Rising Cost Of California Essay
The Rising Cost of Tuition in California State Universities
The cost of tuition for California State Universities has skyrocketed over the last 10 years. It has
forced many students to take out expensive student loans to complete their educational goals, often
times leaving graduating college students steep in debt as they enter the workforce. Some of the
contributing factors that I am going to address are inflation, the rising cost of living and the varying
costs of different educational institutions
Webster s dictionary defines inflation: as a continuing rise in the general price level usually attributed
to an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods and services. During the
last 10 years we have seen and felt the effects of inflation. Services and goods have gone up in price,
but the minimum wage for most Californians stayed the same for a number of years. Inflation is a key
factor that has affected tuition costs in most universities and has helped contribute to the steady rise.
Public and private schools each typically have their own college inflation rate, which ... Show more

Inflation definitely has played a role and will continue to do so in the future as the economy changes
and adapts. It is clear that in the last ten years tuition cost spiked and in some areas doubled. The cost
of living was also a contributing factor for the spiked tuition costs. California Universities are amongst
some of the best in the nation, but they come with a price tag that unfortunately many cannot afford.
Finally the varying universities and the quality of the programs often dictate the costs. This was clear
in the comparison between Fresno State and California Polytechnic State. Both offer quality education
in specific fields for the right price. As some would say, A good education is not cheap, and a cheap
education is not

Carl Sandburg Vs John Mcphee Essay
Carl Sandburg vs John McPhee
How do Carl Sandburg and John McPhee writings attitudes towards his subjects affect your reaction?
Questions that need to be answered to write a response are does Carl Sandburg and John McPhee
convey why his subject is important? Is the description of Abraham Lincoln or Arthur Ashe better?
What main impression does each writer want to convey? How did the writers attitudes toward the
subjects affect my reaction?
The first question to answer is how does Carl Sandburg and John McPhee convey why his subject is
important? The writing of A Lincoln Preface is a upstanding writing that Carl Sandburg wrote. Carl
describes extremely well what Lincoln looked like and how Lincoln was a good person. Carl also put
his own interpretation into his writing. For example on page 456 Carl wrote He is the chosen
spokesman you can tell that he loved the way Lincoln spoke and he put his own opinion on it. John
McPhee did the same thing in his writings. John knew how his character was it was almost like he
knew the person because he knew his mother died and how Arthur Ashe died too. Also John McPhee
also used his own interpretation in his writing. He made it feel like you were at the game with Arthur
yourself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of the story s have a great description of their characters. In Carl Sandburg s writing, he
described Abraham Lincoln well. He described his hat and what kind of clothes he wore. He also
talked about the writer of Uncle Tom s Cabin being short. In John McPhee story he told us about
Arthur and that he was African American and what he looked like and how he was raised. For readers

Black and white has different experience in life. I have never heard that objection with bodies in black
community too. This reminded me of president clinton. That surprise me that he didn t had a problem
with black. This is how racism has start in this world. Cultural critic bell hooks has written: The black
body has always received attention within the framework of white supremacy, as racist/sexist
iconography has been deployed to perpetuate notions of innate biological inferiority. Against this
cultural backdrop, every movement for black liberation in this society, whether reformist or radical,
has had to formulate a counter hegemonic discourse of the body to effectively resist white supremacy.

Being A Crime Scene Investigator Essay
Being a crime scene investigator looks fun to do on movies but in real life it is hard work. You have to
get in good colleges if you would to be one. A crime scene investigator is a specially trained police
officer who is dispatched to a crime scene. You have to collect evidence the evidence might include
blood, hair, thumb prints, and etc. You have to collect the evidence and try to figure out what
happened.
When you look at a scene you need the right equipment with you. If you don t have the right and you
have bad equipment nothing would help you figure out what happened. When you find thumbprints
you need napkins, black and white films, brushes, lift tape, and etc. For every little part of the
evidence you need the right equipment for everything. You need to always bring a notebook with you
so you can write down the evidence you find. Having good equipment is really important.
Criminal justice is one of the most popular majors in America. You always want to get in the right

decided to ban the sale and drinking of alcohol, this was period was called The Prohibition . People
continued to want to drink and this lead people to go to illegal bars or speakeasies which sprang up all

The arrest of the bookkeeper should be fairly easy but Ness finds himself in with for reasons. Being a
caring person he is helps a woman struggling to bring her baby up the stairs. While doing this Ness
recognizes one of the gang members, taking out his gun he single handedly defeats all the members of
the gang while at the same time protecting the baby. Ness and Stone walk out the station unharmed
and with the bookkeeper.
Brian de Palma has used a variety of sound techniques to create a feeling of suspense and tension for
the audience. Dialogue, sounds effects, ambient sounds and non diegetic sounds have all been used to
reinforce what the audience see. The content of the station scene is expressed through Ness s dialogue.
He informs the audience of what is happening by what he says to other characters on and off screen.
Sound effects have also used successfully to add realism so the audience can believe that what they re
seeing is actually happening. Non diegetic sounds also played a big part in the station scene. It
changes the mood of the audience from feeling excited to feeling tense and uncomfortable. First there
were drums which made the audience feel Ness s tension as he tried to find the bookkeeper. Mobile
music is then added, creating more tension showing now that Ness

