 1 Shakespeare introduces us to Romeo s passionate desire towards Rosaline
through the use of oxymoron, monologues and vivid imagery. In contrast, in Act 2 Scene 2, when
Romeo is addressing Juliet, his language shifts through the use of light, religious and mythical
imagery to reflect his newly found romantic love to Juliet.
In Act 1 scene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This notion is furthered through the use of binary opposition throughout Romeo s oxymoron O
brawling love, O loving hate . This monologue of strong contrasting images of love and hate in one
sentence suggests that Romeo finds the intensity of his emotion towards Rosaline destabilising and his
emotion is not calm and peaceful. Indeed, the deployment of oxymoron throughout Romeo s speech
such as heavy lightness or cold fire, sick health suggests that the character so overwhelmed by his
feelings that he loses the sight of his common sense and spins and turns into mad love towards
Rosaline.
In Act 2, Scene, 2 Romeo s attitude to love shifts from an infatuated love towards Rosaline to more
true and youthful love he feels for Juliet. When Romeo sets his eyes on Juliet for the first time, he uses
light imagery to express his feelings Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon . For Romeo, Juliet is
the sun who has brought brightness into his life like the sun that brought brightness to people s lives.
This beautifully romantic imagery highlights the purity of Romeo s feelings and underscores to the
reader the powerful force of love that Romeo is now entangled in.
Moreover, Shakespeare uses religious imagery to strengthen Romeo s feelings. He refers Juliet as a
bright angel , who is a winged messenger of heaven .This religious imagery highlights the perfection
of Romeo s love to Juliet

The Discourse Of A Discourse Community
A discourse community is defined as a group of people involved in and communicating about a
particular topic, issue, or in a particular field. We all belong to multiple discourse communities. To earn
a position of a discourse community one must possess accurate knowledge, establish reliability of
members to be accepted and learn to persuade other members of the community. The discourse
community that I identify with personally and the profession I plan to pursue is the world of film
production. However, there are many jobs that need to be done on a film set leading to there being
multiple discourse communities within the film industry, what I want to focus on specifically is the
DP, otherwise known as the director of photography . According to The Concept of Discourse
Community, by educator and researcher John Swales, a discourse community is defined by six
characteristics. The first, and probably most important, characteristic of a discourse community is the
idea that each discourse community has an agreed set of common public goals. The goal of every
filmmaker is to tell an exciting or interesting story that would make the audience think. The director of
photography uses the camera as a mirror. That mirror reflects our lives, our feelings, our thoughts and
points of view. Cinematographers create and interpret processes to make an original work of art rather
than simply setting up a camera and recording whatever is in front of it. If this were war, the DP is like

Colombian Andes. Palma et al. conducted focal sampling in order to examine the activity patterns and
diets of the two groups. The groups habitats were tracked by carefully marking trees, and the howler
monkeys activity patterns were split into five categories: feeding, moving, resting, social activities,
and other. The howler monkeys diets were recorded by noting the species and types of plant matter
(i.e., fruit, immature fruit, mature leaf, young leaf, flower, or bark) consumed by individual monkeys.

Based on feeding time, howlers spent slightly over half of their time consuming leaves (50.6%),
followed by their time spent consuming mature and immature fruits (40.2%). Conversely, based on the
mass of dry matter intake, leaves only accounted for 37% of their diet, whereas fruits accounted for
58.2%. After recording almost 400 howling bouts for a little over a year, Van Belle et al. (2013) found
that 42.1% were spontaneous calls (calls with no discernable external stimuli), 27.9% were reply calls
(calls following nearby howling without visual contact with the original caller or callers), 25.1% were
intergroup encounter calls, and 5.0% were extragroup encounter calls. The average interval of howling
bouts was approximately fifteen minutes, and intergroup and extragroup encounter calls lasted
significantly longer than spontaneous and reply calls. Considering the time of day, black howler
monkeys peaked howling bouts around dawn, and considering location, black howler monkeys were
in designated core areas (i.e., primary habitats where groups spend over 50% of their time) during the
majority of howling bouts. Discussion The evolution of trichromacy in howler monkeys is
extraordinary since no other platyrrhine species routinely expresses this quality (i.e., regular
expression in both males and females) (Jacobs et al.,

