John Edgar Wideman begins his piece, Our Time, with a description of the world he grew up in.
He takes the reader through the story of his brother, Robby, using a variety of voices and points of
view. In this narration of his brother s life he brings to light his own dilemma with writing the piece.
He uses a variety of voices and points of view to demonstrate the different perspectives of Robby s
story. To contest the ethical dilemma of telling someone else s story without exploiting it, Wideman
addresses the issue head on. By reading Our Time, a writer could learn much from Wideman, and
adopt a number of his methods for different writing styles.
One of Wideman s main writing methods is his use of multiple voices and points of view. This
becomes apparent even in the first page of the text. Wideman introduces his essay with a letter. It
is not addressed to anyone, neither is it signed, but, it is written as if every character in his story
was speaking. The tone is his own, the subject is his brother, Robby, and parts of the letter reveal
advise from Garth and his mother. This presentation of a multi narrative style is present throughout
the essay. It gives the reader a sense of authenticity that cannot be achieved through third person
narration because it places the audience in the mindset of the person speaking. By switching points
of view, Wideman is providing the reader with multiple perceptions of a scenario, giving a different
lens of analysis

Liberals believe the causes of war are miscommunication, mistrust, and misperceptions. As a
solution, Immanuel Kant, a German philosopher, believed that to overcome international anarchy

your flu shot yet? Anyone and everyone is a candidate for the flu vaccine according to local
pharmacies. (and many people are buying into this mantra). Millions of Americans will receive
the flu vaccination without a doctor s note or regard to any underlying conditions. The only
question asked is, Can you roll up your sleeve for me? Many blindly receive the flu vaccine
without question and assume that it is effective without factual knowledge. In the healthcare
system it is a requirement to get vaccinated, unless one wishes to be sectioned off and forced to
wear a mask during work. Mandatory vaccinations have been enacted among some employers
pushing employees to receive the vaccination. This is despite their views, concerns, or questions in
regards to the safety and effectiveness of the flu vaccination. There is much debate over whether

Family Secrets In Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
As I read Fun Home, often reading chapters more than once, I had quite a few questions floating
around inside my head. Alison Bechdel dedicates her memoir to Mom, Christian, and John. We
did have a lot of fun, in spite of everything . I found it odd that she didn t include her father in this
as well. After all, without her father, she would not have had much of a story. He was the glue that
held the whole dysfunctional familytogether and it was his mysterious and depraved manner that
compelled me to turn each twisted page. Bechdel also mentions her family again in the
acknowledgments at the end of her book, Thanks to Helen, Christian, and John Bechdel for not

The only thing I wasn t a huge fan of was Bechdel s exorbitant vocabulary throughout the entire
232 pages of her book. Reading through each chapter took a lot of stop and go on my part. I
found myself taking short breaks to define pretentious sentences Alison compounded in an
attempt to elevate her comic book autobiography to a higher intellectual level. For example, in
chapter four, Alison remembers a trip to New York City with her brothers and Roy. Alison

was suddenly plentiful and relatively cheap households paid the water cooperative between two
and five dollars a month to cover the costs of running the pump and maintaining the system. [4].
Through the foundation of a new, inexpensive water source, this well provided water to 210
families. The expenses are covered by the townspeople, whom collectively can fund cheaper water

As for people without public access nor locally funded water sources struggle to survive with

The movie Star Trek and 1984 are similar because they both include torturing, pain, and the force
for winning over. In both of the story, both Picard and Winston were inserted in some sort of
device into their body which when O Brien or Madred press the button, the level of pain will
decrease or increase. The only answers that are acceptable to them, is the answers that they want,
not the actual right answer. In Star Trek, Madred asked Picard how many lights there are and
Picard responded with four lights, but what Madred wanted to hear was five lights. Because
Picard did not give the right answer that Madred wanted, Madred pressed the button which

In the short story The Locket, it is believed that the author Chaplains writing style has kept the
readers guessing throughout the story. Many would agree that the ending of the story was a
shocker and few expected that conclusion. They would agree that the father in law proceeding with
the funeral arrangements supporting the assumption the deceased person in the coffin was
Edmund because he had the locket around his neck played into the authors plot twist. People
would also say that the end of the story was intriguing, especially when Octavia opened the letter
from the priest, returning her locket to her expressing his sorrow of the death of her husband
Edmund. Only to find out at the very end Edmund was not dead and he was waiting for her at the
door.
In the conclusion of the story, many would say they didn t really know what was going to happen
in the end of the book. Chaplain threw a curve ball and surprised all at the ending of the story. The
writer did a very good job of confusing readers that the man at the campfire that died was Edmund.
Allowing everyone to conclude even the priest character played into this misdirection that Edmund

for decades. Although the debate continues, the landscape of health care in the US is certainly
about to change as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) was enacted on

When we add the fact that the new health care bill will cost $940 billion over 10 years, we are
talking about an epic cost to deliver medical care to US citizens. Unlike FDR s New Deal, which
was a response to a severe financial and economic calamity, the Great Society initiatives came just
as the United States post war prosperity was starting to fade, but before the coming decline was
being felt by the middle and upper classes. President Kennedy proposed a tax cut lowering the top
marginal rate by 20 percent, from 91 percent to 71 percent, which was enacted in February 1964 by
Lyndon Johnson. GNP rose 10 percent in the first year of the tax cut and economic growth
averaged a rate of 4.5 percent from 1961 to 1968. Disposable personal income rose 15 percent in
1966 alone. Federal revenues increased dramatically from $94 billion in 1961 to $150 billion in
1967. As the Baby Boom generation aged, two and a half times more Americans entered the labor
force between 1965 and 1980 than between 1950 and 1965. As a result, the war on poverty seemed