Bunker Mexico
What is also intriguing about Bunker s study of Mexico is that the changes that were being accepted
by the Mexican population were very often complete contradictions to what was considered
traditionally Mexican. Not only does this stand in complete opposition to what was seen in Karush s
Argentina, but in Mexico the constant reworking of consumer goods and the texts used to sell them...
generated the cultural meaning that provided an identity for both the self and the world around them.
(Bunker 97) Once again, Mexico and Argentina could not be any different when seen through the lens
of Consumer Culture and Culture of Class. The strict devotion of the government in Argentina to keep

Each author in his or her own way masterfully employs images in order to better support their overall
claims. Within her text, Workers Go Shopping, Milanesio expertly employs multiple photos of
Argentinians moving about their daily lives to illustrate how the importation of western culture so
greatly affected the emerging middle, and working class consumers. This gives great backing to her
thesis of how the emerging working class so greatly affected the transformation of Argentina into a
modern 20th century nation. Photos of the Argentinian people enjoying modern luxuries like dance
halls and vacations to the beach, are accompanied by advertisements from magazines and street
billboards which further illuminate the consumer culture which had engulfed the nation by mid
century. Milanesio also employs images to illustrate how the importation of western culture also
propagated gender roles for not only women, but men as well. Documents taken directly from
Argentinian media of the day can be seen encouraging women to aspire for beauty, but also
submissiveness. The propagation of the housewife myth, visible here in the Argentinian media, was a
very prevalent force in the society of the United States at this time and can be assumed to have been
heavily influenced by their neighbors to the north. Ads directed to women for sewing machines and
kitchen appliances were mirrored by ones pointed to men which embedded ideals of masculinity and
hard work. These advertisements not only encouraged an overall image of what Argentinian people
should aspire to, but also expanded the consumer market, thereby promoting consumerism. These
photographs of Argentinians enjoying the newfound luxuries of modernity and consumer society gives
great backing to Milanesio s thesis of how the

Viva Villefort Quotes
Has a bad decision ever caused you to lose something, or lack something that you wanted? Two texts,
one being a book titled The Count of Monte Cristo, and the other being a song named Viva la Vida,
share this as one of their common themes. The Count of Monte Cristo is a book written in historical
fiction. This book features a main character named Edmund Dantes, who has a nice life with his
fiancee and a well paying job, before being placed in jail with complete innocence after being tried
unfairly. The man who tried him is named Villefort. His decision at the time was purely out of
personal benefit, after the note that Edmund had was going to be delivered to Villefort s father and

In the song Viva la Vida the writer wrote, I used to rule the world, Seas would rise when I gave the
word, Now in the morning I sleep alone, Sweep the streets I used to own, (Cold Play, Lines 1 4) This
quote of the song reaveals how King Louis XVI had extreme arrogance of his kingdom, leading to his
constant pride, and revealing how his decisions caused downfall. It also conveys how he didn t think
about the well being of his kingdom, which then caused them to revolt after he made too many
incompetent choices. The book The Count of Monte Cristo also provides imagery when the author
writes, He s carrying away the body of my son! He tried to run after Monte Cristo, but, as in a
nightmare, he felt his feet rooted to the floor. (Dumas, 485) This authors quote provides the imagery
of something you love being carried away as if in a nightmare. The quote put into the story is what the
readers need in order to understand how he was ripped of his perfect life, just like Edmund was years
ago. Both of these quotes show how these authors used loss of everything due to decisions as a

that everyone was gravitating to all the outer tables against the wall and front windows. Secondly, that

Evaluative Analysis: The Shawshank Redemption When it comes to movies, I am not exactly what
you could consider well versed. Had it not been for several close friends of mine, I would have never
even seen blockbuster hits such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, or Back to the Future. The
reason for this is not because I dislike watching movies, but rather due to the restrictive nature of my
parents. Thus, I have not had the privilege to enjoy The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont s
1994 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, until recently. Due to countless positive reviews and the
recommendations of friends, I anticipated that it would be a must see for those mature enough to
appreciate its commentary on the human condition. After viewing the flick, I can certainly verify The
Shawshank Redemption deserves its must see status, as it contains such relatable themes and excellent
cinematic techniques. Various themes are presented in the film; however, the most prevalent of these
themes are the severity of isolation and the redeeming qualities of hope. The Shawshank Redemption
follows the story of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover,
and his time spent at the Shawshank prison, as well as Andy s eventual escape. Early on, it becomes
extremely evident that those imprisoned at Shawshank must deal with unbearable isolation on multiple
levels. Shawshank