Real Women Have Curves Analysis
Ana Garcia, the protagonist of the film Real Women Have Curves, is a perfect example of the
contemporary Latina in the United States. She is an ideal illustration of the intersectionality between
race, culture, gender, and class. When deciding what she would do for her future, Ana had to choose
between her cultural values and mainstream expectations, between her Mexican heritage and her
American mindset. After deciding to continue her education at Columbia University, Ana holds a
feminist conference aiming to bring more attention to gender and race based discrimination within the
workplace and the unrealistic beauty standards set forth by society for women. These two issues are
particularly prevalent in the United States and have widespread effects, therefore Ana would primarily
focus on them. Both issues are applicable to Ana herself and could very easily have negative
repercussions on her own life.

desegregating occupations, which would in turn, help reduce discriminatory treatment of workers.

Margaret Sanger And The Comstock Act Of 1873
Margaret Sanger and the Comstock Act of 1873 Rough Draft
The U.S. women s movement had its beginnings in 1848 when Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia
Mott called the Seneca Falls Convention in New York to discuss the social, civil, and religious
condition and rights of woman (Women s History in the U.S....). Over time, this inspired many women
to stand up for their own beliefs and for the better for women in future generations. During World War
I, the high birth rates led to food and supply shortages, and disease which mainly affected those in
poverty (Putting Margaret Sanger s Ideas in Context). At the time, a woman s life revolved around
bringing food home and onto the table which became an issue with the lack of supplies and the best
foods would be given to men (Comstockery in America). As a nurse visiting, Margaret Sanger
witnessed and met immigrant working mothers who were deeply impacted by unexpected pregnancies
and botched miscarriages (Amory). Margaret Sanger violated the Comstock Act of 1873 of 1873
because she wanted to advocate women s rights which resulted in a conflict between Sanger and the
those against her ideas, and the laws that suppressed her from advocating. As a result, as a
compromise of the amendment of the Comstock Act after she gained support from her article and
supporters which resulted in Planned Parenthood, the ability to distribute contraceptives, and a new
found support for women to have more control over their lives. The Comstock Act in

Westpac Case Summary
a whole. This was based on an precedent from a 1970 case law in which it was held that a director of a
group of company is not in breach of his fiduciary duty if the decision was based on what a reasonable
person could consider to be an act that was in the best interest of all companies in the group. Case law
has also shown that in situations where the interest of the company and the creditor coincides, it is
legitimate for the director to consider the interests of the creditors first . However, with evidence from
the fact that the director involved in the Equiticorp case was able to invoke best interest of the group
claim 17 years after the case law obliging directors to consider creditors interest first shows that the
entity model is still applicable in Australian law . Apparently this leads to very harsh rulings for
creditors in these insolvency situations. This means that Equiticorp s ruling diminishes the only hope

A case in point is the Westpac v The Bell Group . In the Westpac case, directors facing liquidation in
1990 sought to get a bailout on the basis of assets that were legally for creditors of the company after
the 1990 insolvency. However, in 1991, the directors sought a different bailout with these assets that
were due to be confiscated. A restructuring was attempted but it failed and the providers of the bailout
sought to sue for the assets used as collateral for the bailout. This was dragged through several years
of legal proceedings and it became apparent in 2013 (12 years afterwards) that the claim was not
recoverable. This shows that the enterprise model comes with grey areas that could be exploited by
reckless directors to cause further complications for potential creditors at the verge of a fold

Helmet Safety Research Paper
Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents happen. The safest way to use your bike is for transportation,
not play. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and
at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so
serious that children die, usually from head injuries. A head injury can mean brain injury. That s why it
s so important to wear your bike helmet. Wearing one doesn t mean you can be reckless, but a helmet
will provide some protection for your face, head, and brain in case you fall down. Bike helmets are so
important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. Your helmet should have a
sticker that says it meets standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). If your

The diacylglycerol (DAG) mediated regulation of protein...
The diacylglycerol (DAG) mediated regulation of protein kinase C (PKC) family of serine/threonine
kinases plays a critical role in several intracellular signaling pathways and the pathology of several
diseases including cancer, neurological, cardiovascular, and others. In consequence, PKC isozymes are
being actively pursued as the subject of intense research and drug development. Depending on their
enzymatic properties and activation mechanism, the mammalian PKC isoenzymes have been
categorized into classical (calcium , DAG , and phospholipid dependent), novel (calcium independent,
but DAG and phospholipid dependent), and atypical (calcium and DAG independent) subgroups. The
DAGs selectively interact with the C1 domain of PKC isoenzymes. ... Show more content on

Therefore, C1 domains have become an attractive objective in designing selective PKC ligands. There
are two functionally nonequivalent C1 domains (C1a and C1b) positioned in tandem within the
regulatory domain of classical and novel PKC isozymes. The PKCα C1a and PKCθ C1b subdmains
shows higher DAG binding affinity than the C1b and C1a subdomain respectively. For PKCδ C1b/a
subdomains, conflicting results have been reported regarding their DAG binding affinity.
Accumulating evidences suggest that anionic phospholipids like PS, phosphatidic acid (PA) and
phosphatidylglycerol (PG) enhance the DAG dependent membrane binding affinity and PKC activity;
although the anionic phospholipid dependence varies considerably among the PKC isozymes. Among
the classical PKCs, PKCα and PKCβII prefer PS to PG, whereas PKCγ shows comparable affinity for
PS and PG. Among the novel PKCs, PKCδ and PKCθ show a certain degree of PS selectivity, whereas
PKCε shows preference for PA. In case of isolated C1b subdomains, similar selectivities have been
observed for PKCδ, PKCθ and PKCε. Whereas the PKCβII C1b subdomain shows little preference
between PS and PG. However, the reported experimental measurements used either only DAG or a
combination of separate DAG and anionic lipid molecules in solution or under liposomal environment

The Reproductive Rights of the Developmentally Disabled Essay
The Reproductive Rights of the Developmentally Disabled Sterilization of the developmentally

mentally retarded person was born to a family, that family had 2 choices take care of the child at
home, or it was strongly recommended that the child was sent to a state run institution or hospital. The
state institution was where this person would spend his or her entire life. Unfortunately these hospitals

Early in the twentieth century the plight of the metal retarded was ignored or dealt with primarily in
state institutions. In addition authorities regarded mentally retarded women as being sexually
promiscuous and as producing many illegitimate children (Farber 29). Because of this belief many
retarded women would be placed in state institutions at the onset of puberty and sometimes released
when they reached menopause. Many people have advocated sterilization for the retarded. Nobel Prize
winning physicist William Schockley is quoted saying that he advocated sterilization for people with
low IQs and supported a sperm bank for geniuses. A letter from Ben wood, a father of IQ testing stated
his beliefs at the education testing service in 1972 when he said: It may be said in all soberness that
professional reliefers and most other indigents who produce children thereby commit crimes against
humanity which are fully as serious as many acts now considered felonies. They have no moral right
to produce such children and therefore should have no legal right to immunity from punishment that
constructively fits the crime, such as some form of painless sterilization of both guilty parents, which
would be permanent. Before 1930 there were numerous elite groups interested in the problems of the
mentally retarded. Some of them were connected with eugenics and sterilization. However,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Armenia
In this fast changing world, cars seem to play a very significant role. As technology has developed and
improved over time the use of bicycles has decreased. Before the motor vehicle revolution, bicycles
were a great type of transport as they were effective and convenient for their simplicity of design. In
many developed countries people still use bicycles as their main mean of transportation. It seems that
this trend of using bicycles has not reached Armenia and it is considered as a novelty. The
overwhelming majority of people prefer cars to bicycles. There are many environmental and social
issues caused by an increase in the number of cars in Armenia. Thus, the Armenian government taking
measures to encourage cycling to become a widely used mode of transportation in Armenia can be
beneficial for the country as well as the people.
Encouraging people to use bicycles instead of cars will decrease the ecological and environmental
footprint people have in the country. Riding a bicycle uses no non renewable energy and emits no
pollution. Cars consume a lot of energy and natural resources even before they make it to the open
road. Their production leaves a big footprint because materials like steel, rubber, glass and paint must