Neil Postman
Throughout the span of the past few weeks I have traversed the globe, visiting several countries and
regions, only to realize that although new methods develop, language as a way of expressing ones self
has remained the most effective. Despite this fact, language still has its pitfalls. Neil Postman, in his
essay #8220;Defending Against the Indefensible, #8221; outlines seven concepts that can be used to
aid a student in better understanding the language as a means of communication. He describes how
modern teaching methods leave a student vulnerable to the #8220;prejudices of their elders #8221;,
further stating that a good teacher must always be skeptical. He urges teachers of all subjects to break
free from traditional teachings as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Postman argues that if a student were to see hidden meaning in a word, then they could use it to their
defense. It is my belief that Postman may be correct now, what about in the future. If attention were
turned to smaller words, then surely our vocabulary will diminish, and the same thing that happened to
words such as true, and false, will happen to words such as semantic, and pedagogical. Vocabulary
tests should be left as they are. If a student wishes to study words of everyday use, read a book, or
watch television. The next principle was thought provoking as well. The use of a metaphor as a tool in
education is rarely used, as Postman notes. #8220;Unless our students are aware of how metaphors
shape arguments, organize perceptions, and control feelings, their understanding is severely limited.
Postman displays how most political speeches are laced with metaphors, and how teacher #8217;s
methods are shaped by a metaphor. A student who doesn #8217;t understand a metaphor, or when it is
being applied tends to have a more closed outlook. A metaphor, used as a communication skill, is best
described in a political way. Think of Reagan #8217;s Voodoo economics, or Bill Clinton building a
bridge to the 21st century. Politicians can easily scam an ignorant voter, should one not understand a
metaphor. For example: Clinton refers to building a bridge, but does not tell us with which tools he

Criticism of Oscar Wilde s The Picture of Dorian Gray
The novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, written by Oscar Wilde originally appeared in Lippincott s
Monthly Magazine in 1890. It was then published in 1891, in book form, containing six additional
chapters with revisions. The first reviews of Dorian Gray were mostly unfavorable. It was condemned
for its speculative treatment of immoral or at least uncomfortable subjects. A review in the St. James s
Gazette by Samuel Henry Jeyes, journalist and biographer was titled A Study in Puppydom. Jeyes
refers to Wilde s idle, effeminate characters in the book and writes: The puppies appear to fill up the

Wilde s lifestyle may have caused him to be snubbed in certain social situations. It maybe that he drew
on his own experiences to create the atmosphere of scandal in the last chapters, even though, other
than murder, the protagonist s sins are never named and only briefly alluded to.
Wilde was obviously upset by the public controversy concerning moral issues that occurred after the
appearance in Lippincott s. The reason he added the six additional chapters was to take on more of a
conventional Victorian nature and to tone down the passages which may have been described as homo
erotic in spirit.
The prejudice against Wilde is best demonstrated in the reviews of his previous short stories and prose
fiction as compared to Dorian Gray. Even though his works are consistent in style and theme, while
Dorian Gray was criticized severely, the earlier stories were praised not only for their morality but also
for their literary competence.
He had earned temporary notoriety for his earlier works but with the novel, as

The Impact Of Religious Culture In Giovanni Boccaccio s...
Religious culture in Italy grew and developed in several ways over its span of existence. It was also a
time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the different aspects
of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing that it determined
their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time period that are used for
current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In particular, Giovanni Boccaccio s
Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the religious culture during the 1350 s,
which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional short stories gave people a different
side of the story and how people truly regarded religion during this time. Currently, people who read
these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious culture was back then and it gives a different
thought process, seeing that while it is not particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious
culture. Specifically, the story he tells us in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious
culture of Italy during that time and how seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much
that one man lived a horrid life and still managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried
there. Religious culture over the years has changed in hundreds of ways, with copious different
aspects to deal with and different statements about what should be

Analytical Essay Of The Book Of Jude
The self entitled book written around 75 AD as the half brother of Jesus himself, the book of Jude was
written to correct false witnesses and teachings. Because of this, the book is only chapter. Heresay was
a large problem at the time, given that correct information did not spread as easily as it does now. Jude
talked frequently about true salvation Christ, as people had begun to distort and proclaim that they
could get into heaven through just good deeds, but he addresses this in verses 24 25 saying Him who
is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with
great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and

Training For A Training Program
A training program can be used to effectively improve the ability of an interviewer to conduct more
accurate interviews with job candidates. To attain this accuracy, it is important to base a training
program on well researched and empirical data. In developing a possible program for training
interviewers, it will be necessary to discuss some of the elements that can be used for a training
program. Additionally, training programs will need to be comprised of key components and a solid
process to ensure the program is effective. However, a training program is only as successful as the
results it produces. Therefore, the last section will explore ways to evaluate the effectiveness of a
training program. Training Program Elements and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of these elements play an important role in the overall training process and will serve to assist
interviewers in achieving more consistent ratings. Training is important because interviewers gain
very little useful information from their day to day interviewing experiences (Cascio Aguinis, 2011).
Minimal gains from going through multiple interviews makes sense, since interviewers would have
nothing to compare their interviewing experiences to, or have any consistent method to learn more
effective ways of conducting interviews and assigning ratings. Furthermore, training is necessary for
interviewers to improve their skills, rather than perpetuate poor ones, and is best when experience
combines with high levels of cognitive complexity (Cascio Aguinis, 2011). Therefore, it is critical for
an interviewer training program to have elements like learning and analysis, which adds cognitive
complexity by providing a base of information and clear examples for participants to observe. Overall,
experience alone will not suffice in allowing improvements to occur for an interviewer, and training is
necessary to improve decision making and accuracy during interviews. Key Components As
mentioned previously, a key component when conducting a training program is to clearly define the
purpose of the training. The role of interviewers is to accurately rate their perceptions of an applicant
and evaluate those perceptions in relation to job requirements, as outlined by a job