The San Bernardino Shooters
On the evening of February 17, 2016, the phone of one of the San Bernardino shooters was found. The
phone was still in working condition but could not be accessed because of security measures that
could potentially wipe all the data on it. A reporter from the New York Times, Mike Isaac, informs on
the situation in depth, writing how, being a potentially huge piece of evidence, the court demanded
that the company that made the phone, Apple, create a means to either bypass or remove the
encryption on it so the FBI could access the phone s contents. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, has
refused to do this, stating that No reasonable person would find [it] acceptable to create a technique
that threatens the security of others. What started as a private issue spread like wildfire as it was made
public by Apple. This problem has created two sides that ask whether Apple should have the right to
not oblige or if the FBI has the power to force them to make these means a reality. This specific issue
opens up a greater problem that takes it outside the US and affects anyone with any kind of
technology connected around the world: should the government have the right to access information
on your phone? It s a seemingly yes or no answer, but the precedent this situation will create makes it
a lot more important as it can determine what the future of privacy on technology is like. When

Analysis Of Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself Essay
The prevalence of Hegelianism in Walt Whitman s Song of Myself is indisputable, yet a consensus on
the meaning remains elusive, and therefore, insidious to the democratic progress Whitman attempts.
Whitman uses Hegel to support his ideas about the dialectical theory of consciousness, the
spiritualization and importance of art, and America s manifest destiny. I later elucidate on these
categories and break them down into more precise ideas. I use a variety of scholars for evidence of
structural, social, artistic, and spiritual relations in Whitman s Song of Myself and Hegel s The
Phenomenology of Spirit; however, instead of celebrating these achievements, I will focus on the risk
of using Hegel as a way to interpret Whitman. I point out the reasons for both Whitman and Hegel
failing to grasp any actual use on their thoughts on consciousness. Then I proceed to explain why it is
better to focus on Whitman s view on art without using Hegel. Lastly, I showcase the dangers of
Whitman using Hegel s ideas for democratic means. The foremost idea that fails logical scrutiny is the
dialectical theory of consciousness. Hegel states ...Belief in the nothingness of necessity and in the
underworld becomes belief in Heaven because the departed self must unite with its universality, must
explicate in this universality what it contains and thus become clear to itself. (411). Hegel later
expresses his ideas about the how the spirit is conscious of itself in the conscious form (416),

Of The Irresoubleness Of Diamonds, By Monica Ferrell
Grammar consists of a wide array of concepts, meanings, and different classes of words. It can be
defined as a linguistic system that exists in the mind of a speaker of a language, a written description
of a language, and an abstract notation of an ideal set of rules (of correct or proper grammar) which
can be encoded in a handbook (Studies in English Grammar Handbook, pg.7). Monica Ferrell s, Of
the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds ,
and Beautiful Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues one of them being the known
new contract. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell intends to develop a
clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. The poems Of the Irresoubleness of
Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds and Beautiful Funeral
were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell. Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned
her BA from Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell
discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to
come into being do so poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion
and service . (Poetry Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image
for her readers to ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poem and uses a variety of forms to convey her
simple and lyrical tone throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the
strong, lyrical language she uses to convey the imagery and earnest tone. Monica Ferrell s poem, Of
the irresoubleness of Diamonds uses grammatical concepts such as attributive adjectives. There are
three examples where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives in her poem. One example where Ferrell uses
attributive adjectives is when she describes, Its delicate handle, the pictures painted there (line 3), the
word delicate appears before the noun and is modifying it. Through this example Ferrell she compares
her love for someone to a teacup, perhaps implying that it could be the amount of feelings she has for

Ursula K. LeGuin s The Left Hand of Darkness is the story of Genly Ai s travels to a strange planet

Genly Ai represents called the Ekumen . However, his journey is rather difficult due to the great
difference in societies from Genly Ai s home planet, Earth, and this new one. In Gethen, he learns that
the people are completely unsexed for the majority of their days. When they are sexed, it is only for a

LeGuin does this to reinforce the notion that Genly Ai is completely unassimilated to Gethen culture.
She does this by having Genly Ai describe him as a woman, but calling him by the male title King
where LeGuin could have had Genly Ai call Argaven monarch , a sexless title that still holds as much
accuracy. The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when
LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as
my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying,
spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply
because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females,
has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of
people and their sex.
As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him
adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named
Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68).
Here, LeGuin uses the absence of sexed description to show that Genly Ai has adjusted to the
Gethenian culture. Then, when LeGuin has Genly Ai discuss the issue of parenting he simply states,

  • 2. The Connected Lived Of Ants, Brains, And Software By... Vanessa Payan Professor Leach ARC5205 Architecture Theories 2 Fall 2016 October 20, 2016 Emergence: The Connected Lived of Ants, Brains, and Software by Steven Johnson In the introduction of the book Johnson begins by giving a narrative about the role that slime mold took in discovering emergent behavior. Biologist in time have struggled to answer questions as to how these organisms work together. The main concern about these emerging organisms was whether or not there was a controlling member who directed all other members in each of the communities. More than likely, the possible solution for any of these communities to show some sense of order would be if there were a controlling unit or what Johnson mentions as controlling agents that would be in charge of keeping the community in harmony. So how exactly has the findings about slime mold given to science? Based on what I have interpreted about the book I can say Johnson s narrative on how we find connection through emergent complex living systems would be when he begins describing about the early work of Charles Darwin when made his evolutionary discoveries at the Galapagos Islands. Because of his observational skills, which mainly focused on natural selection and factors that would lead to a species to want to evolve due to survival, this lead to wanting to understand more about what would be the true reason to want to create emergence. The art of observation soon followed later in Johnson s timeline when he gives a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Response to 13, 1977, 21 by Jonathan Lethem Alyssa M. Gonzalez 13, 1977, 21 In Jonathan Lethem s personal narrative essay, 13, 1977, 21 , Lethem reflects on when he was 13 years old, in the year 1977, where he watched the film Star Wars 21 times. But the essay is not actually about the Star Wars film. It is about the way Lethem used going to the movies to remove himself, or hide from the realities of his life, such as his mother s illness and awkward pre teenage years. The first few sentences of Lethem s essay is where he blatantly tells the readers that he s watched Star Wars twenty one times in four months. He then uses the next three paragraphs to reflect on the circumstances surrounding his trips to the movie theater in the summer of 1977 and trying to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tone could be described as witty, but also nostalgic. Along with reflecting on his trips to the movie theater, Lethem reflects on his awkward pre teen years, where it was speculated by his parents that he was gay, and he followed a girl to her ballet class. I m totally unsure, but I believe Lethem numbered each paragraph to go along with the significance of numbers in his essay. The title itself, 13, 1977, 21 , begins to make sense once he introduces the events of 1977, where he watched a film 21 times, at the age of 13. These three numbers are very significant to him because he thinks of the twenty one times he watched the movie as him maturing, almost like a Bar Mitzvah, at thirteen years old. Lethem also believed watching the movie twenty times would be too mechanically round , and that adding the one more time would be more realistic. He also ends the essay at paragraph twenty one the amount of times he went to see Star Wars. Lethem s twenty one trips to the movie theater to see Star Wars was not entirely his fascination with or liking of the movie. He used the Astor Plaza as a hiding place from the gradual loss of his mother to natural illness, and already absent father. Watching the film so many times in the summer of 1977 helped Lethem cope with his pre teenage struggles, and he describes it as when he invented himself in the vacuum collision of ... • 4. A Comparison Of Ancient Greek And Roman Civilization Throughout History many civilizations have rose and fallen but we will be analyzing Greek and Roman Civilization. Many people view the Romans as a copy cat empire compared to the Greek because they modeled so many things after the Greeks, for myself, it would be correct to assume this were true. At first during the colonial age or era, Romans and Greek heavily influenced one another which one had engaged in trade at the Black Sea the surrounding Mediterranean areas. Trading between the two nations was very successful due to the safety of Roman Military presence. Over time, the Romans had adapted many of the Greeks practices and believes. This is one of the main reasons that Roman could be seen as a copy cat of Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece and Rome both had used agriculture. However, Rome did not have much problems with production of food through agriculture like the Greeks did. Both of them had produced products like wheat, but the former, Greece, had failed to produce a good amount of wheat because Romans had far superior farming techniques. Instead of having a good production of wheat, the Greeks had substituted wheat for olive oil hence why many people think of olive oil coming from Greece. Both nations had heavily relied on slaves as well. How could a nation become so successful with running the government, thinking about important ideals, or enjoying themselves if they had to worry about how they were going to get fed? • 8. Comcast Universal Merger Case Study Company and Situation In December 2009, Comcast announced its intent to acquire a majority stake in the media conglomerate NBC Universal from General Electric (GE). The planned acquisition was subject to scrutiny from activists and government officials; their concerns primarily surrounded the potential effects of the vertical integration that the acquisition could create, as Comcast is also heavily involved in cable television and internet services in many media markets. The deal went through, resulting in Comcast owning 51% of the company until March 2013, when GE divested its stake to give Comcast sole ownership. Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts described the deal as a perfect fit for the company, as Comcast would be able to bolster its role as a creator and distributor of content, with a particular emphasis on multiplatform anytime, anywhere media that American consumers are demanding ; increasing access to NBC owned content through various platforms. The Daphnia Magna Experiment Plant compounds play a very important role in the defense of plants and in this experiment the plant defense compounds of caffeine and Kava kava were tested on Daphnia magna to test if there was a change in heartbeat of the organism. The purpose of the experiment was to see how these compounds affected the Daphnia magna. The t values for both the caffeine and Kava kava were calculated to be 1.82 and 1.62, which were both smaller than the obtained t critical value of 2.57. A conclusion was drawn that there was no statistically significant difference in heart rate after the plant defense compounds of caffeine and Kava kava were added compared to before they were added. Introduction: In this experiment two plant defensive compounds, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their bodies are encased by an uncalcified shell, carapace, and they can reach lengths of 5mm with a kidney bean shape (Ebert, 2005). The Daphnia magna live in mostly freshwater environments, but can live in certain brackish water areas. In comparing males and females the males have smaller body sizes, larger antennas a modified post abdomen (Ebert, 2005). The Daphnia magna are good test subjects to assess the effects of the plant defense compounds of caffeine and Kava kava, as they are easy to care for, inexpensive, and the effects of the compound are easily noted through looking at the heart rate of the organism under a microscope. This experiment required the use of a two tailed t test to determine whether there was a difference in heart of the Daphnia magna before and after the plant defensive compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were introduced. This test also helps to see if the difference in the test is statistically significant, which determines if the results obtained occurred by chance. A t value is obtained to get the probability value and as the t value increases it signifies a larger meaningful difference between the two groups (Blanar, 2017) and as it decreases the opposite happens. If a t value is smaller than the t critical value the null hypothesis is accepted, but if the obtained t value is larger than the t critical value the null hypothesis is rejected. A p value is also important for this experiment, as it is the probability the null hypothesis is correct. The null hypothesis for this experiment was that there was no difference in the Daphnia magna heart rate after the plant defense compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were added compared to before, while the alternative hypothesis generated was that there is a difference in the Daphnia magna heart rate after the plant defense compounds (caffeine and Kava kava) were added compared ... • 14. Inhibit Moral Behavior A moral inhibitor is a condition that hinders our moral behavior and leads to acting irrationally. It arises when the right thing to do, and the action that is being performed are not the same. In the next 600 words, I will present and explain a heuristic that inhibits moral behavior. I will then speak of a situation that is an example of a heuristic. I will also describe what steps to take in the described situation to help ensure moral behavior. Moral behavior is an aspect of our humanity that is essentially learned at a very young age. Our moral behavior is sculpted based on our culture and our surroundings. It is responsible for the actions we choose to commit. When our moral behavior is inhibited, we stray away from the right thing to do and act in ways that would seem malicious and cruel to a rational bystander. Social and situational context can explain what induces moral people to act in heinous ways. A heuristic is a mental shortcut that readily comes to mind and simplifies cognitive tasks. The solution itself is not perfect or guaranteed to be optimal, but it is enough to satisfy the immediate goals (1). HOW SHAKESPEARE PRESENTS ROMEO S FEELINGS IN ACT 1 SCENE 1 AND ACT 2 SCENE 2 Love is an important theme in most of Shakespeare s play, including in Romeo and Juliet because love is a stronger force than all the animosity and forces of fate in Romeo and Juliet. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare s play, Shakespeare explores Romeo s change in attitude to love between Rosaline and Juliet. In Act 1 Scene 1 Shakespeare introduces us to Romeo s passionate desire towards Rosaline through the use of oxymoron, monologues and vivid imagery. Indeed, the deployment of oxymoron throughout Romeo s speech such as heavy lightness or cold fire, sick health suggests that the character so overwhelmed by his feelings that he loses the sight of his common sense and spins and turns into mad love towards Rosaline. In Act 2, Scene, 2 Romeo s attitude to love shifts from an infatuated love towards Rosaline to more true and youthful love he feels for Juliet. Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries. A head injury can mean brain injury. That s why it s so important to wear your bike helmet. Wearing one doesn t mean you can be reckless, but a helmet will provide some protection for your face, head, and brain in case you fall down. Bike helmets are so important that the U.S. government has created safety standards for them. Your helmet should have a sticker that says it meets standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). If your helmet doesn t have a CPSC sticker, ask your mom or dad to get you one that does. Wear a bike helmet EVERY TIME YOU RIDE, even if you are going for a short ride. ... • 26. The diacylglycerol (DAG) mediated regulation of protein... The diacylglycerol (DAG) mediated regulation of protein kinase C (PKC) family of serine/threonine kinases plays a critical role in several intracellular signaling pathways and the pathology of several diseases including cancer, neurological, cardiovascular, and others. In consequence, PKC isozymes are being actively pursued as the subject of intense research and drug development. Depending on their enzymatic properties and activation mechanism, the mammalian PKC isoenzymes have been categorized into classical (calcium , DAG , and phospholipid dependent), novel (calcium independent, but DAG and phospholipid dependent), and atypical (calcium and DAG independent) subgroups. The DAGs selectively interact with the C1 domain of PKC isoenzymes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, C1 domains have become an attractive objective in designing selective PKC ligands. There are two functionally nonequivalent C1 domains (C1a and C1b) positioned in tandem within the regulatory domain of classical and novel PKC isozymes. The PKCα C1a and PKCθ C1b subdmains shows higher DAG binding affinity than the C1b and C1a subdomain respectively. For PKCδ C1b/a subdomains, conflicting results have been reported regarding their DAG binding affinity. Accumulating evidences suggest that anionic phospholipids like PS, phosphatidic acid (PA) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) enhance the DAG dependent membrane binding affinity and PKC activity; although the anionic phospholipid dependence varies considerably among the PKC isozymes. Among the classical PKCs, PKCα and PKCβII prefer PS to PG, whereas PKCγ shows comparable affinity for PS and PG. Among the novel PKCs, PKCδ and PKCθ show a certain degree of PS selectivity, whereas PKCε shows preference for PA. In case of isolated C1b subdomains, similar selectivities have been observed for PKCδ, PKCθ and PKCε. Whereas the PKCβII C1b subdomain shows little preference between PS and PG. However, the reported experimental measurements used either only DAG or a combination of separate DAG and anionic lipid molecules in solution or under liposomal environment to determine the DAG dependent membrane binding capabilities of the ... The Reproductive Rights of the Developmentally Disabled Essay The Reproductive Rights of the Developmentally Disabled Sterilization of the developmentally disabled or the mentally retarded is an issue that has long been debated in America. Mental retardation is defined as the inability to learn normally and develop mentally. Traditionally in America if a mentally retarded person was born to a family, that family had 2 choices take care of the child at home, or it was strongly recommended that the child was sent to a state run institution or hospital. Early in the twentieth century the plight of the metal retarded was ignored or dealt with primarily in state institutions. In addition authorities regarded mentally retarded women as being sexually promiscuous and as producing many illegitimate children (Farber 29). Because of this belief many retarded women would be placed in state institutions at the onset of puberty and sometimes released when they reached menopause. Many people have advocated sterilization for the retarded. Nobel Prize winning physicist William Schockley is quoted saying that he advocated sterilization for people with low IQs and supported a sperm bank for geniuses. A letter from Ben wood, a father of IQ testing stated his beliefs at the education testing service in 1972 when he said: It may be said in all soberness that professional reliefers and most other indigents who produce children thereby commit crimes against humanity which are fully as serious as many acts now considered felonies. They have no moral right to produce such children and therefore should have no legal right to immunity from punishment that constructively fits the crime, such as some form of painless sterilization of both guilty parents, which would be permanent. Before 1930 there were numerous elite groups interested in the problems of the mentally retarded. Some of them were connected with eugenics and sterilization. However, ... As technology has developed and improved over time the use of bicycles has decreased. Before the motor vehicle revolution, bicycles were a great type of transport as they were effective and convenient for their simplicity of design. In