Being A Nanny Research Paper
I have been a nanny for the last 8 years. I have worked with newborns, toddlers, boys, girls, and a
teenager with autism. I created meals whenever they were needed. I supplied a healthy and happy
environment. I drove them places to stimulate their mind and have fun while learning. I was actually a
communications aid which was a privilege to be part of their family in seeing how children with
severe autism learn more with the senses because they do not have the abilities and motor skills that
people are born with. Three of my favorite things about being a nanny are creating activities for them
to do when they are bored. I love making the schedule for the day and being the one that sets the pace

Language And Development Of Language, Experience,...
Language plays a significant role in the process of transmitting knowledge and culture among
mankind. Everyone learns a language at the early stages of life. From birth to seven years, a
tremendous development of language skills is seen in a child. The essay states the various
developmental phases of phonetics, morphology, semantics and syntax in a child. The behaviourist
and cognitive theories states that nature and nurture plays a vital role in this process. The essay also
throws light on the importance of culture, experience, maturation and readiness with the aid of
theories laid by Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget.

From this stage a child even begins to grasp the
meaning of short phrases such as #39;give me #39;, do not touch #39; and the like. In the next phase
of language
development, the child articulates words. The child picks up simple words from its surroundings
and that which may be taught him. He associates the words with its meaning (Kuhl et al., 2016).
The development of semantic skills take place here. In the later phase, sentence formation begins. In
the beginning, grammar and the conventional way of sentence structure is lacked. From here
commences the syntactic development in an individual. Through experiences and expressions, the
child unknowingly adapts to the accepted grammar and conventional sentence construction rules of
its language ((Bloom, 1993). By the age of four a child speaks and understands his language clearly.
A child is inspired by surroundings to develop its language skills. He or she imitates and reacts to
the sounds around them. B. F. Skinner, one of the pioneers of behaviourism, emphasizes the role of
environment in language development (Sommerville, 2006). He argues that a child learns words by
associating it with meanings. The word #39;cat #39; brings the idea of that particular animal in the
child #39;s
mind. Children imitate words and sentences used by parents and elders. According to him, children
learn language on the basis of reinforcement principles. Adults surrounding them, especially parents

Reflection About Sports
My life has consisted of many sports. Sports has been a part of my life for a while now every since I
can remember. The sports I played throughout the years has been baseball, football, soccer, and I ran
track. Throughout the years I played these sports has been some challenging times and injuries that
have happened to me.
Injuries and challenges always have an impact on a athletes abilities and there physical and mental
wanting to keep on playing. One challenge I had playing some of these sports is the coaches. Some
coaches you have through your high school or athletic career will help you and assist you. One coach I
had for track was the total opposite of that, instead of helping us, all she would do is criticize
everything that a person would do wrong and ignore the team if they had questions. She wouldn t help
us resolve our problem and I found that as a challenge for me because if I needed help on some tips
for running, she would not help. How I responded to this situation is by talking to her about the ways
she coaches. She didn t respond very well to what I had to say but at least I stood up and said
something. She learned that I didn t like how she was coaching and that s how I resolved my situation
with her. Many individuals tend to become uninterested, uncommitted, and unmotivated for many
reasons. The reasons they have could be resolved very easily. Some of the reasons I have heard
throughout the years is that the training is too hard. Training is supposed to be hard, you aren t going
to be the best unless you train hard. Another complaint I have heard is that the coaches are mean.
Some coaches are mean and some coaches are mean for a reason. Some coaches that is the only way
they know. Pushing athletes to the wall has been a coaching thought for many years and most coaches
I had, went by that mindset. The last reason I think people become uninterested in sports or physical
activity is that there not getting any results. The fact of the matter is; it is not just working out that s
going to get you the results. There are many factors that go into progressing and getting that result you
want. Your diet has a lot to do with getting that result so you got to make sure you are eating right.

The Milgram Obedience Study
Throughout history, many individuals have followed cruel leaders such as Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin
Dada, Leopold II of Belgium, who are responsible for a combined total of over 19,000,000 casualties
(McLeod, Mishkov). A leader is supposed to be a person with confidence, skills, knowledge, and
power; however Adolf Hitler was a corrupt leader who was able to convince the Germans that all Jews
were bad and that all negative things happen because of the Jews. Adolf Hitler was even able to
reinterpret the Bible and make the Germans believe he was right. Humans more easily obey a leader

Imagery of Blood, Light and Clothing in Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Imagery, the art of making images, the product of imagination (Merriam
Webster). Shakespeare uses many forms of imagery in his writing of Macbeth. Three main forms of
imagery in this play are blood, light and darkness, and clothing. Within each form of this imagery
Shakespeare incorporates symbols that the reader must understand if they are to interpret either the
passage or the play as a whole. In Macbeth blood symbolizes many things. We have all known blood
to represent life, death, and often injury. In the play, Shakespeare uses blood to represent treason, guilt,

Such as seen on pg.124 Act I scene v when lady Macbeth asks the spirits Make thick my blood. In this
quote she wants to make herself insensitive towards the deeds that she is about to commit. Towards
the end of the play blood symbolizes guilt. This is best seen on pg. 176 Act V scene ii, when Lady
Macbeth states Out, damned spot! Out, I say! One: two: why, then tis time to do t. In this quote Lady
Macbeth is remembering the night of the murder. It is the guilt in her soul that is making hr have these
recurring nightmares. The last symbolism of blood is on pg.
185 Act II scene viii when Macduff states I have no words: my voice is in my sword, thou bloodier
villian than terms can give thee out! In this quote the imagery of blood again begins to deal with
honor. The second form of imagery Shakespeare uses is light and darkness. In the play
Macbeth Shakespeare uses the witches, the guilt in Macbeth s soul, and the darkness of the night to
establish the atmosphere. The immoral scenes of the play seem to take place at night. For instance, the
vision of the dagger, the murder of Duncan, the murder of
Banquo, and Lady Macbeth s sleep walking. In the opening scene the witches set the mood of the play.

Differences Between The Book And In The Bedroom
The movie, In the Bedroom, and in the story, Killings, both type of media have very different tones.
The differences between the two tones initiates from the beginning of the movie and the story. The
movie, begins with a happier tone than the original story, where the tone originates from the funeral
scene. Within the book, Dubus uses foreshadowing that helps create the tone that suggests to the
reader something is coming. However, in contrast, the director of In the Bedroom, Todd Field, Field
started the movie with a happy and calm scene which usually implies a happy story, but later

throughout the story to show the anger and the grief the family endured after Frank s murder. Dubus
decided to begin the story with Frank s funeral and the family s emotions and thoughts about Frank s

using the Star Wars script children fail to grasp the complexities of the events that have, or are, taking

money that is generated from oil falls into the hands of elites which directly impacts the country s
ability to democratize. In Nigeria, oil revenues have been the primary lubricant in making democracy
work (O Neil, Fields, and Share 760). Politicians have rigged elections by promising money and
positions of power to citizens to guarantee votes. This is problematic because Nigerians are not having
their voices heard. They are being bribed with money and power to vote for a politician, which is
enticing in a country where the citizens live below the poverty line. This not only hinders democracy,
but is a breeding ground for violence (O Neil, Fields, and Share). In Angola, the government aims to
keep corruption and other abuses of power a secret from Angolans. The state owns most newspapers
and the only television station, so they tend to show government propaganda in favor of the state only.

Glucocorticoids Research Paper
Glucocorticoids are well known for their analgesic, anti inflammatory, immune modulating, and
antiemetic effects.
A. Anti Inflammatory and Immunosuppressive Effects
Glucocorticoids dramatically reduce the manifestations of inflammation. This is due to their profound
effects on the concentration, distribution, and function of peripheral leukocytes and to their
suppressive effects on the inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and on other mediators of
inflammation. Inflammation, regardless of its cause, is characterized by the extravasation and
infiltration of leukocytes into the affected tissue. These events are mediated by a complex series of
interactions of white cell adhesion molecules with those on endothelial cells and are inhibited by
glucocorticoids. After a single dose of a glucocorticoid, the concentration of neutrophils in the
circulation increases while the lymphocytes (T and B cells), monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils
decrease. The changes are maximal at 6 hours and are dissipated in 24 hours. The increase in
neutrophils is due both to the increased influx into the blood from the bone marrow and to the

In practice, dexamethasone is less widely used for control of PONV by anesthetists in gastrointestinal
patients, perhaps because of a lack of proven efficacy in these patients. However, its use is advocated
in some enhanced recovery programs (ERAS) to improve recovery after colorectal surgery. Its precise
mechanism of action is unknown but it has been proposed that the antiemetic properties arise due to
activation of glucocorticoid receptors in the medulla, or by inhibiting central production of
prostaglandins or inhibiting the release of endogenous opioids. It is also known to improve appetite,
and in combination with reduced nausea and vomiting, aids early recovery. Glucocorticoids can also
reduce pain by suppression of bradykinin and neuropeptides from nerve