many developed countries people still use bicycles as their main mean of transportation. It seems that this trend of using bicycles has not reached Armenia and it is considered as a novelty. The overwhelming majority of people prefer cars to bicycles. There are many environmental and social issues caused by an increase in the number of cars in Armenia. Thus, the Armenian government taking measures to encourage cycling to become a widely used mode of transportation in Armenia can be beneficial for the country as well as the people. Encouraging people to use bicycles instead of cars will decrease the ecological and environmental footprint people have in the country. Riding a bicycle uses no non renewable energy and emits no pollution. Cars consume a lot of energy and natural resources even before they make it to the open road. • 33. Analysis Of Walt Whitman s Song Of Myself Essay The prevalence of Hegelianism in Walt Whitman s Song of Myself is indisputable, yet a consensus on the meaning remains elusive, and therefore, insidious to the democratic progress Whitman attempts. Whitman uses Hegel to support his ideas about the dialectical theory of consciousness, the spiritualization and importance of art, and America s manifest destiny. I later elucidate on these categories and break them down into more precise ideas. I use a variety of scholars for evidence of structural, social, artistic, and spiritual relations in Whitman s Song of Myself and Hegel s The Phenomenology of Spirit; however, instead of celebrating these achievements, I will focus on the risk of using Hegel as a way to interpret Whitman. I point out the reasons for both Whitman and Hegel failing to grasp any actual use on their thoughts on consciousness. Then I proceed to explain why it is better to focus on Whitman s view on art without using Hegel. Lastly, I showcase the dangers of Whitman using Hegel s ideas for democratic means. The foremost idea that fails logical scrutiny is the dialectical theory of consciousness. Hegel states ...Belief in the nothingness of necessity and in the underworld becomes belief in Heaven because the departed self must unite with its universality, must explicate in this universality what it contains and thus become clear to itself. • 36. Of The Irresoubleness Of Diamonds, By Monica Ferrell Grammar consists of a wide array of concepts, meanings, and different classes of words. It can be defined as a linguistic system that exists in the mind of a speaker of a language, a written description of a language, and an abstract notation of an ideal set of rules (of correct or proper grammar) which can be encoded in a handbook (Studies in English Grammar Handbook, pg.7). Monica Ferrell s, Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds , and Beautiful Funeral each employ four different grammatical issues one of them being the known new contract. By incorporating these grammatical issues into her work, Ferrell intends to develop a clear and sharp image to ignite the imagination of her readers. The poems Of the Irresoubleness of Diamonds , Harmless, As Recalled by a Fairy Tale , Gerburt des Monicakinds and Beautiful Funeral were written by poet and novelist Monica Ferrell. Monica Ferrell was born in New Dehli. She earned her BA from Harvard University and MFA from Columbia University (Poetry Foundation). Ferrell discusses the role of uncertainty in her poems. She states, I m trying to let something that wants to come into being do so poetry as uncovering, rather than invention or rhetoric, and a form of devotion and service . (Poetry Foundation). By using several grammar techniques Ferrell paints a bright image for her readers to ponder upon. Ferrell is an atypical poem and uses a variety of forms to convey her simple and lyrical tone throughout them. One of the reasons that I chose her poems is because of the strong, lyrical language she uses to convey the imagery and earnest tone. Monica Ferrell s poem, Of the irresoubleness of Diamonds uses grammatical concepts such as attributive adjectives. There are three examples where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives in her poem. One example where Ferrell uses attributive adjectives is when she describes, Its delicate handle, the pictures painted there (line 3), the word delicate appears before the noun and is modifying it. Through this example Ferrell she compares her love for someone to a teacup, perhaps implying that it could be the amount of feelings she has for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The best show of Genly Ai s awkward understanding of sex in this manner is, perhaps, when LeGuin has Genly Ai describe the owner of his apartment building when he says, I though of him as my landlady, for he has a fat buttocks that wagged as he walked, and a soft fat face, and a prying, spying, ignoble, kindly nature (48). LeGuin has Genly Ai describe his landowner as a woman simply because of some of his physical features. LeGuin, using adjectives that describe exclusively females, has shown that Genly Ai is completely unable to assimilate to Gethen by giving up his perceptions of people and their sex. As the novel progresses, LeGuin has Genly Ai s descriptions become a little less sexed to show him adjusting to Gethen s sexual culture. Later in the novel, LeGuin has Genly Ai meet a character named Faxe, she has him describe Faxe as having one of the most beautiful human faces [he] ever saw (68).