Arthur Miller s Influence On American Theater
A life of fame, luxury, and well known plays, this was unquestionably the life of Arthur Miller who is
one of America s well known playwrights of the twentieth century. His impact on American theater is
still recognized today and will continue to be looked at for years to come. However Miller will not
only be recognized by his plays, but by his high profile marriage, his work in politics and the list goes
on. Arthur miller is viewed through American literature by his life, literary works, and impact on
American theater. Born in New York City, New York on October 17, 1915, by two Polish immigrants
Isidore and Augusta Miller. In Millers early years, his father was a successful business owner
providing a luxury life for his family. Due to the start of the great depression in the late 1920 s, his
business collapsed and this had a big impact on Millers life. Centola stats in a biography, This sudden
collapse of the familiar world was a crucial experience in Miller s life, and he would later frequently
draw on the tensions that were created by that severe economic crisis in his writings (Centola). After
high school miller will eventually attended the University of Michigan in 1934, this is where Millers
playwriting career began. There, in addition to engaging in occasional journalistic efforts, he
effectively launched his playwriting career; by the time he graduated with a BA in 1938, he had seen
his own dramas performed and had received several honors (Centola). After

Jazz Essay
Jazz
John F. Szwed resides in Connecticut, and he is currently a professor of anthropology, African
American studies, music, and American studies at Yale University. He has written seven books on
music and African American culture and numerous articles and reviews on similar subjects. Szwed has
received honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Rockefeller Foundation Humanities
Fellowship.
Knowledge of jazz has fallen far behind its development. Most people do not know the facts on jazz,
only some generalities and stereotypes. Often being called America s only original art form, jazz
began as an ethnic music, but there is much more to jazz than music. It is difficult to think of jazz
without thinking of African American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The musicians have to be incredibly creative to do this, but it is kind of unrealistic. They are expected
to sound different from other musicians and from themselves each time they perform. Another form is
composition, which is when they play music they have already written. Arranging is when the
musicians make a plan that they agree to play by beforehand. This is supposed to give shape to their
performance. Out of these three forms, the jazz musicians usually choose improvisation over the
others.
When listening to jazz, people hear it different ways. Some people like the physical level and others
use more intellect. Many keep score, make lists of names, and guess the outcomes of the music.
People listen to recordings or attend live performances. Listening to recordings is not even close to
being at a performance. Recordings are usually only a few minutes long, but performances can last an
hour or longer. There has to be an interaction between the performers and the audience to get the full
effect of jazz. Jazz was performed wherever there was space and demand. The music first came about
and still is popular in nightclubs. Small clubs were the places where jazz musicians came to maturity.
Clubs in New York City were the center of jazz activity. Although New York City was a main location
of jazz, New Orleans has more recognition

Analysis Of Jack London s The Call Of The Wild
Have people ever thought about writing style? Or about different literary movements? There are many
different kinds of writing styles, along with many different literary movements. Authors choose the
writing style they want, and whether or not to be in a movement. Jack London was one of these
authors. He chose to be a part of the naturalism movement. Naturalism is a literary movement with the
belief that humans and animals being shaped by their environment. He then chose to use indirect
discourse in one of his most popular books The Call of the Wild. Free Indirect Discourse is when the
reader knows the thoughts of the main character while having a third person view. Free indirect
discourse can differ from direct discourse because it allows third and first person rather than just third
person. The use of indirect discourse in Jack London s work emphasizes the naturalist movement on
humans industrialization. The environment that Jack London grew up in helped to shape his
naturalistic writing style. Jack London grew up in San Francisco with his mother and step father. He
was raised by an ex slave because his mother was sick. When he was a teenager he worked many jobs
including sailing on a sealing ship, pirating for oysters, and many more. When he returned home at
nineteen he returned to high school. This is where London discovered socialism or Social Darwinism,
and was known as the Boy Socialist of Oakland around his neighborhood. He ran for mayor several
times as the

The Social Responsibility Of The Workplace
Introduction
Archie Carroll defines corporate social responsibility (CSR) as the social responsibility of business
encompassing the economic, legal, ethical, and discretionary expectations that society has of these
organizations at a given point in time. (Crane, 5) Interesting enough, there has been an abrupt growth
of firm s engagement in CSR within all industries. This is the result of growing requests from the civil
society demanding firms, of all sizes, to legitimize their practices. (Crane, 4)
More importantly, workplace issues have become an integral part of corporate social responsibility.
This includes a firm s lacking efforts in its occupational health and safety, and its fair pay and
conditions, amongst others. (Crane, 253) As employees reside in the midst of companies engaging in
corporate social responsibility, the reputation of the firm relies profoundly on ensuring all those within
the in house workplaces as well as the outsourced workplaces are treated justly and within the
operating country s legislation. (Crane, 253) Further to this, social injustice that occurs can negatively
affect the firm s reputation and brand favorability. (Crane, 254) Therefore, it was within the firm s best
interests to fulfill their core corporate responsibilities in the workplace. Albeit corporations may have
the intention to act within labour standards, circumstances do arise where the rights of employees are
neglected and the morality of the firm is questioned.

It has forced many students to take out expensive student loans to complete their educational goals, often times leaving graduating college students steep in debt as they enter the workforce. Some of the contributing factors that I am going to address are inflation, the rising cost of living and the varying costs of different educational institutions Webster s dictionary defines inflation: as a continuing rise in the general price level usually attributed to an increase in the volume of money and credit relative to available goods and services. During the last 10 years we have seen and felt the effects of inflation. Services and goods have gone up in price, but the minimum wage for most Californians stayed the same for a number of years. Finally the varying universities and the quality of the programs often dictate the costs. This was clear in the comparison between Fresno State and California Polytechnic State. Each author in his or her own way masterfully employs images in order to better support their overall claims. Within her text, Workers Go Shopping, Milanesio expertly employs multiple photos of Argentinians moving about their daily lives to illustrate how the importation of western culture so greatly affected the emerging middle, and working class consumers. This gives great backing to her thesis of how the emerging working class so greatly affected the transformation of Argentina into a modern 20th century nation. Photos of the Argentinian people enjoying modern luxuries like dance halls and vacations to the beach, are accompanied by advertisements from magazines and street billboards which further illuminate the consumer culture which had engulfed the nation by mid century. Milanesio also employs images to illustrate how the importation of western culture also propagated gender roles for not only women, but men as well. Documents taken directly from Argentinian media of the day can be seen encouraging women to aspire for beauty, but also submissiveness. The propagation of the housewife myth, visible here in the Argentinian media, was a very prevalent force in the society of the United States at this time and can be assumed to have been heavily influenced by their neighbors to the north. Ads directed to women for sewing machines and kitchen appliances were mirrored by ones pointed to men which embedded ideals of masculinity and hard work. These advertisements not only encouraged an overall image of what Argentinian people should aspire to, but also expanded the consumer market, thereby promoting consumerism. Analysis Of The Shawshank Redemption By Frank Darabont Alec Heitz Katherine Wagner HUM 224 02 Evaluative Essay October 13th, 2015 Evaluative Analysis: The Shawshank Redemption When it comes to movies, I am not exactly what you could consider well versed. Had it not been for several close friends of mine, I would have never even seen blockbuster hits such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, or Back to the Future. The reason for this is not because I dislike watching movies, but rather due to the restrictive nature of my parents. Thus, I have not had the privilege to enjoy The Shawshank Redemption, Frank Darabont s 1994 adaptation of the Stephen King novel, until recently. Due to countless positive reviews and the recommendations of friends, I anticipated that it would be a must see for those mature enough to appreciate its commentary on the human condition. After viewing the flick, I can certainly verify The Shawshank Redemption deserves its must see status, as it contains such relatable themes and excellent cinematic techniques. Various themes are presented in the film; however, the most prevalent of these themes are the severity of isolation and the redeeming qualities of hope. The Shawshank Redemption follows the story of Andy Dufresne, a man wrongly convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover, and his time spent at the Shawshank prison, as well as Andy s eventual escape. Neil Postman Throughout the span of the past few weeks I have traversed the globe, visiting several countries and regions, only to realize that although new methods develop, language as a way of expressing ones self has remained the most effective. Despite this fact, language still has its pitfalls. Neil Postman, in his essay #8220;Defending Against the Indefensible, #8221; outlines seven concepts that can be used to aid a student in better understanding the language as a means of communication. Postman argues that if a student were to see hidden meaning in a word, then they could use it to their defense. It is my belief that Postman may be correct now, what about in the future. If attention were turned to smaller words, then surely our vocabulary will diminish, and the same thing that happened to words such as true, and false, will happen to words such as semantic, and pedagogical. Vocabulary tests should be left as they are. If a student wishes to study words of everyday use, read a book, or watch television. The next principle was thought provoking as well. The use of a metaphor as a tool in education is rarely used, as Postman notes. #8220;Unless our students are aware of how metaphors shape arguments, organize perceptions, and control feelings, their understanding is severely limited. Postman displays how most political speeches are laced with metaphors, and how teacher #8217;s methods are shaped by a metaphor. A student who doesn #8217;t understand a metaphor, or when it is being applied tends to have a more closed outlook. A metaphor, used as a communication skill, is best described in a political way. Think of Reagan #8217;s Voodoo economics, or Bill Clinton building a bridge to the 21st century. Politicians can easily scam an ignorant voter, should one not understand a metaphor. It was then published in 1891, in book form, containing six additional chapters with revisions. The first reviews of Dorian Gray were mostly unfavorable. It was condemned for its speculative treatment of immoral or at least uncomfortable subjects. A review in the St. James s Gazette by Samuel Henry Jeyes, journalist and biographer was titled A Study in Puppydom. Jeyes refers to Wilde s idle, effeminate characters in the book and writes: The puppies appear to fill up the intervals of talk by plucking daisies and playing with them, and ... It maybe that he drew on his own experiences to create the atmosphere of scandal in the last chapters, even though, other than murder, the protagonist s sins are never named and only briefly alluded to. Wilde was obviously upset by the public controversy concerning moral issues that occurred after the appearance in Lippincott s. The reason he added the six additional chapters was to take on more of a conventional Victorian nature and to tone down the passages which may have been described as homo erotic in spirit. The prejudice against Wilde is best demonstrated in the reviews of his previous short stories and prose fiction as compared to Dorian Gray. Even though his works are consistent in style and theme, while Dorian Gray was criticized severely, the earlier stories were praised not only for their morality but also for their literary competence. • 22. The Impact Of Religious Culture In Giovanni Boccaccio s... Religious culture in Italy grew and developed in several ways over its span of existence. It was also a time of recording information and countless people wrote during this time about the different aspects of their country. Religion was an important part of the people s daily life, seeing that it determined their afterlife. There are several stories and beliefs available about this time period that are used for current references on how exactly the religious culture worked. In particular, Giovanni Boccaccio s Decameron, which he wrote as a series of short stories about the religious culture during the 1350 s, which was not long after the Black Death. His series of fictional short stories gave people a different side of the story and how people truly regarded religion during this time. Currently, people who read these excerpts can compose inferences on how religious culture was back then and it gives a different thought process, seeing that while it is not particularly true, it shows a different side of the religious culture. Specifically, the story he tells us in this excerpt shows us a great deal about the religious culture of Italy during that time and how seriously they regarded God and his forgiveness, so much that one man lived a horrid life and still managed to gain forgiveness of the church and be buried there. To attain this accuracy, it is important to base a training program on well researched and empirical data. In developing a possible program for training interviewers, it will be necessary to discuss some of the elements that can be used for a training program. However, a training program is only as successful as the results it produces. Therefore, the last section will explore ways to evaluate the effectiveness of a training program. Training Program Elements and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of these elements play an important role in the overall training process and will serve to assist interviewers in achieving more consistent ratings. Training is important because interviewers gain very little useful information from their day to day interviewing experiences (Cascio Aguinis, 2011). Minimal gains from going through multiple interviews makes sense, since interviewers would have nothing to compare their interviewing experiences to, or have any consistent method to learn more effective ways of conducting interviews and assigning ratings. Furthermore, training is necessary for interviewers to improve their skills, rather than perpetuate poor ones, and is best when experience combines with high levels of cognitive complexity (Cascio Aguinis, 2011). Therefore, it is critical for an interviewer training program to have elements like learning and analysis, which adds cognitive complexity by providing a base of information and clear examples for participants to observe. Overall, experience alone will not suffice in allowing improvements to occur for an interviewer, and training is necessary to improve decision making and accuracy during interviews. Key Components As mentioned previously, a key component when conducting a training program is to clearly define the purpose of the training. The role of interviewers is to accurately rate their perceptions of an applicant and evaluate those perceptions in relation to job requirements, as outlined by a job ... The sports I played throughout the years has been baseball, football, soccer, and I ran track. Throughout the years I played these sports has been some challenging times and injuries that have happened to me. Injuries and challenges always have an impact on a athletes abilities and there physical and mental wanting to keep on playing. One challenge I had playing some of these sports is the coaches. Some coaches you have through your high school or athletic career will help you and assist you. One coach I had for track was the total opposite of that, instead of helping us, all she would do is criticize everything that a person would do wrong and ignore the team if they had questions. She wouldn t help us resolve our problem and I found that as a challenge for me because if I needed help on some tips for running, she would not help. How I responded to this situation is by talking to her about the ways she coaches. She didn t respond very well to what I had to say but at least I stood up and said something. She learned that I didn t like how she was coaching and that s how I resolved my situation with her. Many individuals tend to become uninterested, uncommitted, and unmotivated for many reasons. The reasons they have could be resolved very easily. Some of the reasons I have heard throughout the years is that the training is too hard. Training is supposed to be hard, you aren t going to be the best unless you train hard. Another complaint I have heard is that the coaches are mean. Some coaches are mean and some coaches are mean for a reason. Some coaches that is the only way they know. Pushing athletes to the wall has been a coaching thought for many years and most coaches I had, went by that mindset. The last reason I think people become uninterested in sports or physical activity is that there not getting any results. The fact of the matter is; it is not just working out that s going to get you the results. There are many factors that go into progressing and getting that result you want. This is due to their profound effects on the concentration, distribution, and function of peripheral leukocytes and to their suppressive effects on the inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and on other mediators of inflammation. Inflammation, regardless of its cause, is characterized by the extravasation and infiltration of leukocytes into the affected tissue. These events are mediated by a complex series of interactions of white cell adhesion molecules with those on endothelial cells and are inhibited by glucocorticoids. After a single dose of a glucocorticoid, the concentration of neutrophils in the circulation increases while the lymphocytes (T and B cells), monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils decrease. The changes are maximal at 6 hours and are dissipated in 24 hours. The increase in neutrophils is due both to the increased influx into the blood from the bone marrow and to the decreased ... Its precise mechanism of action is unknown but it has been proposed that the antiemetic properties arise due to activation of glucocorticoid receptors in the medulla, or by inhibiting central production of prostaglandins or inhibiting the release of endogenous opioids. It is also known to improve appetite, and in combination with reduced nausea and vomiting, aids early recovery. Glucocorticoids can also reduce pain by suppression of bradykinin and neuropeptides from nerve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
